Role of Student Councils in Nurturing Student Behaviour
Student Councils play a vital role in complementing the behavior of students. A Student
Council is actually a collection of students from different classes, levels and departments
to organize the priorities and needs of students. Elected students get together to present
their views on various subjects pertaining to their requirements in academics, sports,
creative pursuits and even behavior in school. This way, an organized and prioritized
committee of students represents the voice of various students from various economical
and academic strata.
Student Council not only addresses the immediate needs of students, it also helps
participating students to offer solutions for long lingering problems of administration and
student conflicts. Even ex students can participate in initial meetings of student councils
in order to inspire and encourage the present set-up. What is interesting about student
councils is that it not only develops the qualities of self-responsibility and confidence in
students, it also teaches them to patiently co-operate with other members, thus teaching
the method of tolerance and learning. Now, why would this be important to students and
student councils? Well, looking at the current situations in schools and colleges when
student tempers run amok, being part of a council that endeavors to help other students is
a great learning experience for students. The student council gets to plan for various
activities and in the process polishes organizational, language or other academic skills of
the students.
A Student Council is the primary learning ground before the initial steps in society.
Interaction forms an essential part of every student council meeting and this greatly
boosts the morale and learning process of every student who is part of the student
council. Being leaders and being part of a group is also learnt here. This is helpful later
on when life opens up various opportunities after schooling is over. The students learn to
co-operate in various positions thus, teaching the qualities of patience, perseverance and
discipline, elements that are needed to be successful in life.
More often than not, student behavior has a lot to be said in terms of credibility and
responsibility. Student councils are instruments of positive transformation for students.
They help in developing the character of students which is of utmost importance for any
student. More than academic excellence it is constructive behavior that goes a great way
in molding the nature of a student. Social interaction, academic improvement, creative
expression and self responsibility help in influencing the behavior of a student. Student
councils do exactly that!
