  • Effectiveness The extent to which something achieves pre-specified goals ‘Does it work?’ To understand teacher effectiveness, we need toknow what goals effective teachers should bemeeting Spend a few minutes with those around you trying tocreate a list of ‘appropriate goals forteachers/teaching’
  • Effectiveness To know whether teachers are effective, we wouldneed to have some means of measuring the extent towhich these goals are met What kind of evidence would be appropriate formeasuring teacher effectiveness in relation to each ofthese goals? View slide
  • Efficiency Efficiency is a measure of the amount of resourcesrequired in order to meet the goals Something that can achieve the same goals usingfewer resources is more efficient If we have already specified the goals ofteachers/teaching, we can think about whatresources are used to meet those goals Spend a few moments with those around youspecifying the resources that go into classroomteaching View slide
  • Enhancing Efficiency Move to a new group – ideally with someone youhaven’t spoken to before – and spend a few minutesdiscussing ways to enhance the efficiency ofclassroom teaching How could you achieve the same goals – not inferiorgoals – with fewer resources?
  • Efficacy Term has many meanings in different fields In education it relates to a teacher or student’sconfidence in his/her own ability to be effective Sometimes described as ‘self-efficacy’, anddistinguished from other people’s views about aperson’s ability to be effective We will use a device-based polling system to allowyou to share anonymous information about your self-efficacy
