    12. 12. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Benefits of Emotional Intelligence…  85-95% of the difference between a “good leader” and an “excellent leader” is due to emotional intelligence. (Goleman)  The more senior the leader, the more important emotional competencies become. (Goleman)  75% of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies. (Center for Creative Leadership)  The reasons for losing customers & clients are 70% EQ related. (Forum Corporation)  There is convincing evidence that psychological states affect health. (Seligman)
    13. 13. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Research Findings  Older groups score significantly higher than younger groups on EQ measures.  No significant differences exist between different ethnic groups.  The most successful students are more emotionally and socially intelligent.  Emotional Intelligence can improve with sustained effort and systematic programs.  Overall, men and women score about the same, but they score higher in different areas. – Women tend to score higher in areas of interpersonal EQ (empathy, social responsibility) – Men tend to score higher in areas of intrapersonal EQ (self-regard, self- reliance, coping with stress, etc.) …Bar-On
    14. 14. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC What are emotions?
    15. 15. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Emotions are PHYSICAL and MENTAL states that predispose action and are usually produced by perceptions of situations we encounter. • Emotions are produced when we experience a change in the flow of life. • Emotions reside in our bodies as well as our minds. (A shift in our mood produces biological modifications i.e. slower heart rate, a higher level of adrenaline, sweating, fatigue, stomach ache, etc.) • A shift in our body can change our emotions. • Posture can indicate a particular mood i.e. contraction and expansion • Emotions show up in our language and our voice. • Emotions are a key component of learning • Emotions affect our possibilities
    16. 16. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC The Limbic System is the Center of Emotions in the Brain
    17. 17. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Emotions Affect ALL decisions Think of a recent decision you made… Ask yourself why you made it …repeatedly.
    18. 18. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC A Brain that Cannot Feel Cannot Make Up It’s Mind Before a person can make a decision, impulses tied to information travel to and from the neo-cortex and limbic cortex. Emotional reactions to that information determine the decisions an individual makes in any situation. All decisions depend on emotions. According to Lehrer (2009), “A brain that can’t feel can’t make up its mind.” Even for those who are very logical, brain research shows that conscious decisions are dependent on the limbic cortex, the emotional part of the brain (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon, 2001). …from Connect: Affective Leadership for Effective Results
    19. 19. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Limbic Resonance • • Because of Limbic Resonance, the physical body changes in response to one’s own emotions and in response to emotions of other people. Changes in respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and hormones consistent with other peoples’ emotional states occur when interacting with other humans, particularly when looking into their eyes (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon, 2001).
    20. 20. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC This means that: •We can sense other peoples’ emotions by accessing our own. •Other people can physically sense our emotions. •Leaders should be aware of what emotions they are generating.
    21. 21. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Mind, Body, Language & Emotion are all tied together
    22. 22. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Practice Get into a happy body and tell a story about something that made you very angry or sad. Get into a sad body and tell a story about something that made you very happy or excited. How difficult is it to do those?

    25. 25. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC What moods do you live in? Go to THIS LINK to analyze your moods and emotions.
    26. 26. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC How do your emotions affect you? •Describe what happens in your body when you are fearful, angry, joyful or disappointed. •Consider an emotion you experience such as anger or sadness. • What language is possible in each of these emotions? • What possibilities are open or closed? • How does that emotion predispose you to act?
    27. 27. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC We Learn Emotions Through Immersion Emotions are learned; they are not inborn. (Goleman)
    28. 28. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Learning Emotions is Different than Learning Physics •If we were around people who laughed a lot, we have a greater capacity to laugh. •If we never learn enthusiasm, we don't show it. •We can change our emotional impact through awareness and thoughtful reaction to what we observe. •We can also change our emotions through coaching.
    29. 29. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC What emotions did you learn at home? What emotions did you NOT learn at home? How do they affect your decisions? How do they affect your possibilities?
    30. 30. Creative Commons Licensing Leadership Options, LLC Emotions are contagious… We catch them & we spread them.
