    2. Be Careful Online
      • Don’t give out:
        • Address
        • Phone number
        • City
      • Give out only limited, non-identifying info
      • NEVER open .exe files
    3. Meeting People Online
      • Others may not be truthful
      • May have different agendas
      • People can lie and act badly
      • Time online does not equal trust or understanding
    4. Use Caution
      • Experienced Internet users can track others
      • Not just friends home pages
      • The Web is cached and archived
      • People download files
      • Assume posted could be assessable FOREVER!
    5. Protect Your Computer
      • ALWAYS use virus protection (i.e. PC-cillin, Norton, McCaffee)
      • Install Firewall
      • Select items online, call “800” if available
      • Don’t leave computer connected online when not used
    6. Social Networks
      • Examples: Myspace, Facebook
      • Millions of users
      • Free to join and surf
      • Some problems, dangerous people
      • Relatively few incidents
      • Take steps to reduce risks
    7. On Social Networks
      • Don’t talk to strangers
      • Don’t post provocative content (pictures, comments, blog entries)
      • Don’t identify yourself or give personal information, location, or schedule
      • When available, use network’s safety suggestions and build in safety features
      • THINK! Use good judgment, be responsible for actions
    8. Internet and Youth
      • Internet connects youths with world and many resources
      • Helps make friends, socialize, feel connected
      • Safety is key
    9. Kids Use Differently
      • Most adults/parents email, look up information, seek news
      • Kids chat, play games, share music & pictures, watch & share video, share files
    10. Knowledge vrs Wisdom
      • Learning technology is important
      • Understanding responsible behavior is important
      • Youth need to learn both online
    11. Watch the 4-C’s
      • Inappropriate:
        • Contexts
        • Content
        • Contacts
        • Commerce
    12. Internet Usage
      • At school
        • Filtered,
        • Supervised,
        • Monitored
      • Goal: Ensure youth are safe wherever they use the net
    13. Instant Messaging
      • 76% of teens IM
      • 44% of adults IM
      • 69% of teens use at least 5 times per week
      • 40% of adults use at least 5 times per week

    14. Stay Safe
      • Don’t giving out full name, other identifiers
      • Never get together with someone you meet online
      • Be careful posting pictures; don’t use ones that identify you
      • Use services with control over “friends” and visitors
      • Don’t post things that could embarrass
      • Check blogs & comment sections regularly, delete comments as needed
