Notes on slide 1

One of the fundamentals of getting the word out, the traditional press release has been around for decades. It is a tried-and-true format, written in a journalistic “inverted pyramid” style. But is there a relationship? Is there a local angle? Helps editors “visualize” the story format.

On October 28, 1906, public relation expert Ivy Lee was working with the Pennsylvania Railroad, when a tragic train accident happened. Fifty passengers were killed when a three-car train of the Pennsylvania Railroad's new electric service jumped a trestle at Atlantic City, New Jersey, and plunged into the Thoroughfare creek.
Ivy Lee convinced the railroad company to release what could be considered the first press release to journalists, before any rumors were spread and reported on. Ivy Lee created a public statement about the accident, and presented it to journalists at the location of the incident. The New York Times printed the press release word-for-word on Oct. 30, 1906.

The goal of using press releases has long been to get media coverage (“clips”) in traditional print publications.

...Or in broadcast media.

But the notion of press releases is changing. Now, they are a powerful tool to reach consumers directly, often bypassing the mainstream media.

  12. PR was always supposed to be about public relations. We’ve fallen into this idea that all PR is about journalists, and it’s certainly not. Social media enables us to reach real influencers who care about what we have to say – as long as we’re genuine and honest. Jason Kintzler Founder, Pitchengine.com
