  • 1. Who Will Stay With Me?Adapted From The Four Wives Story
  • 2. There wasa Chineseemperor, who had 4 wives.
  • 3. He loved the 4th wife themost and adorned her withrich robes and treated her to delicacies. Her name was Yang Gui Fei.
  • 4. The emperor tookgreat care of her andgave her nothing but the best.
  • 5. He also loved the 3rd wife verymuch. Her name was Wang ZhaoJun. Hes very proud of her and always wanted to show off her to his friends.
  • 6. However, the emperor isalways in great fear thatshe might run away with some other men.
  • 7. He too, loved his 2nd wife. Her name was Diao Chan. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the emperors confidante.
  • 8. Whenever the emperor faced some problems,he always turned to his2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.
  • 9. Now, the emperors 1st wife was a very loyal partner andhas made great contributionsin maintaining his power and wealth as well as taking care of the household. Her name was Xi Shi.
  • 10. However, the emperor did notlove the first wife and althoughshe loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.
  • 11. One day, the emperor fellill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, "Now I have 4wives with me. But when I die, Ill be alone. How lonely Ill be!"
  • 12. Thus, he asked the 4th wife, "I loved you most, endowed you with thefinest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that Im dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"
  • 13. "No way!" replied the4th wife, Yang Gui Feiand she walked awaywithout another word.
  • 14. The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the emperors heart. The sad emperor then asked the 3rd wife, "I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that Im dying, will you follow me and keep me company?"
  • 15. "No!" replied the 3rd wife, Wang Zhao Jun, "Life is so good over here! Im going toremarry when you die!" The emperors heart sank and turned cold.
  • 16. He then asked the 2nd wife, "I always turned to you for help andyouve always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?"
  • 17. "Im sorry, I cant help youout this time!" replied the 2nd wife, Diao Chan, "At the very most, I can only send you to your grave." The answer came like a bolt of thunder and theemperor was devastated.
  • 18. Then a voice calledout, "Ill leave with you. Ill follow you no matter where you go." said Xi Shi
  • 19. The emperor looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the emperor said, "I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!!!"
  • 20. Actually, we all have 4 wives in ourlives. The 4th wife is our body. Nomatter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, itll leave us when we die.
  • 21. Our 3rd wife ? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.
  • 22. The 2nd wife is our family andfriends. No matter how close theyhad been there for us when were alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.
  • 23. The 1st wife is in fact our soul, oftenneglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.
  • 24. Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever wego. Perhaps its a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until were on our deathbed to lament. Thank You Very Much Sompong Yusoontorn
