Building Bridges with Books - Presentation Transcript

    1. Building Bridges with Books Our Story in Pictures
    2. A four-year scout exchange between Germany and Mongolia provided the basis for our book bridge.
    3. Facts Mongolia is four times bigger than Germany. x4= 357.000 km2 1.565.000 km2
    4. How everything started In 2005, German scouts travelled to Mongolia.
    5. Facts 3m people live in Mongolia. x 27 = 3m inhabitants 81m inhabitants
    6. Facts 25,000 people live in our partner city Arvaikheer. • Capital of the province Uurkhangai • Population: 25.622 (2008) • School kids: ca. 4.200 • Number of schools: 4 • Distance to capital Ulan Bator: 420km • Active scouts: approx. 100
    7. How everything started We were amazed by the beautiful landscape
    8. How everything started ...and the vastness of the Mongolian desert
    9. How everything started as well as the hospitality of our scouting friends
    10. The years after our first visit In 2006, Mongolian scouts visited Germany
    11. The years after our first visit In 2007, German scouts travelled again to Mongolia
    12. The years after our first visit In 2008, Mongolian scouts came again to Germany
    13. The idea to establish a book bridge In Mongolia, we also visited several schools
    14. The idea to establish a book bridge The lack of books in the countryside left a mark in us
    15. In the course of our exchange program, we noticed the lack of material at Mongolian schools. Pupils lack simple material which schould normally belong to every school in this word, e.g. books. Teachers are not well educated in the domain of interactive speaking- oriented class lessons. Schools lack class material and listening media which allow students to her native speackers of the English language.
    16. The idea to establish a book bridge End of 2008, the idea of our book bridge was born
    17. Why English books? We need to have a common language basis for our exchange program. English is an important language to speak if you want to find a job or study in Mongolia and the rest of the world. Books broaden your horizon and make you understand global contexts, e.g. the relevance of global warming. Books are a sustainable way of helping a country develop and progress.
    18. The first steps We used all kinds of media to advertise our cause Too many English books at home? Some children would dream about it! Help children in Mongolia with your book donation. Visit www.bookbridge.info !
