This document summarizes Cisco's Connected Healthy Children Initiative, which creates a Virtual Pediatric Network (VPN) to improve pediatric cancer care. The VPN brings together pediatric oncologists from six medical centers using Cisco TelePresence video conferencing. This allows experts to collaborate and share clinical information to provide personalized cancer treatment for children. The long-term goal is for the VPN model to help 30% of children with cancer in the US through shared knowledge and collective intelligence of medical experts.
5. Pediatric Oncology
Quick Facts
Cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death
ages 1-14 in the U.S.
A child diagnosed with cancer every hour in
the United States
Solid tumor cure rates have not increased
in last decade
NCI budget gives only 4% of funding
to pediatric cancer
Pharmaceutical companies fund
60% of adult oncology research
but virtually no pediatric cancer
research (not profitable)

9. Virtual Pediatric Network (VPN)
Goals
Innovate pediatric cancer care across 6 centers
throughout the US in the first year
Timeframe 3 years: Phase I deploy proof of concept
network and conduct user experience engineering to
develop the VPN model; Phase II demonstrate the
value proposition of the VPN model; Phase III expand
the model to the national scale
Long term Impact: 30% of children with cancer
in the US
12. Strategic Outcome
Transform pediatric cancer care by
creating a completely novel collaborative
system for care delivery
Differentiate through the implementation of
the TelePresence platform and IoE
innovations to address children’s
healthcare needs
13. Metrics and Innovation
Metrics:
Quantitative and qualitative metrics of collaborative care delivery
decisions will include efficiency of remote patient consults, frequency
of usage of network to impact care delivery, types of decisions being
made, and perceived value added to care delivery.
Innovation:
The goal is to transition the application of TelePresence from a
communication platform to a collaboration ecosystem. Integration of
IoE innovations to transform care delivery workflows.
Research plan:
User engineering plan will apply an agile approach to collect user
feedback and rapidly iterate the experience by integrating new
requirements to rapidly evolve the solution an maximize the clinical
value proposition.
