      • Independent, highly useful systems
      • Sadly, the systems did not interact with each other
    3. Some Examples
      • Online email – Hotmail, yahoo mail, etc
      • Myspace – really started as an island
      • Flickr – to store pictures
      • Blogspot / Wordpress to store a blog
      • Tons and Tons of separate websites / other peoples blogs
    4. Let's pick on Instant Messengers....
      • AIM
      • MSN
      • ICQ
      • GoogleTalk
      • Ichat
      • Sure there are clients that can talk to all of them, but what a hassle to have your contacts spread out amongst so many different networks.
    5. Problems that arise
      • Easy to misplace information
      • Limited to the features of whatever tool the author picked
      • Must have common set of services
    6. Facilitators of Convergence
      • Really Simple Syndication
      • Open APIs
      • Subscription based calendars
      • Twitter
      • Text messaging

      • Blogs
      • News
      • Just about anything that updates with some frequency

      • Application Programming Interface
      • Services publish publicly how to include their tools within your application
      • Or how to include your application within their service
      • Facebook Apps are a great example

      • Enable services to publish to your calendar.

      • Titans Schedule
      • US Holidays

      • Short (140 character) subscription based messaging system
      • Used for social networking
      • Can also be used to request services
      • Can also provide easy way to update captive crowd
      • Accessed via SMS, the web, or other services
      • It is an incredible message bus
