1. Writing a Novel: Get Your Act Right!
You are an aspiring writer and you want to develop a book which turns out
to be everyone’s favourite.
However, there are times
when you are all lost and
you don’t know what is to
be done next. Follow these
few tips and create a
wonderful novel.
Write What Interests You:
Think. Think like a reader first. What would you like to read the most?
What would your favourite novel be like? Select a genre. More
importantly, select a genre that you would be comfortable with. Do not
write without comfort. It is important to be in your own space. This will
help you to write from your heart and not just plainly from your head.
If you think you would like to read suspense the most, do not make an
attempt to write something like romance or history. In simple words,
write what you love!
Begin With A Character:
Make sure that your novel has a central character. Bring the character
to life. At the same time, make the character believable. Even if you
are writing a fantasy novel and your character has a third-eye or
webbed feet, make sure your novel explains it in a realistic manner. All
the same, you need to make sure that you are surprising yourself
(even if it is for a minute). If you cannot bring about the element of
surprise and interest to yourself, you can expect your story to fall flat.
Problems Are Important:
What is your novel all about if your character never falls into any crisis
and is leading a life on the rose petals? Give your character a gripping
problem. Make certain that your readers cannot predict what can be
2. done and they have no clue as to what will happen next. Predictable
novels are no fun to read.
Make Things Happen:
Do not keep describing details endlessly; you are not writing an essay.
Make things happen at regular intervals. Keep your readers glued to
your story. You don’t want them to skip a few pages. Keep your scenic
descriptions crisp and concise if they aren’t really important to your
story. Don’t keep ranting about the mountains, the trees and the
valleys.
Don’t Give Up:
There will be times when you face the writer’s block and you feel like
quitting. Don’t! Take a short, I repeat, a short break and then get back
to work. This will help your mind refresh and give you new ideas. On
the contrary, longer breaks will make you lazy and you might lose the
motivation entirely.
The most important thing to do, however, is to follow what your heart says.
Only you know what you want to talk about; write the way you want to,
without worrying about the conventional rules and regulations.
