Dow High e2020 orientation

  1. 1. What is Credit Recovery and why am I here?  Credit recovery is essentially repeating a course that you have failed previously.  Credit recovery is done using online courses, through software called e2020.  Students will repeat required courses first, and if they are still shy the credits necessary to be on pace for graduation, will then move to elective courses.  Your counselor will determine what course is best for you, in consultation with the student and Manager of Online Learning.
  2. 2. What Courses are Available?  Science  Biology (Semester 1 and 2)  Survey of Biology (Semester 1 and 2)  Survey of Physics (Semester 1 and 2)  Physics (Semester 1 and 2)  Chemistry (Semester 1 and 2)  Social Studies  Economics  Government  US History (Semester 1 and 2)  World History (Semester 1 and 2)

  5. 5. What is e2020?  e2020 is software that MPS uses for students to take entire classes online.  Students can work on this anywhere that there is a high-speed Internet connection.  Students can work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if they choose.  The courses are set up in much the same way as a traditional classroom.  There will be vocabulary, lectures, homework, journals, quizzes, tests, and exams.  Students must have an overall grade of 70% to gain credit.
  6. 6. What e2020 is not  e2020 is not easier than school.  Online classes require a different skill set than in a traditional setting.  Students need to be able to devote uninterrupted time to e2020 daily/nightly.  Students need to have self-discipline to stay “on track” in order to finish on time.  Students need to be able to learn the material on their own, with little face-to-face help of a teacher.  Students need to be able to summarize main ideas from lectures and take good, high quality notes.
  7. 7. Computer Skills Needed  Must have an MPS user account.  Must be able to use Internet browsers and, after some training, the e2020 software.  Must be able to send and receive email.  Must be able to copy text, paste it into Microsoft Word and be able to find appropriate network printer.
  8. 8. Features of e2020  Depending on the course, a “pre-quizzing” option may be available.  This option allows students the opportunity to exempt material is they can score 80% on the quiz before learning the material.  The rationale behind this is that students have prior knowledge in the course and can use that to speed up the course. Note: This option is not available in all courses.  When students take notes, they have the ability to pause the lecture, rewind the lecture, and re-watch the lecture to ensure they have all the material in their notes.
  9. 9. Features of e2020 (continued)  Self-paced  Students can work as quickly as they like.  Ability to re-take assessments  Students MUST score 70% on assessments (quizzes, tests, exams). If they score less than 70%, students must retake it, with only the highest score being recorded.  Ability to use notes on all assignments, including assessments
  10. 10. Online Courses vs. Traditional Online Traditional  Self-Paced  Students responsible for doing work  Must pass every assessment with a 70%  Must take notes  Cannot easily ask questions if you don’t understand content  Must work outside of the classroom  Teacher paced  Defined deadlines  Passing assessments is not mandatory  Taking notes may not be mandatory  Can ask for help from the teacher  May not have to work outside of the classroom
  11. 11. How is e2020 set up?
  12. 12. Vocabulary
  13. 13. Lecture
  14. 14. Journal
  15. 15. Quiz
  16. 16. You’re at a Test! When you see this dialog box, it means you are at a test and your teacher must review your work to ensure that you have 70% or higher on every quiz. You will not be able to move on until your teacher has reviewed your work.
  17. 17. Emailing your Instructor  Reasons to email your instructor:  You are unsure what to do!  You need help on content  You need retakes on a quiz  There was a computer glitch  You need a test removed so you can work at home  To email the Manager of Online Learning at Dow High (Mr. Mishler) go here:   To email the Manger of Online Learning at Midland High (Mr. Leffingwell) go here: 
  18. 18. Emailing (continued)  The instructors will make every attempt to answer your emails quickly, however don’t expect an immediate response if you send an email at night or on the weekends.
  19. 19. How to Be Successful  Take notes on all lectures. Remember, any notes you take, you can use on assessments.  Click Here for Help on "How to Take Notes“  Use the Assignment Calendar to track progress  Click Here for Assignment Calendar (video)  View your Progress Report often  Click Here to See Progress Report (video)  Use eNotes as your method of taking notes  Click Here for eNotes Demonstration (video)
  20. 20. Classroom Rules  Absolutely no food/drink!  Any cell phone, MP3 player, or any other type of electronic device is prohibited and will be confiscated.  The only website you are allowed to be on is e2020, no EXCEPTIONS!  Instructors have the ability to view your computer screen at all times.  Any student disrupting or distracting other students will be removed from class without exception.  All students will do their own work. If you are stuck, ask the instructor, not the student sitting next to you or Google (or any other website)!
  21. 21. What to do when there is a sub  Work on your course as normal.  The instructor at the other school will be watching your computer screens. e2020 is the ONLY site to be on.  If you need approval for a test, email the instructor at the other school.  If you need retakes for a quiz, email the instructor from the other school.  Click here to see emails.
  22. 22. Quiz Time  If there is a sub in your room, that means e2020 will not work and students are not expected to do work.  True  False
  23. 23. Working from Home  Students are encouraged to work from home to supplement work in the classroom.  The first time you log in from home, make sure you check to see if you have the latest Plugins on your computer.
  24. 24. Working from Home  When working from home, you may need to have a test removed so you can continue working.  If you make it to a test, e2020 will not allow you to move on.  In order to continue to work, you need to email your instructor asking them to remove your test.  Click Here to see Emails.  The instructor will remove your test while you are outside of the classroom, and then put it back in when you return. After having a test removed, expect your first assignment to be a test when you return to the eLearning computer labs.
  25. 25. Quiz Time  Because students can work from home, there is no need to come to the classroom everyday.  True  False
  26. 26. e2020 Procedures  When logging off e2020, make sure you sign off, not just simply hitting the “X” in the top right hand corner.  View video of how to log off correctly.  What to do if you fail a quiz:  1st attempt: review the questions you got wrong and study lecture/notes again.  2nd attempt: Sit down with your instructor reviewing questions. Also expect to re-watch the lecture while taking notes before additional retakes are given to you.  Do not move on to new material until you have passed the current quiz.
  27. 27. Quiz Time!  1.) What percentage do you need to gain credit in a credit recovery class?  60%  70%  80%
  28. 28. Quiz Time!  What tool helps you stay on track by detailing what you need to get done?  Assignment Calendar  Progress Report  Tool Button
  29. 29. First Assignment  Your first assignment is to print your assignment calendar for the first week of class.  If you need a refresher on how to do that, click here.
  30. 30. We’re Here to Help  The eLearning staff is here to help you be successful. It’s our goal that you complete your course in an expedient time and continue on your path to graduation on time.
