17 Life Lessons From Buddha

 1. 1. 17
Life
Lessons
From
Buddha
2. 2. Buddha was a wise dude. Even you are by no means a Buddhist, you will enjoy many of the teachings and philosophies of Buddhism. There’s no need to stick to one teaching, one person, and one book. We can pick what feels right to us. The following life lessons are quotes from Buddha. Please remember to stop and think about what you’re feeling as you read them. Be aware of any tension, feelings, and thoughts that arise and just let them be.
3. 3. Life Lesson 1 : “A jug fills drop by drop.”
You can bring attention to a desired goal, but don’t expect to achieve it overnight. Each moment of conscious intention is a raindrop that will in time turn into a stream, and then a river flowing to its destination.
4. 4. Life Lesson 2 : “Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.”
The majority of the time you spend dwelling on the past or worrying about the future is time wasted. When you feel your mind drifting away from the present moment, bring it back, and be completely in the now.
5. 5. Life Lesson 3 : “Hatred does not cease by hatred, but only by love; this is the eternal rule.”
You cannot fight for peace. Wars cannot be stopped by having more wars. Patience, forgiveness, and love are what we have to use if we want to make this planet a better place.
6. 6. Life Lesson 4 : “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
How often have you held onto anger and replayed it over and over in your mind? When someone has done something to you, or something has happened, it may feel good to be angry, but anger never solves anything. It will only keep you stuck and miserable.
7. 7. Life Lesson 5 : “In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.”
Whenever your beliefs are challenged, you will feel resistance. Life is not about who’s right and who’s wrong, it’s about personal growth. Stay open to new ideas and implement them if they are useful to you.
8. 8. Life Lesson 6 : “In the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.”
Borders, countries, and race do not exist anywhere but in our minds. We ourselves make these decisions. Isn’t it time that we start rethinking and start looking at ourselves as one human race? Think about the distinctions you make every day and how they affect your life. Are all of them what you want them to be?
9. 9. Life Lesson 7 : “No one saves us but ourselves. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.”
You alone are responsible for your life. If your life isn’t where you want it to be, it certainly doesn’t feel like that, but remember, you have the power to change, if you choose to do so. Making excuses, blaming, and wallowing will get you nowhere. You alone must take responsibility and walk your path.
10. 10. Life Lesson 8 : “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.”
Happiness, peace, and joy all come from within. Sure, external circumstances may make you happy in the short-term, but they cannot bring you long-term joy.
11. 11. Life Lesson 9 : “The mind is everything. What you think you become.”
What do you focus on? Where are your thoughts right now? Where your focus goes, energy flows, so be very aware of what is going on in your inner space. The mind needs stimulation. It wants to fix things, so much so that it can create problems in order to have something to solve.
12. 12. Life Lesson 10 : “He is able who thinks he is able.”
If you think you can, you can, but if you think you can’t, you can’t. There will always be obstacles in your way, and if you are constantly thinking negatively, you will run out of steam.
13. 13. Life Lesson 11 : “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
Instead of comparing how much or how little care and attention a person “deserves” each one of us should strive to give love without reserve – the more we give, the more we have.
14. 14. Life Lesson 12 : “Your work is to discover your world and then with all your heart give yourself to it.”
It is common to take into account just one-side of an experience and to stop looking for a richer understanding of our life and the world around us. It is also not difficult to become lost in the magnitude of negative things occurring in our world, but it is important to find our own light and to give ourselves to illuminating the darkness.
15. 15. Life Lesson 13 : “The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart.”
Your heaven, dreams, and purpose all exist within, not in the clutches of a divine external force.
16. 16. Life Lesson 14 : “To live a pure unselfish life, one must count nothing as one’s own in the midst of abundance.”
To declare ownership or rights to something is to state that the universe somehow lacks that thing, but to let go of the idea of securing ownership is to accept the infinite abundance that is available to all and can never cease.
17. 17. Life Lesson 15 : “To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.”
Taking action and making a mistake is better than not taking action at all.
18. 18. Life Lesson 16 : “There are only two mistakes one can make along the road to truth; not going all the way, and not starting.”
Even the smallest action creates a ripple of potential.
19. 19. Life Lesson 17 : “The foot feels the foot when it feels the ground.”
Sometimes we are not aware of things going wrong or our unaware state of being until we experience a glimpse of true insight and revelation. If we do not feel our full power and potential then it might be because the right stimulant to push us into action has not come around… it might be waiting for the first step off the ground before revealing the path ahead.
