      • The online version of Chemical Abstracts
      • Major database of chemistry
      • Guide to journal articles and other types of publication
      • Also provides data
    4. SciFinder Scholar
      • Search engine for journal articles in chemistry
      • And also…
        • Patents
        • Conference papers
        • Standards
        • Dissertations
      • Largest bibliographic database in the world
    5. SciFinder Scholar covers
      • References
      • Substances
      • Reactions
      • Also includes a version of Medline
    6. What has stayed the same?
      • One simultaneous user
      • On-campus only
      • 15-minute timeout
      • No substructure searching in Explore Substances
      • Fundamental underlying structure is the same
    7. Explore References
      • Research topics
        • general subjects
      • Author name
      • Company name
      • Patent
    8. Analysis and Refine
      • Analysis
        • Analyse your search by selecting particular search terms, authors, document types, etc
      • Refine
        • Narrow down your search by selecting particular search terms, authors, document types, etc
      • Generally much easier in the new version
    9. Result display
      • Ordered by accession number (roughly by date)
      • Display includes beginning of abstract
      • Results split on many pages
    10. Explore Substances
      • Structure searching easy to find
        • Requires Java 1.6.0
        • On clusters , you will be asked to run Java Runtime Environment
        • Say yes to every question
      • Name/ CAS number/molecular formula searching
        • Click on the links on the left-hand side
    11. Explore Reactions
      • Also uses structure searching facility
      • Substructure searching possible
    12. Printing and downloading
      • Printing reasonably straightforward
      • Downloading
        • Use Export rather than Save
        • Security settings mean you usually have to repeat first attempt
    13. EndNote and SciFinder Scholar
      • Save results to a file using the Tagged format
      • Import the file into EndNote or EndNote Web using the Scifinder import filter
    14. Advantages of Web version
      • Clearer, more intuitive
      • Horrible scrolling has gone
      • Can navigate via breadcrumbs at top of display
      • Can set up alerts
        • Create Keep Me Posted in Answer Sets
    15. Disadvantages
      • May be slightly slower?
      • Results split on many pages
        • In structure searching, the compound you want is usually the last
      • Need to run Java on clusters
