HOW IT ALL STARTED…. • Summer 2011 @ Stanford University – AI lab, idea by Andrew Ng and Peter Norvig • Three classes ready by September • Introduction to AI • Introduction to DB • Introduction to ML • January 2013 – two separate platforms Coursera and Udacity • Started a trend of MOOC (Massive online open courses)
COURSERA IN NUMBERS • Partner universities • 4 - January 2012 • 14 - July 2012 • 31 – September 2012 • 62 – February 2013 • Number of users – 2,729,013 (this morning ;) • Number of courses offered so far – 323 (in 21 categories) • Languages – mostly English, EPFL offers a few classes in French
WHAT COURSERA OFFERS? • Completely free, open, online • Duration – from 4 to 13 weeks • Workload – up to 10 hours a week • Videos, in video quizzes, homework quizzes, homework assignments (posted weekly) • Exam (term and/or midterm) • Additional resources offered • Forums • Chat sessions, where instructors answer questions sent by mail • Courses archived after done
WHAT DOES THE COMMUNITY OFFER? • Answers to questions on forums – always timely and accurate • Additional resources posted by fellow students • Fun / Relevant discussions on topic and off-topic • Study groups • geographical • Virtual (FB, G+, Goodreads are useful) • Meet-Ups
TIPS • Find a study group you can take part of • You can skip part of the assignments and finish the course • Keep on rolling, even if you miss a few deadlines • If all else fails, try to just keep up with the video lectures. • You can always use the archive, and/or enroll in the next offering • How many courses do I take at one time? • Depends on workload • 2-3 works best for me 

TIPS • Find a study group you can take part of • You can skip part of the assignments and finish the course • Keep on rolling, even if you miss a few deadlines • If all else fails, try to just keep up with the video lectures. • You can always use the archive, and/or enroll in the next offering • How many courses do I take at one time? • Depends on workload • 2-3 works best for me 
