Overview <ul><li>My name is Ignacio Arcas </li></ul><ul><li>I started school in 1980 in Nerja, Spain </li></ul><ul><li>I graduated from high school in 1993 in Oregon </li></ul><ul><li>I first went to college at the University of Portland in 1993 </li></ul><ul><li>When I finish my degree, I hope to become a District Educational Technology Specialist </li></ul>
  3. 3. My definition of educational technology … is the dissemination of information in various modes, the ability to use technological resources, and the utilization of strong leadership skills to improve the quality of education.

  5. 5. Kindergarten technology <ul><li>IBM Computers hit the market for the first time. Not in Spain until 85-86. </li></ul><ul><li>We had a choice between VHS and Betamax (rarely available at school) </li></ul><ul><li>Music was now portable </li></ul>
  6. 6. High school technology <ul><li>The first laptops come out during my high school days. </li></ul><ul><li>Macintosh computers started to populate our schools </li></ul><ul><li>I learned BASIC that allowed me to create a computer program. A ball would cross my screen from corner to corner. </li></ul>
  7. 7. College technology <ul><li>The Internet and email became part of our lives. </li></ul><ul><li>Mosaic and Pine were the early browser and email programs. </li></ul><ul><li>HTML was the new language to learn. </li></ul><ul><li>From black & white to full color computers. </li></ul><ul><li>Doom was “it”. </li></ul>
  8. 8. A vivid technology learning experience <ul><li>The Internet became public and widely used. </li></ul><ul><li>The cell phone became manageable in size and price. </li></ul><ul><li>1.44mb disk was the beginning of everything small and powerful. </li></ul>
  9. 9. A technology I want to use in my classroom <ul><li>I would like to have a fully interactive classroom, that would allow my students to communicate and create authentic learning experiences. </li></ul>
  10. 10. My vision of the classroom of the future <ul><li>School buildings and classrooms will no longer be the norm. </li></ul><ul><li>Students will have access to any course, anywhere, in any language or setting. (Spanish taught in Spain by a Spanish Professor) </li></ul>
  11. 11. A challenge for teaching <ul><li>The lack of funding and training in the educational system will always act as a barrier to obtain the kind of technology and experiences our students are accustomed to. </li></ul>
