  2. 2. Statistics: <ul><li>1 in 3 women in the United States will have an abortion by the age of 45. </li></ul><ul><li>80,000 women die every year due to unsafe abortions. </li></ul><ul><li>An estimated 46 million abortions occur globally each year. </li></ul>

  4. 4. Geraldine Santoro Geraldine Santoro was a victim of an unsafe illegal abortion. This photograph appeared in Ms. Magazine in the early 1970’s.   5. 5. 1 st Trimester Abortion Types <ul><li>88% of abortions take place in the 1 st trimester. </li></ul><ul><li>There are two preferred methods: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Aspiration </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Medication </li></ul></ul>

Aspiration <ul><ul><ul><li>Also called Suction Curettage </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Used the most for first trimester </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The steps are as follows: </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Insertion of speculum </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Cleansing of cervix </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Local anesthetic is injected </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The Cannula is used to suck out the pregnancy tissue </li></ul></ul></ul></ul>

Medication <ul><li>Also known as medical abortion </li></ul><ul><li>It’s a 2 drug regimen </li></ul><ul><li>Must be done within the first 9 weeks of pregnancy. </li></ul><ul><li>The drugs can be taken orally, injections, or in some cases inserting into the vagina. </li></ul><ul><li>The primary drug used was first available in France in 1980. </li></ul><ul><li>The drugs work by either </li></ul><ul><ul><li>A. Blocking progesterone causing the embryo to detach </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>OR </li></ul></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>B. halting the implantation process </li></ul></ul>
  9. 9. Second Trimester <ul><li>12% or abortions take place during the 2 nd trimester. </li></ul><ul><li>Higher cost then 1 st trimester abortions. </li></ul><ul><li>Two preferred methods: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Dilation and Evacuation </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Induction abortion </li></ul></ul>

Dilation and Evacuation <ul><li>Two main methods </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Osmotic Dilators and Misoprostal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Osmotic dilators </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>- Short thin rods of seaweed or synthetic material </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>-they absorb moisture and expand over several hours. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Misoprostal </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>-Prostaglandin that softens the cervix </li></ul></ul>
  11. 11. Induction Abortion <ul><li>Involves medication that causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy. </li></ul><ul><li>Involves an overnight stay at the facility. </li></ul><ul><li>Medications used can be given orally, suppositories, injections, and via IV’s. </li></ul>

Know the After effects! <ul><li>Signs to watch out for after an abortion: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Heavy Bleeding </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Occurs in fewer then 1 in 100 cases </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>More then two maxi pads an hour, large clots or feeling light headed </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pain </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Usually means infection or in some cases an incomplete abortion </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Fever </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Body temperature above 100.4 </li></ul></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Continued symptoms of pregnancy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Persisting pregnancy symptoms after a week or two of abortion. </li></ul></ul></ul></ul>

Reproduction health </li></ul><ul><li>-opened the door to new state restrictions on abortion </li></ul><ul><li>Hodgson v. Minnesota </li></ul><ul><li>- the court upheld one of the strictest parental notification laws </li></ul><ul><li>Planned p arenthood v. Casey </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>-The court abandoned the trimester time frame </li></ul></ul></ul>

Population Control <ul><li>Reproductive freedom </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>The right to have children or the right not to. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Population Control </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Blames overpopulation for social problems. </li></ul></ul></ul>Policies focused on population control limited the reproduction of women not empowered them.
  15. 15. Discussion Questions <ul><li>Are you pro-choice or pro-life? Why? </li></ul><ul><li>Is it the lack of abortion knowledge that shuns it in some societies? </li></ul><ul><li>Should religion or law factor that greatly in abortion when illegal abortion kills so many? </li></ul>
