The Co-Teaching Edge This edge focuses on teachers and their place within the education system in the 21st century in these areas: ProfessionalDevelopment Partnering with the community, other educators and parents.
Professional Development School system budgets are being cut from all areas including teaching education, this in conjunction with time constraints, are leaving teachers with a lack in development. Thus teachers must seek out learning opportunities on their own, which typically take place within the summer. Teacher education is also falling short. Major focus on philosophy as opposed to actual teaching methods. Chen states, “You can’t have a world-class education system without a world-class teacher education system” (2010, p. 192).
Community ConnectionExamples Chen describes the use of community partnerships to teach concepts to students: Partnership between local schools in Arizona and Opera singers in the program, Opening Minds through Arts. Flocabulary in New York uses Hip Hop and rap to motivate and teach students.
Home Connection Parent involvement is an essential part of the success of education reform. Technology can serve to breach the expanse between home and school. School Loop and Teleparent are technology tools that are using the internet, web pages, online calendars and voicemail to involve and inform parents.
