RELAY IS A COMMUNITY EVENT AND, AS THE SIGNATURE FUNDRAISING EVENT OF THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, IT IS NATURAL THAT PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY KNOW WHAT WE DO WITH THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY DONATED TO THE FIGHT. STUDIES ALSO SHOW THAT WHEN PEOPLE ARE DECIDING WHICH AMONG MANY WORTHY CHARITIES TO DONATE TO THAT ONE OF THE DETERMINING FACTORS IS HOW THEIR DOLLARS ARE SPENT IN AND AFFECT THEIR COMMUNITY.
SO IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND WHERE THE MONEY GOES AND HOW RELAY DOLLARS ARE AN INVESTMENT IN TENNESSEE AND THE Nashville area
SO, WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service IN THE BROADEST SENSE, ALL THE MONEY RAISED BY RELAY FOR LIFE GOES TO SUPPORTING THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY’S MISSION OF ELIMINATING CANCER AS A MAJOR HEALTH CONCERN AND IMPROVING THE LIVES OF THOSE BATTLING CANCER. We help to celebrate more birthdays by helping people stay well, get well, finding cures and fighting back against cancer! A WORTHY CAUSE AND DESTINATION FOR PEOPLE TO MAKE DONATIONS.
TRUE, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, IT DOES NOT REALLY ANSWER THE QUESTION. A MORE INFORMATIVE WAY OF EXPLAINING WHERE THE MONEY GOES IS TO LOOK AT THE 4 MAIN AREAS OF HOW THE ACS GOES ABOUT ACCOMPLISHING ITS MISSION: CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT THOSE 4 AREAS ARE?
STAY WELL - GET WELL- FINDING CURES - AND - FIGHTING BACK LET’S LOOK AT EACH OF THESE 4 AREAS AND SEE HOW RELAY DOLLARS ARE INVESTED IN OUR STATE AND COMMUNITY.
(1) THE ACS IS THE NATION’S LARGEST PRIVATE, NON-PROFIT SOURCE OF CANCER RESEARCH FUNDS. THE ACS HAS AWARDED NEARLY $4.7B TO CANCER RESEARCH SINCE ITS PROGRAM BEGAN IN 1946. IN 2011, ABOUT 1/3 OF THE MONEY TAKEN IN BY RELAYS IN THE MID-SOUTH WAS RE-INVESTED IN GRANTS AWARDED TO RESEARCHERS IN THE MID-SOUTH. OF COURSE, RESEARCH, NO MATTER WHERE IT IS DONE – WHETHER IN TENNESSEE OR NEW YORK – BENEFITS THOSE IN OUR COMMUNITY FIGHTING CANCER. AS YOU CAN SEE, CANCER RESEARCH ALSO HELPS TENNESSEE’S ECONOMY. IT’S ALSO IMPORTANT TO MENTION ACS’S PROVEN LONG HISTORY OF SUCCESS ITS HISTORY HAS BEEN MOST SUCCESSFUL: THE ACS HAS FUNDED 46 RESEARCHES WHO HAVE GONE ON TO BECOME NOBEL LAUREATES. ACS RESEARCHERS HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN ALMOST EVERY CANCER INTERACTIVE ACTIVITY Stand up and remain standing if you know……………. A child cured of Leukemia? A man who has had a PSA? A woman who has had a mammogram a pap smear? A person taking Gleevec (one of the many drugs to treat breast cancer? A person who has tried to quit smoking? Look around the room, we all know someone who has benefited from researched funded by the American Cancer Society. THE CANCER ACTION NETWORK IS THE SISTER ORGANIZATION TO THE ACS WITH THE SAME GOALS AND MISSION; THE CANCER ACTION NETWORK JUST TAKES A DIFFERENT ROUTE TO MEET THE MISSION. THROUGH THE CANCER ACTION NETWORK, CANCER PATIENTS, CAREGIVERS, FAMILIES AND OTHER INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS ARE GIVEN UNITED VOICE IN CONGRESS AND STATE LEGISLATURES THROUGHOUT THE NATION. OF COURSE ADVOCACY ENCOMPASSES MORE THAN LOBBYING, IT INCLUDES EDUCATING THE PUBLIC, LAWMAKERS, CANDIDATES, AND THE MEDIA ABOUT CANCER ISSUES AND CHANGING PUBLIC POLICY WITH REGARD TO CANCER. INCLUDES USE OF THE MEDIA LEGISLATIVE BREAKFASTS AND OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS LIKE THE FIGHT BACK EXPRESS
LET’S LOOK AT HOW CANCER ADVOCACY BENEFITS THE West Tennessee COMMUNITY. ASK IF ATTENDEES ENJOY GOING OUT TO EAT WITHOUT HAVING TO BREATHE SOMEONE ELSE’S CIGARETTE SMOKE? ASK IF ATTENDEES HAVE CHILDREN OR GRANDCHILDREN AND ARE GLAD THAT THE FDA NOW HAS THE AUTHORITY TO PROHIBIT PREDATORY PRACTICES OF TOBACCO COMPANIES TRYING TO GET KIDS TO START SMOKING? ASK IF ATTENDEES HAVE HAD A MAMMOGRAM AND ARE APPRECIATIVE OF THE FACT THAT THEIR INSURANCE COMPANY COVERED THE PROCEDURE? AGAIN, BY THE RAISE OF HANDS IT IS CLEAR THAT ADVOCACY EFFORTS OF THE ACS CAN BENEFITS Middle Tennesseeans. CAN’S ADVOCACY EFFORTS ALSO INCLUDE FIGHTING FOR MONEY TO FUND TENNESSEE’S BCCEDP WHICH HELPS UNINSURED WOMEN, THROUGHOUT THE STATE, RECEIVE LIVE-SAVING MAMMOGRAPHY'S. RECOGNIZING THE IMPORTANCE OF RESEARCH IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER , THE CANCER ACTION NETWORK HAS FOR YEARS LEAD THE FIGHT IN WASHINGTON, D.C. TO OBTAIN FEDERAL FUNDING OF CANCER RESEARCH – WHICH OUR #1 PRIORITY LAST YEAR.
