  1. 1. 1
  2. 2. Christian Zionism is one part of an integrated package.
  3. 3. The package includes - biblical literalism and inerrancy
  4. 4. The package includes - biblical literalism and inerrancy - American (white male) supremacy
  5. 5. The package includes - biblical literalism and inerrancy - American (white male) supremacy - conservatism (i.e. the best days are behind us/dark days ahead)
  6. 6. The package includes - biblical literalism and inerrancy - American (white male) supremacy - conservatism (i.e. the best days are behind us/dark days ahead) - a belief that God possesses violent holiness
  7. 7. The package raises a lot of money through religious broadcasting - It is anxiety-based. It is hostility-based. It is loyalty-based. Anxiety, hostility, and in-group loyalty raise money.
  8. 8. 13
  9. 9. The “eschatology module” cannot be changed without addressing the deeper systemic issues: theological systems personal systems fundraising systems
  10. 10. 15
  11. 11. These deeper systemic issues involve a change of mind and heart, not merely a change in opinion.
  12. 12. 17
  13. 13. We must have the courage to differ graciously. “Wow, I see that differently!”
  14. 14. 19
  15. 15. We must articulate a better vision of Christian faith - especially for younger generations: coherent comprehensive more intelligent more motivating more passionate more inspiring.
  16. 16. 21
  17. 17. We need a better choice than ignorance on fire and intelligence on ice.
  18. 18. Christian “justice, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” is a far better option than Christian Zionism.
  19. 19. Let us proclaim and embody that better news!
  20. 20. Joshua 23 A long time afterward, when the LORD had given rest to Israel from all their surrounding enemies, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, Joshua summoned all Israel, its elders and heads, its judges and officers, and said to them, "I am now old and well advanced in years. And you have seen all that the LORD your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the LORD your God who has fought for you. Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. The LORD your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the LORD your God promised you. Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, that you may not mix with these nations remaining among you or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them, but you shall cling to the LORD your God just as you have done to this day. For the LORD has driven out before you great and strong nations. And as for you, no man has been able to stand before you to this day.
  21. 21. One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the LORD your God who fights for you, just as he promised you. Be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God. For IF you turn back and cling to the remnant of these nations remaining among you and make marriages with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you, but they shall be a snare and a trap for you, a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from OFF this good ground that the LORD your God has given you. "And now I am about to go the way of all the earth, and you know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you. ALL have come to pass for you; NOT ONE of them has failed. But just as ALL the good things that the LORD your God promised concerning you HAVE BEEN fulfilled for you, so the LORD will bring upon you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from OFF this good land that the LORD your God has given you, if you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from OFF the good land that he has given to you."
  22. 22. The Law in Deuteronomy 10 says: 17For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. 18He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. 19And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. Then, in Deuteronomy 28 (frightening to read), the Lord promises the people will be defeated in battle and evicted from their land if they don't obey his commands, including, presumably, Deuteronomy 10:19.
  23. 23. The Law says in Leviticus 19: 33“ ‘When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not  mistreat them. 34The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the Lord your God. And similarly, in Leviticus 26, terrifying consequences follow if the people don't obey the Lord's commands, including, presumably, Leviticus 19:33.
  24. 24. Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.
  25. 25. 1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations.A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? 2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? 3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24.The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
  26. 26. 4.When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9.The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? 5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath.Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it? 6.A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?
  27. 27. 7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle- room here? 8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? 9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
  28. 28. 10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your adoring fan. James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus Dept. of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education University ofVirginia
  29. 29. From a handwritten manual from Mohammad Atta’s bag: "Keep a very open mind, keep a very open heart of what you are to face... You will be entering paradise. You will be entering the happiest life, everlasting life ... "Check all of your items – your bag, your clothes, knives, your will, your IDs, your passport, all your papers. Check your safety before you leave ... Make sure that nobody is following you ... Make sure that you are clean, your clothes are clean, including your shoes." "Purify your heart and clean it from all earthly matters. The time of fun and waste has gone. The time of judgement has arrived. Hence we need to utilise those few hours to ask God for forgiveness... You have to be convinced that those few hours left you in your life are very few. From there you will begin to live the happy life, the infinite paradise. Be optimistic. The prophet was always optimistic." Everybody hates death, fears death. But only those, the believers who know the life after death and the reward after death, would be the ones who will be seeking death.... Try to pray the morning prayer with an open heart. Don't leave but when you have washed for the prayer." When the hijackers stepped on board, they were to say: "Oh God, open all doors for me. Oh God who answers prayers and answers those who ask you, I am asking you for your help. I am asking you for forgiveness. I am asking you to lighten my way. I am asking you to lift the burden I feel." The last prayer concluded: "There is no God but God, I being a sinner. We are of God, and to God we return." The document recovered from the crash site in Pennsylvania bore many similarities, with some additional details. It exhorted the hijackers to shave their body hair the night "Remember: it is a raid for the sake of Allah. Recite the prayer. As you take the seat, recite the prayer. Mention Allah a lot." When the hijacking begins, "Shout Allah is great because this shout strikes terrors in the hearts of the infidels," the document said. And the moment of death should be accompanied by the basic statement of belief recited by all Muslims at the call to prayer: "Seconds before the target, your last words should be, there is no god but Allah. Mohammed is his messenger. (From The Independent, 9 September 2012)
  30. 30. Islamophobia We should invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to Christianity. We weren’t punctilious about locating and punishing only Hitler and his top officers. We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That’s war. And this is war. - Ann Counter, National Review Islam is something we can’t afford any more in the Netherlands. I want the fascist Qur-an banned. We need to stop the Islamisation of the Netherlands. That means no more mosques, no more Islamic schools, no more imams. - Geert Wilders, Dutch politician These people [Arabs and Muslims] need to be forcibly converted to Christianity ... It’s the only thing that can probably turn them into human beings. - Michael Savage, syndicated radio host Islam has attacked us ... The God of Islam is not the same God.... Islam is a very evil religion. All the values that we as a
  31. 31. Islam has attacked us ... The God of Islam is not the same God.... Islam is a very evil religion. All the values that we as a nation hold dear, they don’t share those same values at all, these countries that have the majority of Muslims. - Franklin Graham, Christian evangelist
  32. 32. The Bible and Violence
  33. 33. Derek Flood graphically displays Paul’s edited quotation of Psalm 18:41-49 and Deuteronomy 32:43 in Romans 15:8-10. Notice what Paul picks to retain and what he chooses to reject: For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs so that the Gentiles may glorify God for his mercy, as it is written: “I destroyed my foes. They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—to the LORD, but he did not answer…. He is the God who avenges me, who puts the Gentiles under me…. Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles; I will sing hymns to your name.” (Ps. 18:41–49).
  34. 34. Again, it says, “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants; he will take vengeance on his enemies and make atonement for his land and people.” (Deut. 32:43)
  35. 35. Flood concludes: “Paul is making a very different point from the original intent of these Psalms. In fact, he is making the opposite point—we should not cry out for God’s wrath and judgment [on the other], because we are all sinners in need of mercy.” He concludes, “This is not a case of careless out-of- context proof-texting; it is an artful and deliberate reshaping of these verses … from their original cry for divine violence into a confession of universal culpability that highlights our need for mercy.”
