  1. 1. File Sharing <br />in today’s <br />Education Sector<br />ICT Assignment 1 Blog & Presentation<br />By Laura Pagano & Bradley Kemp<br />http://bradlaura.wordpress.com/2010/04/06/file-sharing/<br />
  2. 2. Technology/application & explanation of how it operates<br /><ul><li>File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digitally stored information, such as computer programs, multi-media (audio, video), documents, or electronic books.
  3. 3. Common methods are manual sharing using removable media, centralised computer file server installations on computer networks, World Wide Web-based hyperlinked documents, and the use of distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) networking.   </li></li></ul><li>In today’s world the most common problem with file-sharing sites is the ease with which they allow you to break copyright law. Sharing or downloading copyrighted material without permission is illegal and if you share copyrighted files without the permission of the copyright holder you are breaking the law and may face civil and/or criminal prosecution.  <br />Piratebay.org trial 2009 – precedence for other file sharing programs/users?<br />http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcCfQ8AoB9k&feature=related<br />
  4. 4. Common file sharing programs<br /><ul><li>Dropbox - enables users to drop any file into a designated folder that is then synced to the cloud and to any other of the user's computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web
  5. 5. Limewire - P2P file sharing program connects to the Gnutella P2P network. Limewire client software is widely recognized for its clean user interface that does not contain adware
  6. 6. Kazaa - One of the most popular P2P file sharing programs of all time. However due to increased adware and 'fake files' its popularity is decreasing rapidily.
  7. 7. Ares - Offers music and other file sharing and include a built-in chat service aswell as no adware and fast connection times.
  8. 8. BitTorrent - P2P software application that allowes user to download mostly movies and television programs.
  9. 9. Shareaza - offers a powerful search engine capable of connecting to multiple popular P2P networks including eDonkey, BitTorrent and Gnutella </li></li></ul><li><ul><li>NASA’s Visable Earth site used to distribute all photographs and animations directly through their Web site.
  10. 10. Some of the images had extremely large file sizes. These took a long time to download, used significant bandwidth and sometimes put such a load on the server that users would be disconnected before their downloads were complete.
  11. 11. To solve the problem, NASA took advantage of the popular P2P technology, BitTorrent, which distributes their larger files into small pieces via other users who have also made copies of the files available.
  12. 12. This reduced the strain on NASA’s image servers and made for a more reliable user experience. </li></ul>(Case Western Reserve University 2005)Case Western Reserve University (2005), Case Peer to Peer Filesharing Advisories, viewed 30 March 2010, http://www.case.edu/its/security/docs/aware/file_sharing.html   <br />Example <br />
  13. 13. How it’s being utilised in Education <br /><ul><li>In today’s education sector, file sharing is used in primary and secondary schools between staff, teachers, students and parents.
  14. 14. Teachers use their computers/laptops for emails, student marks, setting tasks (diary, calendar system), sending out homework, roll call and collaborating with other teachers as well as meetings and conferences.
  15. 15. Most schools provide their students with an individual school email to communicate with peers and teachers. Students share their files with peers.
  16. 16. Exterior communication is used with parents for interviews, newsletters and feedback.
  17. 17. There are many ways of how file sharing is used today in education:</li></li></ul><li><ul><li>E-mailing is a server based digital mean of communication. In the field of education and teaching, it allows teachers to communicate and collaborate either one to one or amongst a group of colleagues.
  18. 18. As well as this, communicating hyper-links to exterior web pages for relevant information is also a useful tool.
  19. 19. Most importantly, is the ability to attach files to emails which can help moving around soft copies of information rather than sending out hard copy papers from class to class.
  20. 20. E-mail proves to be an efficient file sharing mean which is commonly utilised within the field of education and teaching.</li></ul>Emails<br />
  21. 21. File Servers <br /><ul><li>File servers are a necessity on any school network.
  22. 22. There first most function is providing a shared mean of file access and storage.
  23. 23. File servers are utilised in many different manners within an education environment.
  24. 24. File sharing between students and teachers is a useful tool for submitting work promptly without the hassle of hard copies or teachers posting useful files and information up for students to have access to.</li></li></ul><li>File Servers Database<br /><ul><li>File servers offer a data basing component. When used in the correct manner, it can increase efficiency and effectiveness amongst a school environment.
  25. 25. A common way it is being operated amongst many school systems at the moment is by indexing a database of student files. This way these student files are accessible to staff at any given time, when needed from a networked device (Laptop, Computer, Handheld smart phone etc).
  26. 26. This is a more suitable solution in comparison to the old file cabinet system and sifting through papers.
  27. 27. It also withholds a greater degree of integrity to the management of the files. As well as this, file server databases are sometimes utilised as a roll call and mark system for teachers to access.</li></li></ul><li>Utilisation<br />File sharing is being utilised in the area of education and teaching. File sharing in schools gives an opportunity to network with other people. It is used to share ideas with others, regardless of geographical location. For example, teachers that are working in a small sized school with a handful of staff, can express ideas with teachers in other schools. This allows them to obtain and store information easily. As file sharing looks upon technology, it also improves learning for all; teachers and students. All schools have technological infrastructure in place (hardware etc). This allows teachers to make better use of these resources, which involves ‘file sharing’. It is therefore used as a learning tool for students and teachers, making the teachers apply this effectively. The outcome of file sharing will develop in schools, with new ideas and programs progressing along the years.<br />
