      • Bring all the medical specialties together into one forum

      • Allow Specialty Schools to encompass, engage, encourage high quality training in medical specialties
      • Ensure all trainers and trainees to feel part of a valued training environment
      • Encouraging, providing and demonstrating excellence in training, academic training, research and innovation
      • For Medicine allow sharing of good practice, tackling of common problems, link between core training and specialties
      • Try and move the training agenda away from recruitment and back to delivery of the highest quality training

    • “ Choose MMC. Choose MTAS. Choose a region. Choose a career. Choose a fucking big lottery…. Choose portfolios, on-line application forms and years of uncertainty. Choose FTSTAs no one knows anything about and hospitals you don’t want to work in…. Choose Hospital@Night and no-one knowing the patients anymore. Choose being an SHO lost in the middle of it all. Choose seniors who know nothing about the system and seem powerless to influence it. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable Non-Consultant career grade post… “

  • What are Specialty Schools?
    • Specialty School of Medicine is a Deanery structure for managing Specialty training in medical specialties in London that brings together the Royal College of Physicians, the Deanery and the NHS and other providers of training
    • ie an identifiable structure within London running training in Medicine
  • What are Specialty Schools?
    • Will have a Board drawn from the institutions & groups that contribute to training as well as other stakeholders
    • Will provide a structure for educational governance and set the direction for the development of Postgraduate Medical Education
    • Schools will be “virtual” and each school will include trainees, trainers, Trust based Educational Supervisors, Training Programme Directors, STCs and all those involved in training
    • The Head of School provides leadership for the School. They are managerially accountable to the Deanery but professionally responsible to the Royal College of Physicians.

    • To develop every trainee to their full potential
    • To nurture academic training and training programmes in all areas jointly with the Universities
    • To develop innovative training opportunities in education, teaching, management, MSc, MRes, MBA with partner Universities
    • To ensure training in core medicine and all the medical specialties are seen as the best in the UK
    • To lead developments in medical training nationally
