Overcoming Fear

  1. 1. Many times in conversation I hear people say “the world is doomed”, “the world is in chaos”, “Technology is taking our jobs”, “the aliens are coming!” ! What we see in our media and the world around us - wars, famine, crime, inequality, corruption - is not irreversible, in fact, we have the capacity to change the world. I believe humanity is destined for greatness. Each and every one of us is AMAZING. And the only thing holding us back from AMAZING is FEAR.
  2. 2. WE ARE NOT BORN WITH A SENSE OF FEAR.
  3. 3. ON THE CONTRARY, WE ARE BORN WITH AN ENDLESS CAPACITY FOR LOVE AND CREATIVITY AND OPTIMISM.
  4. 4. BUT WE ARE ALSO BORN WITH A SURVIVAL INSTINCT.
  5. 5. THIS INSTINCT HELPS KEEP US SAFE. HELPS US LEARN AND GROW.
  6. 6. AND AS WE GROW, WE LEARN HOW TO SPEAK.
  7. 7. WHAT TO SAY.
  8. 8. WE LEARN MANNERS.
  9. 9. WE LEARN HOW TO DRESS.
  10. 10. BUT WE ALSO LEARN NOT TO SAY CERTAIN THINGS.
  11. 11. NOT to behave in certain ways.
  12. 12. NOT TO BE SEEN IN CERTAIN PLACES.
  13. 13. NOT TO STAND OUT (UNLESS OF COURSE STANDING OUT, MAKES YOU LOOK COOL).
  14. 14. WE LEARN TO CONFORM TO OUR ‘GROUP’. TO FIT IN. TO BE SUBSERVIENT. TO BLEND....IN ORDER TO SURVIVE.
  15. 15. WE START TO DEVELOP A FEAR OF LOOKING WEAK. FEAR OF SOUNDING DUMB. FEAR OF MAKING MISTAKES. FEAR OF FAILURE. FEAR OF NOT FITTING IN. FEAR OF STANDING OUT. THE PRESSURE TO BE “RIGHT” OR FEAR OF BEING WRONG!
  16. 16. SO, FEAR IS SOMETHING THAT WE LEARN.
  17. 17. FEAR MANIFESTS ITSELF IN WAYS WE MIGHT NOT DIRECTLY ATTRIBUTE TO FEAR!
  18. 18. FEAR IS INHIBITION. FEAR IS A PRISON. FEAR HOLDS US BACK. ! SOURCE: HTTP://HASZCZU.DEVIANTART.COM/
  19. 19. Ego has a lot to do with fear. WHEN WE HAVE AN OVER- DEVELOPED EGO, WE LET OUR FEAR OVERCOME US. ! WHEN WE GIVE-IN TO FEAR, WE LET OUR EGO RULE. ! SOURCE: HTTP:// THENASS.DEVIANTART.CO M
  20. 20. OUR WORLD IS GOVERNED BY FEAR BASED SYSTEMS. GOVERNMENT, RELIGION, COMMERCE. THESE SYSTEMS (OR AT LEAST THE WAY THEY HAVE WORKED THROUGHOUT THE AGES) SEEK TO KEEP PEOPLE LIVING IN FEAR - FEAR OF OTHERS, FEAR OF LIVING IN POVERTY, FEAR OF ACCIDENTS - THIS IS HOW THEY CAN CONTROL THE MASSES. BECAUSE BY USING FEAR, THEY CAN KEEP PEOPLE DISTRACTED AND DIVIDED.
  21. 21. SO, TO BE CREATIVE, TO PROMOTE PEACE, TO PROMOTE COOPERATION. WE MUST OVERCOME OUR FEARS. WE MUST UNLEARN FEAR.
  22. 22. THE OPPOSITE OF FEAR IS INCLUSIVENESS, SUSTAINABILITY, NON-JUDGEMENT, OPENNESS, KNOWLEDGE, COMPASSION. ! SOURCE: HTTP://BERKOZTURK.DEVIANTART.COM
  23. 23. AND THESE TRAITS LEAD TO CREATIVITY. ! SOURCE: HTTP://AI-SHUU.DEVIANTART.COM
  24. 24. BECAUSE THEN PEOPLE AREN’T AFRAID OF UNDERSTANDING, CONNECTING UNRELATED IDEAS, EXPRESSION.
  25. 25. WHEN IT COMES TO BUSINESSES AND THE WAY THEY ARE RUN. ACCORDING TO BUSINESS INSIDER THE MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANIES UNDERSTAND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO STAY AT THE FOREFRONT OF THEIR INDUSTRY IS BY MAINTAINING A STRONG COMPANY CULTURE OF FEARLESSNESS. ! 26. 26. SURVIVAL EGO A LARGER GOAL ACCORDING TO THE AUTHORS OF TRIBAL LEADERSHIP, ALL COMPANIES EXIST IN ONE OF FIVE STAGES. THE FIRST TWO ARE ABOUT SURVIVAL, THE THIRD IS ABOUT THE EGO (EVERYONE IS OUT FOR THEMSELVES), AND THE LAST TWO ARE WHERE EMPLOYEES ARE FOCUSED ON SOMETHING LARGER THAN THEMSELVES, WHICH HELPS THEM ACHIEVE BREAK-THROUGHS IN INNOVATION. 27. 27. MOST COMPANIES GET CAUGHT UP IN "STAGE 3" BEHAVIORS BECAUSE THAT'S HOW OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS STRUCTURED, WITH A FOCUS ON INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT. THE AUTHORS EXPLAIN THAT "A PERSON ENTERS STAGE 3 WHEN HE FINDS HIS GROOVE, ACQUIRES CONFIDENCE, AND IS RECOGNIZED FOR HIS GIFTS. PEOPLE TOLD US ABOUT AN AWAKENING OF PERSONAL AMBITION THAT TURNED TO A DRIVE FOR CAREER SUCCESS, COUPLED WITH RECOGNITION THAT THEY HAD WORK TO DO." THAT'S NOT BAD IN AND OF ITSELF, BUT SOLELY FOCUSING ON PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT IS LIMITING. IT BECOMES A ZERO-SUM GAME. AT THE END OF THE DAY, THERE'S ONLY SO MUCH YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH BY YOURSELF. 28. 28. TO BREAK THROUGH TO THE NEXT STAGE, LEADERS HAVE TO MOTIVATE EMPLOYEES TO FOCUS ON THE ORGANIZATION AND ITS MISSION —  AND TO VIEW THEIR COLLEAGUES AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THEIR SUCCESS. COMPANIES LIKE TESLA AND GOOGLE HAVE PULLED THIS OFF. THE AUTHORS GIVE IDEO AS AN EXAMPLE, WHERE "IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN ITS STAGE 4 CULTURE THAN TO WIN THE NEXT CONTRACT OR HIRE THE LATEST STANFORD GRADUATE." THERE ARE FEWER ORGANIZATIONAL BOUNDARIES IN STAGE 4 AND 5 COMPANIES, AND LESS BUREAUCRACY OVERALL. LEADERS DON'T RUN THEIR COMPANIES WITH "COMMAND AND CONTROL" ORDERS; INSTEAD THEY GIVE EMPLOYEES ENORMOUS LEVERAGE AND CREATIVE FREEDOM. THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH TRUST AND OWNERSHIP:  "[STAGE 5] REVOLVES AROUND INFINITE POTENTIAL AND HOW THE GROUP IS GOING TO MAKE HISTORY — NOT TO BEAT A COMPETITOR, BUT BECAUSE DOING SO WILL MAKE A GLOBAL IMPACT. ... TEAMS AT STAGE 5 HAVE PRODUCED MIRACULOUS INNOVATIONS” THIS STAGE IS PURE LEADERSHIP, VISION, INSPIRATION AND A CULTURE OF FEARLESSNESS AND TRUST! ! SOURCE: HTTP://ARTGERM.DEVIANTART.COM
  29. 29. SO TODAY WE’VE COVERED MANY COMPLEX TOPICS LIKE CHILD AND ADULT PSYCHOLOGY, OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM, THE NEW WORLD ORDER, SOCIAL MEDIA. ! SOURCE: HTTP://MBYM.DEVIANTART.COM/
  30. 30. Be amazing. Be fearless. AND I HOPE THAT I’VE CONVINCED YOU THAT ONLY WHEN WE CONQUER OUR FEAR CAN WE ACHIEVE GREATNESS - WHICH IS OUR DESTINY :)
  31. 31. Be brave. WE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
