Slideshow transcript

Slide 1: Guy Kawasaki’s Art of Innovative Solutions Presentation (minus Guy Kawasaki, divided by 5 Gin & Tonics, plus 1 Day of Reflection, minus some aggressive editing, times a quite nicely laid out design if I do say so myself ;) = Innovation Equations = a snappy little slideshow by budesigns

Slide 2: On presenting Great + Short > Suck + Long (Guy did run a bit long, but I don't think anyone cared, and he certainly didn't suck.)

Slide 3: How to own market share Smaller niche = Greater chance of dominance (Guy is the best 53 year old Hawaiian hockey player in Northern California)

Slide 4: Have a purpose Make Meaning > Make Money Find your core value proposition. Mantra > Mission Statement Mantras: Target = Democratize Design Guy = Empower Entrepreneurs

Slide 5: On mission statements Offsite at expensive resort + facilitator (lamaze Instructor named Moonbeam) + empty buzzwords (paradigms, partnerships, leadership, innovation) = Mission Statement

Slide 6: Don't be afraid to polarize Some people hate your product > nobody cares

Slide 7: Jump the curve Bigger + better < game changing Don’t just improve on something that already exists. Do something entirely different.

Slide 8: Observed trends Rich + famous ≠ smart Rich + famous = lucky

Slide 9: How to pitch 10 slides + 20 minutes + 30 pt minimum font size (or the age of your oldest audience member ÷ 2)

Slide 10: On the existence of a higher power Continued success of Apple = proof of God (proof of the devil is found in other operating systems)

Slide 11: Timing Bad time to launch a company you believe in = [null] Good time to launch a company you don't believe in = [null]

Slide 12: On hindsight A couple billion here, a couple billion there... adds up. (if you are ever offered the chance to interview for the CEO position at Yahoo in the 1990s… take it!)

Slide 13: Thanks → Guy Kawasaki + Network Solutions + Sonoma + Twitter + Charlotte Business Journal + Everybody
