  8. 8. Understand…. 1. your goals 2. identities + signals
  9. 9. (psst…it’s okay if your goals DON’T include social media)
  10. 10. But…Goals = Audience https://www.flickr.com/photos/tattoodjay/4129779298/
  11. 11. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tmesis/21126825/ Audiences = People The Internet also = People
  12. 12. Some are people you know...
  13. 13. And some are people you don't.
  14. 14. …some businesses connect by sharing products & expertise
  15. 15. some are wiser just to be sociable
  16. 16. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ooohoooh/1350774613/ Networks are ways of connecting

  18. 18. Identities + Signals
  19. 19. Networks are not about online/offline But there are differences.
  20. 20. Identity Online = Visibility
  21. 21. Signals Online = Reputation
  22. 22. Success = lather, rinse, repeat
  23. 23. But.
  24. 24. Social Media Broadcast Media http://ezasseenontv.com/tag/as-seen-on-tv-store/
  25. 25. Sometimes being social = you, signaling to the people who know you or might want to know you.
  26. 26. Sometimes other people signal on your behalf.
  27. 27. Sometimes, that’s not so ideal.
  28. 28. But being social in return = creativity points
  29. 29. http://www.flickr.com/photos/21031300@N02/4076687726/ ‘This call is being recorded” Identity online = Public. Always take the high road.
  30. 30. …& do a permanent PEI shoulder check
  31. 31. Identity online = control over your signals & (some of) what turns up on Google search
  32. 32. But that’s for the people who already know your name. What about those who don’t?
  33. 33. A visible online identity can sell for you, even in places YOU aren’t being social.
  34. 34. A friendly tweet
  35. 35. A blog
  36. 36. A sale.
  37. 37. And no one knew the artist.
  38. 38. Is it easy? No, it’s messy. It’s an extra hat (or three). All the time.
  39. 39. Don’t choose the one you think you should.
  40. 40. Choose the one where your business & your personality intersect, and commit.
  41. 41. •  Signal what you want to be known for •  Signal to the people you want to be known to
  42. 42. Be a person & a professional too
  43. 43. Be reciprocal & generous https://www.flickr.com/photos/ben_grey/4582294721/
  44. 44. Be a little different…but yourself. https://www.flickr.com/photos/pixeltree/4998949415
  45. 45. Celebrate your successes (and those of others) https://www.flickr.com/photos/maenoellefoto/2333965284
  46. 46. Surprise us.
  47. 47. The Internet is aspirational
