  • 2. What is the subjunctive?
    The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense.
    At its’ most basic level we use the subjunctive to refer to unreality, subjective views or feelings and commands/influence
    It is generally used in a subordinate clause
  • 3. How is the subjunctive formed?
    Ar verbs

    Er and ir verbs
    Beba
    Bebas

  • When is it used?
    To make a subjective judgement
    Me parece triste que Hugo no esté aquí
    To express a command or wish
    Quiero que Hamish se vaya
    Espero que Tom vaya a venir a la fiesta
    To express necessity
    Es preciso que Hamish tenga el pelo pelirrojo

    After verbs expressing an influence e.g. Es importante que, decir, obligar.
    Obligo a mis niños a que queden en su jaula
    After conjunctions expressing purpose
    Tengo que matar a Hugo para que no diga la verdad
