  • 1. For TNT Express, reliable telecommunications is crucial to customer service. So, when Jan Denys saw the opportunity to use an existing BT optical fibre network to also carry public telephony services, he had to be sure financial reward would outweigh operational risk. By the time he gave the go-ahead for the rollout, no doubt remained in his mind. A three-month trial of BT One – Business Voice had confirmed the concept’s reliability, while 30 per cent call charge reductions made for a compelling financial case. Now the solution’s been deployed across seven major TNT Express sites in the Netherlands, including its two contact centres. With payback on the project achieved in less than 12 months, it looks like Jan was betting on a certainty all along. In convergence projects, prudent risk management assures safe financial rewards Significant savings could be made by taking advantage of the existing infrastructure to combine data and public telephony traffic on the same network.” Jan Denys ICS Infrastructure Manager TNT Express Benelux TNT Express Benelux Case study
  • 2. Challenge Headquartered in Hoofdorp in Holland, TNT Express is the largest business of its kind in Europe, generating revenues of over $7 billion. It delivers parcels, documents, and freight, operating in more than 200 countries through over 83,000 employees. BT is a trusted communications supplier to the TNT Express Benelux operating unit, and a BT IP Connect wide area network links the company’s sites throughout the world. In the Netherlands, however, TNT Express had historically relied on a separate public telephony supplier. Jan Denys, ICS Infrastructure Manager at TNT Express Benelux, spotted an opportunity. “A BT fibre infrastructure already served many of our major buildings throughout Holland,” he says, “which offered the possibility of combining data and public telephony over the same network.” That BT fibre infrastructure had reliably delivered the BT IP Connect service for many years. In fact, resilience had been planned in from day one. Each building was served by dual, diversely routed fibres entering through separate ducts remote from each other, providing assurance against cable failure. “The marginal implementation cost of the BT Business Voice service was recovered in the first year, so the programme started to show a strong return on investment in less than 12 months.” Jan Denys ICS Infrastructure Manager TNT Express Benelux Case study TNT Express Benelux Offices worldwide The services described in this publication are subject to availability and may be modified from time to time. Of the twenty-five TNT Express sites in Holland, seven key buildings already had fibre delivery and could immediately benefit from the converged Business Voice solution. Crucially, these included the two TNT Express contact centres. Jan Denys explains: “Voice is very important to TNT. Many customers call us to place an order via the customer contact centre.” A three-month trial was conducted to ensure that end users would be happy with the migrated service, before starting a full rollout. There were some minor initial technical teething problems which were quickly overcome. Just one of the advantages of Business Voice was that the move was completely transparent to end users: all work took place on the BT side of the network. Value The TNT Express buying decision was primarily cost-based. Jan Denys explains: “The investment in the BT fibre infrastructure had already been depreciated so, once lower call charges of around 30 per cent per annum were factored in, the financial benefits were very clear. The marginal implementation cost of the BT Business Voice service was recovered in the first year, so the programme started to show a strong return on investment in less than 12 months.” All seven key sites have now been migrated onto the BT One – Business Voice service. They are administered under a single contract, simplifying management for TNT Express. Cost saving has not been the only advantage for TNT Express. Single sourcing its communications from BT means that the existing service desk supports the new Business Voice service. With only one number to call, TNT Express gets a more efficient and cohesive customer experience from a BT team that understands its business. “This results in better planning and more informed decision-making,” concludes Jan Denys, “while consistent processes for day- to-day service transactions such as ordering and fault management make our jobs easier.” Core BT services ¾¾ IP Connect global ¾¾ BT One – Business Voice Converging data and public telephony onto a single resilient optical fibre network shows strong return on investment
