Luke: I can’t believe it.Yoda: That is why you fail.
Back when I was younger and first watched the Star Wars movies, one of the best parts wasdefinitely Yoda. He was an early introduction to personal development and spirituality longbefore I had much interest in this stuff. So today I’d like to share 10 of my favorite words ofwisdom from that green little awesome guy.
“Do or do # 1 : Don’t is no DoLessons not… there try. try.”When you tell yourself and/or someone else that you will try you are in my experience morelikely to give up or just stop when the first obstacle shows up. By making clear choices to door not do something – and putting power behind those choices – you are more likely toactually get things done and succeed.
Lessons # 2 : Overcome your fearsOvercoming your fears is one of the most important things to improve yourself and grow. Ifyou don’t you will just get stuck. But how do you do it? Well, first, as Yoda says, you have tostop avoiding your fear.
Fear is the path to the dark side.Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Lessons # 3 : Your world is a reflection of youYou find in your world what you bring into your world. And in your world you can seeyourself – your thoughts and behavior – reflected. By observing the world around youcan gain insights into yourself and what you may need to improve.
“Do or do # 4 : You are not try.”Lessons not… there is no the hero, but your mentees may beYes, Yoda is cool. However, he’s not the popular hero of the series. Instead, he is the drivingforce behind the heroes, Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Similarly, great leaders focuson the future. They build their experience, knowledge and wisdom into others. It bringscomfort to the best leaders to see their padawan (mentees) succeed.
Size matters not.Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?
Lessons # 5 : You may be misunderstoodTo further the misunderstanding, Yoda’s way of talking is different than most. Great leadersare often misunderstood by others. The servant leader’s emphasis on service over powerand humility over vanity goes against the popular notion. You may not be tiny, green,ancient and speak funny, but you will be misunderstood.
Yoda: Help you I can. Yes, mmmm.Luke: I don’t think so. I’m looking for a great warrior.Yoda: Ohhh. Great warrior… Wars not make one great.
“Do or do # 6 : If you’re not careful, your organization may produceLessons not… there is no try.”a Darth VaderYoda expresses concern about young Anakin Skywalker. Sure enough, the worst fears come trueand Anakin becomes the evil Darth Vader. Great leaders have a great deal of accountabilitywhen mentoring and raising the future generations of their organization. Use care in when hiring,mentoring and promoting.
Yoda: Twisted by the Dark Side, young Skywalker hasbecome. The boy you trained, gone he is… consumed by Darth Vader.
“Do or do # 7 : You live in the muckLessons not… there is no try.”Yoda lived on the Dagobah System when Luke Skywalker finds him. This swamp world is full of mud,muck, grime and filth. The home of Yoda is a tiny mud hut. Like Yoda’s home, great leaders do notlive in an ivory tower. To the contrary, they invest a lot of time in the thick of things. In serving theirstakeholders, great leaders are not afraid to get their hands dirty.
Luke: I want my lamp back. I’m gonna need it to get out of this slimy mud hole.Yoda: Mud hole? Slimy? My home this is!
“Do or do # 8 : Your worktry.”Lessons not… there is no is never doneYoda was more than 900 years old when he met his last student (Luke). In fact, even after hedied, Yoda continued to coach and mentor the younger Skywalker. Great leaders understandthat work is never done. Work-life alignment is important, but the work is unending.
When nine hundred years old you reach, look as good, you will not.
Lessons # 9 : Sometimes, you have to kick evil’s butt yourselfAncient by human terms, but still spirited and full of Force, Yoda knows when he must pick up thelight saber and do battle himself. Great leaders focus on building others to extend the culture ofservice and the positive influence of their organizations. However, when necessary, leaders whoserve are not afraid to join in the hand-to-hand combat of their organization.
Darth Sidious: I have waited a long time for this moment, my littlegreen friend. At last, the Jedi are no more.Yoda: Not if anything to say about it I have!
“Do or do # 10 :thereupno try.”Lessons not… It’s is to youLike Yoda, great leaders understand the future is up to them. If Yoda had not gone intoexile on Dagobah, patiently waiting for the right opportunity, all could have been lost.Yoda was the last hope for the people against the Dark Force. He had to train Luke toconquer the Emperor and Darth Vader.
To all of you who wish to achieve something, it must be driven by good intent, your heart andyour mind aligned. In order to achieve this and the inner balance of your heart, have faith, thatif you try your best, it will work out, because, you will always achieve something better than ifyou did not. Follow the lessons from Master Yoda, and you will become the great leader.
