Here is an example of an RSS feed. It is written in XML. Note each entry in the feed is enclosed in <item> tags

Why RSS? When original content is changed and the RSS feed is updated, consumers of that feed automagically receive the updated content.

Without RSS? You need to visit every web site individually to check if there is anything new.
