    • Civil engineering projects demand total flexibility. No two engagements are ever the same, with operations often set up at short notice in remote corners of the globe. In such a challenging field, Rob Gijsberts needs an IT infrastructure that can cope with the extraordinary demands the company’s people place on it. With BT managed network services for converged data and voice, support for Rob and his colleagues is only ever a phone call away. That leaves them able to focus on the job in hand, no matter how big or how far away it is. Global engineer prospers with industry-strength network services In our field it’s very difficult to plan long term because you can’t always tell what new projects you’ll be working on in the future. BT is a very flexible company. It’s able to react fast, to provide us with communications services whenever and wherever we need them.” Rob Gijsberts IT Director ARCADIS ARCADIS Case study
    • Challenge Providing consultancy, design, engineering, and management services in areas like infrastructure and the environment, ARCADIS employs more than 15,000 people worldwide. With strong market positions across Europe, the Americas, China, and Japan, it is one of the top 10 global companies in its field. The execution of large infrastructure projects takes careful co-ordination, invariably involving specialists and teams around the world. “Sustainability is high on our agenda,” says Rob Gijsberts, IT Director at ARCADIS. “It’s one of our crucial design principles. We also try to work in sustainable ways, for example avoiding business travel whenever possible.” Technology is vital to achieving those aims. “Our engineers need to collaborate no matter where they are,” Rob continues. “For example, complex structural calculations are constantly exchanged between engineers here in Holland and elsewhere around the globe. A resilient and reliable wide area network is absolutely essential.” “Having outsourced many of our ICT services to BT, if ever there’s a problem or we need anything I just have one call to make. It’s simple. BT is doing a great job by taking away all the technological worries so that I can get on with more important aspects of my job.” Rob Gijsberts, IT Director, ARCADIS Case study ARCADIS Offices worldwide The services described in this publication are subject to availability and may be modified from time to time. Services and equipment are provided subject to the respective British Telecommunications plc standard conditions of contract. Today, a BT IP Connect wide area network links its 15 main sites in the Netherlands. BT also provides internet access and voice services. The most recent service implementation sees BT One Enterprise teamed with BT One Business Voice to replace a traditional PBX network. BT was selected following a competitive tender. “All the other suppliers wanted to talk about was technology,” Rob Gijsberts recalls. “On the other hand with BT we discussed functionality and service levels.” Now, the resilient BT One Enterprise IP telephony platform provides high quality and cost effective voice connectivity to ARCADIS across the Netherlands. Although the central Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers are hosted in the company’s own data centres, the hardware is owned and fully managed by BT. A flexible BT finance package provides a pay-as-you-go per-seat pricing model. The implementation of the managed IP telephony and Business Voice service – and the decommissioning of the legacy PBX network – was achieved on schedule and without service interruption. With proactive BT support services the infrastructure is constantly monitored and problems are solved as soon as they occur; most often before ARCADIS end users are impacted. Value The BT IP Connect service has proved to be very reliable. It provides the high bandwidth necessary for ARCADIS to run a wide range of business applications from specialist engineering software, such as CAD/CAM to traditional business systems such as payroll, invoicing, and HR. Providing six Classes of Service, the IP Connect WAN assures time sensitive traffic such as mission critical business applications and voice gets priority. Rob Gijsberts confirms: “Our internal voice traffic is now routed over the WAN rather than the public network, so we’re avoiding call charges for inter-site calls. That’s saving us a considerable sum.” Fast application responses times are also assured. There are additional savings from eliminating maintenance charges for the old PBXs. Administration costs are reduced, too, with moves and changes often possible without engineering intervention. Rob Gijsberts sums up: “Having outsourced many of our ICT services to BT, if ever there’s a problem or we need anything I just have one call to make. It’s simple. BT is doing a great job by taking away all the technological worries so that I can get on with more important aspects of my job.” Core BT services ¾¾ BT IP Connect global ¾¾ BT One Enterprise IP telephony solution based on fully managed Cisco Unified Communications Manager servers ¾¾ BT One Business Voice ¾¾ BTInternetConnecthighspeed webaccess BT provides ARCADIS with IP Connect WAN and managed IP telephony services across the Netherlands
