  4. 4. Sierra Leone <ul><li>Officially the Republic of Sierra Leone </li></ul><ul><li>Tropical Climate </li></ul><ul><li>Population of 6.4 million </li></ul><ul><li>Freetown is the capital and also the largest city and economic center </li></ul><ul><li>English is the official language </li></ul>
  5. 5. Sierra Leone <ul><li>The country is very rich in minerals, so they rely much on mining </li></ul><ul><li>Among top ten diamond producing nations in the world </li></ul><ul><li>Archaeological finds show that Sierra Leone has been inhabited continuously for at least 2,500 years </li></ul>

Women of Sierra Leone <ul><li>Sierra Leone’s constitution provides for equal rights for woman but in practice woman face both legal and societal discrimination </li></ul><ul><li>Woman do not have equal access to education, economic opportunities, health facilities, or social freedoms </li></ul><ul><li>Woman’s rights and status under traditional law very significantly depending on the ethnic group to which they belong </li></ul>
  7. 7. Woman of Sierra Leone <ul><li>Sierra Leone’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission(TRC) was created out of Sierra Leone’s peace process </li></ul><ul><li>Was mandated to establish an impartial record of the abuses that occurred in the war </li></ul>

Woman of Sierra Leone <ul><li>Violence against woman, especially wife beating is common, domestic violence is not recognized as a societal problem, however rape is </li></ul><ul><li>There is a significant amount of prostitution </li></ul><ul><li>Rebel forces used rape as a terror tactic and forced woman and girls to act as sexual slaves </li></ul>

Woman of Sierra Leone <ul><li>Sexual violence was used in a widespread and systematic way as a weapon and woman were raped in extremely brutal ways </li></ul><ul><li>Woman and children of Sierra Leone known to be the principal war victims, often submitted to rape, sexual slaves, forced labour, torture, and mutilation </li></ul>
