The Geography of Colombia• Located in Northern South America• The area total is 1,138,910 sq. km.• The area covered in water is 100,210 sq. km.• The country is covered in tropics along the coast line and the East plains• There are volcanic hazards in the mountains, also there are earthquakes, and droughts
  3. 3. Government of Colombia• Democratic tradition• The government is divided into 32 departments and one capital district• Chief of State/Head of Government = President. Who serves a 4 yr. term by direct national vote.

History of Colombia• Colombia was one of the three countries emerging from Gran Colombia in 1830.• A 40 yr. insurgent campaign went on against the government during the 20th century.• The insurgent group is not powerful enough to overthrow the government. Other countries are worried about the violence in Colombia spilling into there countries.
  5. 5. Commerce of Colombia• GDP= $435,400,000,000 in U.S. dollars• In pesos it is 783,515,362,000,000• Colombia uses the Colombian peso• Government= Republic
  6. 6. Education• Due to shortage of education facilities/ schools, the Colombian government has adopted an automatic promotion policy• Secondary education is divided into 4 yrs.• This period is from 6th through 9th grade

  9. 9. Spanish Speakers/ Ethnic groups• 58% of Colombian population is Mestizo, or mixed European, and Amerindian• More than 2/3 of Colombians live in urban areas• Today more than 50 different indigenous ethnic groups are in Colombia
