Facts Continued•70% of the women/50% of the men are illiterate.• Less than half the population have access to safewater.• The average life expectancy is 42 years old.• 25% of all children born die before their 5thbirthday.• One out of six mothers die in childbirth- thehighest in the world!
Facts About School in Sierra Leone•Sierra Leonean parents have to pay fees for theirchildren to attend school.•It cost 20,000 Leones per term to attend juniorsecondary school. How many dollars is this?•Students wear a school uniform that their parents mustalso buy.
School Facts Continued•The typical class size is 55 to 60 students per class.• Sadly because their classes are so large, 25% ofthe students fail.• Many teachers in Sierra Leone have no training inhow to teach.• The curriculum is just a list of subjects and topicsthe teacher must teach with no textbook.• Teachers have only a blackboard and a piece ofchalk to use to teach their students.
