        • reduces body fat and burn calories
        • makes strong muscles of lower portion of body and joints
        • enhances blood circulation
Feel the difference – use stairs at least once a day It is estimated that Southern India Grid releases 750 tonnes of green house gases to produce one million units of electricity Make a difference – help lifts reduce energy consumption
      • Climbing Stairs Instead of Elevator Can Be a Life Saver….
A latest study conducted by Swiss researchers has found that people who use stairs regularly have better fitness, less body fat, slim waistlines and lower blood pressure. The study was presented at the European Society of Cardiology in Munich, Germany. Before the study, the team took the measurements of participants' lung capacity, waist circumference, body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol level. The subjects were asked by the researchers to take the stairs exclusively instead of the lift at work for a period of three months. On average, the number of floors they went up and down each day rose from five per day to 23. At the end of the 12 weeks, the measurements were taken for their lung capacity, waist circumference, body fat, blood pressure and cholesterol level. The scientists found that the participants had better lung capacity, trimmer waist; drop in body fat and lower blood pressure and cholesterol level. The authors say that when taken together, this equates to a 15 per cent reduction in the chances of dying prematurely from any cause. Dr Meyer, said, "This suggests that stair climbing can have major public health implications." 1. What is an individual’s carbon footprint due to elevator usage? Does reducing your use of elevator trips make sense? If you were to walk up and down 3 flights of stairs instead of an elevator, it would save 15 Wh a day or 450 Wh a month. Enough to power a 37" Plasma TV for 3 hours. How much electricity does an elevator consume? Per round trip (8 floors): 40 Wh. Enough to run a desktop computer & monitor for 12-15 minutes. Per floor (one direction, 3 meters): 2.5 Wh. This is approx 1/2 the amount of energy it takes to recharge a cellphone battery. While an elevator trip may not account for much energy use, it adds up over the years. Ballpark figures : an individual generates about 6.5 kg of carbon emissions per year by taking the elevator. That works out to half a metric TON of carbon emissions over a lifetime. ENVIRONMENT IMPACT And longevity? And weight? Even two flights of stairs climbed per day can lead to 2.7 kg weight loss over one year (Brownell, Stunkard, and Albaum, 1980). Ref : http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/sth-evs/english/benefits-eng.php And cholesterol? Stair climbing can improve the amount of 'good cholesterol' in the blood - HDL concentrations (Wallace and Neill, 2000) Ref : http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/sth-evs/english/benefits-eng.php A significantly lower risk of mortality is indicated in studies where participants climbed more than 55 flights per week. (Paffenbarger et al. 1993) Ref : http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/sth-evs/english/benefits-eng.php A study identified two forms of physical activity, namely stair-climbing and brisk walking which are associated with increased bone mineral density at the hip and whole body in post meno-pausal women. Ref http ://ije.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/28/2/241 Is there evidence about association between stair climbing and bone density, esp in post-menopausal women? HEALTH BENEFITS
