  • Strategies for TakingStandardized Tests
  • ‘Twas the Night BeforeTesting• Go to bed on time.•Put a few number 2 pencilswith erasers in your backpack.•Solve family/friend problems beforethe testing date.•Talk to your parents about anyconcerns that you might have about thetest.
  • The Morning of Testing• Start your day as you alwaysdo.• Eat a good breakfast.• Think of what you will do torelax after you get home fromschool.• Think Positive!Think Positive!
  • Multiple Choice Questions• If you do not understand thedirections, ask for help.• Read the question and allallanswer choices beforemarking anything.
  • Pace Yourself• Don’t spend too much time onany one question. Do your bestand then move on.• Answers the easiest questionsfirst, but be sure to go back tothose questions you skipped.
  • Multiple Choice Questions• Do not change your answersunless you are very uncertainabout your first answer choice.• Try to answer every question.Make the most intelligentguess you can.
  • The Process of Elimination• After you have been through all ofthe questions once, go back and findquestions you have someknowledge about and eliminatechoices that you know are incorrect.I know C isn’tthe answer!

  • Answering Questions• Dont guess blindly, but if youhave time to think about thebest answer choice, make it!
  • Skip, Return, Check• If you finish early, check tomake sure you haveanswered all questions.
  • Key Words• Find key wordskey words or phrasesphrasesin the question that will helpyou choose the correctanswer.
  • Are we communicating?• Make sure you understandwhat the question is asking.• Be sure you are responding tothe question that is beingasked.
  • Reading Passages• If the test requires you to readpassages and then answerquestions about what you read,read the questionsread the questions firstfirst.•By doing this, you will know whatyou are looking for as you read.This also helps you go faster onthe test.
  • Reading Passages• When there are severalquestions about a readingpassage or chart, look forcluesclues in other questions thatwill help you with those itemsabout which you are unsure.
  • Math Computation• When using scratch paper on a mathtest, double check to make sure thatyou have copied the problemcorrectly from the test booklet!
  • Math Computation• Line up place value correctly on yourscratch paper (thousands, hundreds,tens, ones) or the answer will beincorrect.
  • Math Computation• If your answer does not match oneof the choices, reread the problem,recopy the numbers, and trysolving it again.
  • A Matter of Time• If any time remains, spend it onthose questions about which youknow nothing or almost nothing.• As you go back through, do notchange all answers.• Remember: Your firstguess is usually right.
  • It’s About Time• Don’t spend toomuch time rewritingor obsessing aboutneatness.• Don’t worry if you runout of time.
  • Final Tips• Fill in bubbles fully, write neatly,and erase stray marks.• Double-check the test number inyour test booklet against theanswer sheet every few questionsto be sure you haven’t gotten onthe wrong number.
  • The Death Grip• If your arm tires during testing itis probably due to the grip thatyou have on your pencil.• Relax the grip and give thosemuscles a break.• Do not do arm exercises duringtesting as this disturbs others.
