    • JEFF DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL MEDIA CENTER FACILITY RENOVATION PLAN Rachel Davis for FRIT 7132 Dr. Stephanie Jones Georgia Southern University
    • JDHS
      • Jeff Davis High School serves all of Jeff Davis County.
      • The Media Center flooded this summer due to a busted water main, so it is newly renovated as far as the paint, carpet, shelving and layout.

    • PHOTO TOUR OF JDHS MEDIA CENTER
      • The Circulation desk is near the main entrance and has visibility of all of the student and faculty areas of the media center.
      • There is a small reading area near the main entrance.

    • BOOK COLLECTION AREAS ACCORDING TO STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF THAT WERE SURVEYED, LIGHTING IS SUFFICIENT IN ALL AREAS. Book shelves were shortened to allow visibility of students from the circulation desk.
    • STUDENT READING THERE ARE PLENTY OF PLACES FOR STUDENTS TO READ OR WORK, STUDENTS AND FACULTY SURVEYED SAY THAT THEY LIKE THE ADDITION OF THE READING NOOK. There are tables, chairs and benches throughout the media center.
    • CONFERENCE FACILITY
      • A small conference room which also houses professional resources, audio visual material and the laminating machine is available for small group testing and unit planning days. Faculty surveyed said that while this room is often available it is really too small for its intended purpose.
    • DISPLAYS New books are displayed on top of the book cases. Students say they are immediately drawn to these books because they are so visible in this location. Current issues of sub- scribed magazines are located on a display rack in the reading nook.
    • MEDIA CENTER ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
      • The two exterior walls are
      • windows. This allows a lot of natural light into the media center and any glare can be controlled by vertical blinds.
    • VISIBILITY Computers are arranged so that the teacher or media personnel is able to view all student screens from almost any location in the media center. Teachers have really been pleased with this new setup. They say it cuts down on how often students are off task when working on the computers because monitoring is easier.
    • DEMOGRAPHICS
    • SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS
      • JDHS currently serves 760 students in grades 9-12
      • The media center was re-opened after water damage required total renovation, September 25
      • The Media Center staffs one Full-time Media specialist and one Full-time Media Para-professional
      • The Media Center also enjoys the added assistance of interns from the JDHS Work-Based Learning Program
    • ACCESSIBILITY
      • The location of the media center is the rear left corner of the school. According to students surveyed, this makes for a long trek for students coming from the far right side of the school.
    • COLLECTION
      • Books –
      • There are15,929 usable volumes in the media center. State Standards are met since a minimum of 2000 or 10 volumes per student is required and there are 760 students.
      • Magazines –
      • The Media Center subscribes to 13 magazines/periodicals in print and have access to over 200 with the subscription to online databases.

    • PHYSICAL PROBLEMS
      • Until recently a portable screen and projector have had to be set up anytime a computer presentation was given.
      • A screen has been mounted to eliminate the need for screen set-up
      • A mount and wiring have been installed for a projector and the projector is on order
      • Several teachers and administrators have expressed their excitement over this coming addition
      Projection System
    • COMPUTER NEEDS
      • Media staff and teachers have expressed the need for additional computers in the media center. At this time there are 19 student computers and the average class size is 24 students.
    • POLICIES AND GUIDELINES
    • CURRENT MEDIA CENTER POLICIES
      • HOURS OF OPERATION: 7:45-3:30
      • Extended Hours: Mon-Thurs; 3:30-6:30*
      • Materials may be checked our before school, during break and lunch, and at other times when the student is in the media center
      • Materials are not to leave the media center without first being checked out
      • Books may be checked out for two weeks and may be renewed
      • Over-due books accumulate a fine of five (5) cents per day
      • “ Free Fine Days” are held once a semester allowing students to return late book without incurring a fine
      • Lost and/or damaged materials must be paid for (replacement cost)
      • Students who abuse materials will lose their library privileges
      • Removing or damaging barcodes will result in a $1.00 fine

    • JEFF DAVIS COUNTY INTERNET USAGE POLICY The use of Internet resources is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in the cancellation of those privileges and/or disciplinary action by school officials. All activities by all persons while using the Internet in Jeff Davis County Schools must be in support of education and research, and be consistent with the educational objectives of Jeff Davis County Schools. All persons accessing the Internet from a school site are responsible for all on-line activities which take place through that access.     • STUDENT VIEWPOINT ON POLICIES
    • POLICY ISSUES
      • There are two viewpoints about fines. Some students dislike the late fees and refuse to pay for lost books, while others say it is a necessary evil.
      • A remedy for the lost book cost is to give students the options of paying the replacement cost of the book or working off the debt by assigning the student some task to be completed after school hours.
        • ** A student’s ability to pay is taken into account**
    • POLICY ISSUES
      • Many students dislike the internet restrictions and the fact that students are monitored so closely. They are not able to use the computers much for pleasure even when it is legal and they are not viewing improper sites.
      • A remedy for the internet restrictions is to allow students to use the computers for pleasure provided they are in the media center during downtime or extended hours and not for a class assignment with the understanding that they will be monitored.

      • Install a ceiling mounted projector directed at a retractable screen that is also mounted

      • New computers should be purchased in order to meet the increase in average class size
