6. The strangest of all
Australian mammals is the
platypus. The platypus is
a shy animal, usually
feeding under water at
night. It has a mouth
shaped like the the flat bill
of a duck which acts like a
radar. It tells the animal
where worms and insects
can be found. The platypus
swims with its eyes and
ears closed!
7. There are about 800 kinds of birds, among them the
kookaburra, the Australian bird whose call sounds like
loud laughter.

Australia is in the

Because it is south of the equator, the
seasons in Australia are the opposite of
those in Europe: it’s winter in Australia
when it’s summer in Europe.

flightless emu are represented on the country’s coat of arms.

Jack represents the historical link with Britain, the large seven-pointed star represents
the six States and Territories, and the small stars from the Southern Cross – a
prominent feature of the southern hemisphere night sky.

monarchy like Great Britain.
The British monarch, Queen
Elizabeth II, is also queen of
Australia and country’s head
of state. But the queen has
little power in the Australia
government. She serves
mainly as a symbol of a long
historical tie between Great
Britain and Australia.

14. HISTORY
Captain James Cook discovered Australia in 1770. He was sent to
discover the huge land that many people believed was south of the
equator. He landed south of present day Sydney in New South Wales. H
claimed this part of the land for the King of England.

Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, New South
Wales, Victoria + Tasmania, and Papua New Guinea.

The Aborigines are the Australian natives that had been living there for
thousands of years before the first Europeans came to Australia in the
1600s.

18. Daisy Kadibil talks about her escape along the rabbit-
proof fence, 2009
Daisy Kadibil was a small child when she was taken
away from her family as part of the Stolen Generations.
She and her sisters, Molly and Gracie, used the rabbit-
proof fence to find their way back home to Jigalong
from Moore River Native Settlement north of Perth, a
journey of about 1600 kilometres. Molly’s daughter,
Doris Pilkington (Nugi Garimara), wrote Follow the
Rabbit-Proof Fence (1996) after several years of
interviewing her mother and Aunt Daisy. The book was
later made into Phillip Noyce’s award-winning
film Rabbit-Proof Fence(2002).
