  9. 9. 1.1 INTRODUCTION Do you like solving technical problems? Are you good at science and math? You might consider becoming an engineer. Engineers are problem solvers who use their expertise in science and math to do their job. The word engineer is derived from the Latin word “ingeniar” or “ingenium” which literally means to devise in the sense of construct or craftsmanship. Engineering is a branch of science and technology that deals with the designing of technology and feasibility of applications to the human kind in the easiest possible way. Engineering is an art and science to create wonders. Engineering is one of the oldest and preferred streams in our education system. This has been a favored career option among students after 10+2. Engineering offers students an opportunity to work in technical, scientific and mathematical areas in order to meet the growing demands of human needs in various fields as:  Aeronautical / Aerospace / Astronautical Engineering  Agricultural Engineering  Automobile Engineering  Biochemical Engineering  Biomedical Engineering  Bio-Technology Engineering  Computer Engineering  Civil Engineering  Chemical Engineering  Control Engineering  Industrial Production Engineering  Information Technology  Instrumentation Engineering  Electrical Engineering  Electronic Engineering  Electronics & Communication/Telecommunication Engineering  Electronics & Electrical Engineering  Environmental Engineering  Marine Engineering  Mechanical Engineering  Mechatonics Engineering  Mining Engineering  Nano-Technology  Nuclear Engineering  Ocean Engineering  Petroleoum Engineering  Textile EngineeringFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  10. 10. 1.2 SPECIALIZATION FIELDS & SCOPE – WHICH BRANCH SHOULD I CHOOSE? 1. AERONAUTICAL / AEROSPACE ENGINEERING Aerospace engineering is the primary branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction, and science of aircraft and spacecraft. It is divided into two major and overlapping branches: aeronautical engineering and astronautical engineering. The former deals with craft that stay within Earths atmosphere, and the latter with craft that operates outside it. Aerospace Engineering deals with the design, construction, and study of the science behind the forces and physical properties of aircraft, rockets, flying craft, and spacecraft. The field also covers their aerodynamic characteristics and behaviors, airfoil, control surfaces, lift, drag, and other properties. Aerospace engineering is not to be confused with the various other fields of engineering that go into designing elements of these complex craft. For example, the design of aircraft avionics, while certainly part of the system as a whole, would rather be considered electrical engineering, or perhaps computer engineering. Or an aircrafts landing gear system may be considered primarily the field of mechanical engineering. There is typically a combination of many disciplines that make up aerospace engineering. While aeronautical engineering was the original term, the broader "aerospace" has superseded it in usage, as flight technology advanced to include craft operating in outer space. Aerospace engineering, particularly the astronautics branch, is referred to colloquially as "rocket science". 2. AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING Agricultural engineering is the engineering discipline that applies engineering science and technology to agricultural production and processing. Agricultural Engineers apply engineering principles to all activities related to agriculture and horticulture. This basically implies looking after the mechanization of agricultural activities for the smooth functioning and efficient increase in food productivity. Agricultural engineers also specialize in other aspects like power system and machinery design; structures and environmental science; and food and bioprocess engineering. They discover the ways to conserve soil and water and to improve the processing of agriculturalFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  11. 11. products. Improvement in agricultural farm machinery, farm structures, rural electrification, bio-gas, new technologies in the design and manufacture of agricultural products and also conservation of soil and water are some of the jobs handled by an agricultural engineer. Career as an Agricultural Engineer: The career is interesting, challenging as well as rewarding. Agricultural graduates have many options in their hand. Apart from joining manufacturing industries they can also choose for water resource management, forestry, mining and rehabilitation, food processing, peri-urban and rural development, machine development and many more. Agricultural engineers can also work in manufacturers of agricultural equipment, Fertilizer and irrigation companies, Farming companies, as commissioned officers in the defense services, Research organizations and laboratories, as technical experts on engineering projects in banks and financial corporations, Industry service organizations such as the sugar industry and in different NGO etc. Jobs in mechanized farms, for rural electrification, and in agro-industrial corporations are also increasing. Agricultural engineers also work as assistant engineers, designers, management trainees, and technical officers in banks. Besides teaching and technical journalism, large numbers of these engineers are absorbed in Central and state governments departments of agriculture. 3. AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING Automobile engineering is one of the most challenging careers these days. Due to demand and passion on vehicles, automobile engineers have a lot of opportunities in India as well abroad. It is the study of engineering that deals with designing the vehicle, Manufacturing new products/ new vehicle, Repairing, servicing vehicles. Automobile engineer should be innovative and dedicated to their work. Engineering has many sub section like systems and soon. It involves studying motor systems, design, technology and many more. Automobile engineer can be a product design engineer, development engineer and manufacturing engineer. Manufacturing engineer designs the layout keeping in mind the safety products where as a product designer will design and test the systems of automobiles. Development engineers handle the delivery of the vehicles and also the customer satisfaction. The future engineers of the automobile can specialize in areas such as aerodynamics, fuels, chassis, electronics, emissions, ergonomics, manufacture, materials, creation of a fast prototype, security or management etc.FaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  12. 12. 4. BIO-CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Bio-chemical engineering is a branch of integrated knowledge of governing biological properties and principles and of chemical engineering methodology and strategy. It deals with the transformation of raw materials into the bio-products on which the modern society depends. A bio-chemical engineer is definitely not a person that thinks within the box, rather they are constantly looking to improve and redefine various aspects of the living world. A bio-chemical engineer may work on developing fermentation processes, animal cell culture, the production and preservation of foodstuffs, improving the efficiency of a particular drug or pharmaceutical process, or even helping find a cure for a disease like making ‘magic bullets’ that locate and kill cancerous tumours, natural fuels, get involved in sewage treatment, and developing and producing pharmaceuticals to reduce heart disease. Career as a Bio-Chemical Engineer:  Innovator- synthesizing the new products  Create brilliance in the existing technology and processes  Support and enable improvements in existing processes in homologous fields like bioinformatics, pharmacogenomics and drug discovery Typical work activities include:  Applying biological and biochemical principles to the mass production of new products;  Developing processes from pilot to plant to full-scale production so that the product can be manufactured in bulk, safely, economically and profitably  Designing, installing or constructing, and commissioning new production units, monitoring development and troubleshooting existing processes  Working with chemists and biologists to devise new products and processes  Monitoring production, quality control and checking the safety of existing productsFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  13. 13. 5. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING Biomedical engineering is the study of principles and applicants of engineering in the medical field. It is the combination of both medical and engineering to improve life quality. It plays an important role in therapy, rehabilitation and recovery. It is the combination of genetic engineering and mechanical-engineering, it helps in providing software which helps the technical systems to solve clinical issues. The students who are interested in bio medical engineering should have an interest in medical science, engineering and application of new technology to medicine. They provide devices which are useful in clinical requires and they can also have bright openings in management in hospitals and health care organizations. 6. BIO-TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring bio-products. Biotechnology also utilizes these products for manufacturing purpose. The concept encompasses a wide range (and history) of procedures for modifying living organisms according to human purposes that goes back to domestication of animals, cultivation of plants and "improvements" through breeding programs, employ artificial selection and hybridization. By comparison to biotechnology, bioengineering is generally thought of as a related field with its emphasis more on higher system approaches (not necessarily altering or using biological materials directly) for interfacing with and utilizing living things. Career as Biotech Engineer: Biotechnology reveals that Indian Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) will grow leaps. The growth of services sector will be over 8% and its contribution to India’s GDP will be over 51%. According to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), “India in the new knowledge economy” and the areas with significant potential include pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, legal support, intellectual property research design. A biotechnologist may find jobs in the following fields:  Drug and pharmaceutical research  Public funded laboratories  Chemicals  Environment control  Waste management  EnergyFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  14. 14.  Food processing & Bio-processing industries The government institutes and organisations, such as Department of Biotechnology (DBT), several Agriculture, dairy and horticulture institutes offer employment to Biotechnology professionals. In private sector, there are tremendous job openings for biotechnologists that have their own R&D units. 6. COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING In today’s world of rapid technological development one cannot deny the importance of Computers and also the concerned engineering discipline. Automation is the current trend in every field of work and this is the very fundamental question underlying computer science—“What can be efficiently automated?” Be it the commerce sector, the field of medicine, defense, communications, and aviation etc, the basic skeleton for carrying out any kind of work is provided by the computers and the softwares that run on them. Computer science (CS) spans the range from theory through programming to cutting-edge development of computing solutions. It offers a foundation that permits graduates to adapt to new technologies and new ideas. This field of engineering not only focuses on how computer systems themselves work, but also how they integrate into the larger picture. Functional Areas of a Computer Science Engineer: Here is a broad overview of different areas of computer science:  Software Systems  Hardware Systems  Scientific Computing Type of work involved: The work done by computer engineers consists of the preparation of a hardware platform and software to run on it that would meet the needs of the users of the system. Creation of any application involves the following:  analysing user requirements  researching, designing and writing new software programs  testing new programs and fault finding  evaluating the software and systems that make computers and hardware work  developing existing programs by analysing and identifying areas for modification  integrating existing software products and getting incompatible platforms to work together  investigating new technologies  creating technical specifications and test plansFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  15. 15.  working with computer coding languages  writing operational documentation with technical authors  maintaining systems by monitoring and correcting software defects  working closely with other staff, such as project managers, graphic artists, designers, developers, systems analysts, and sales and marketing professionals  consulting clients/colleagues concerning the maintenance and performance of software systems and asking questions to obtain information, clarify details and implement information  continually updating technical knowledge and skills by attending in-house and/or external courses, reading manuals and accessing new applications Major Core Companies: Microsoft, Google, IBM, Oracle, Infosys, Wipro, NetApp, and various other organizations like DEShaw, GoldmanSachs etc that hire for their IT sectors. Myth Busters: a) Do I need to know a lot of programming languages to join CSE? No. There are students who have never undertaken any course on programming when they join college and still perform well in this field. But you should be prepared to work hard and learn these languages as the need arises once you are here. One important pre requisite is that you must have a keen interest in writing programs and a problem solving aptitude b) Do I need to be good at maths for this branch? Again a NO. Mathematics is included in the first year (which is common for all) and in the second year of your bachelor degree in computer engineering but the kind of maths that you study for JEE has very little coherence with the kind you have to study in college. The life of a computer engineer is very easy and they are the ones who get higher salaries as compared to other streams. Believe in the above statement only at your own risk. It is a fact that software jobs are the most lucrative jobs because of the kind of packages offered but it comes with a price. Programmers really have to work hard in writing and debugging codes. Though it may not exert one physically but it does involve a lot of mental effort and patience.FaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  16. 16. 8. CIVIL ENGINEERING An engineer managing civil works are known to be civil engineers. They plan, design, sketch out and construct building, roads, canals, sewage systems and much more. Civil engineering needs high knowledge and analytical skills. There works begins with the planning and great approval from government, and then estimate the cost and start the construction. Civil engineers coordinate with other engineers. They perform team work and mostly work for the government projects. With the experience they may also directly go with specialization in the construction related projects like water resources, transportation and Infrastructure. Civil engineers can start their career as a supervisor and higher up till managerial position in a particular special field. They are the hot cakes for every construction business. Type of work involved: From Civil engineering’s perspective, any major construction work involves mainly four stages:  Surveying  Designing  Construction  Maintenance, Repair and Demolition Myths Busters: People are generally confused about the role of a civil engineer. They usually misunderstand them for architects. An architect designs an over view whereas a civil engineer figure out how to make the given structure stable. A problem that students face is that some closed minded people think it is related to mason work which is quite low standard and thus misguide the students, where as it is obviously far from the truth. Also, if someone tells you that civil engineering is losing its glamour then just tell him that people may live without computers and electricity but not without a roof over their head. Civil engineering is the basic need for the progress of any civilization. Also Civil Engineering is not only restricted to Engineering but also gives a feel of management approach as a person has to supervise the whole construction. 9. CHEMICAL ENGINEERING Chemical engineering is nothing but engineers dealing with chemistry applying in designing, constructing and operating the machines. Chemical engineers apply chemical technology in pharmaceutical industries, petroleum technology, refining industries and so on. Chemical engineers also involve in designing, production, operating the machinery in the industries. They play a major role in every industry. They are coordinated with other engineers to implement the plan.FaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  17. 17. They are also responsible for the quality control of the product, to remove chemicals in the waste materials and extract the by products for recycling them, to use biotechnology techniques and other nano technology in bio products. Also, chemical engineers are required for every industry, as the industries are growing in India these Engineers have got many options to choose from. 10. CONTROL ENGINEERING Control engineering or control systems engineering is the engineering discipline that applies control theory to design systems with desired behaviors. The practice uses sensors to measure the output performance of the device being controlled (often a vehicle) and those measurements can be used to give feedback to the input actuators that can make corrections toward desired performance. When a device is designed to perform without the need of human inputs for correction it is called automatic control (such as cruise control for regulating a cars speed). Multi-disciplinary in nature, control systems engineering activities focus on implementation of control systems mainly derived by mathematical modeling of systems of a diverse range. 11. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION & ENGINEERING Industrial / production Engineering is the field of engineering which concerns on planning, designing the operation system of the organization. Industrial and productive engineers work on installing the capability of men and materials in an effective setup for increasing the production of goods, improvement in the quality and quantity in the product. They aim on the customer satisfaction and measure the efforts of the industries. IP Engineers respond for the growth of industrial management, planning, controlling and designing the systems of all activities of the organization. Career Prospects: Industrial and production engineers find ample job opportunities in manufacturing companies. They can also be absorbed in several other organizations including banks, hospitals, finance, agriculture, public utilities, wholesale and retail trade, transportation, construction and government. Industrial Engineers can also work as plant engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, process engineers and industrial managers in different industries, management and service sector in the middle management cadre. Most of the opportunities are in the private sector. 12. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGYFaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!

Information technology (IT) is the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware. In short, IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit and retrieve information. Difference between Computer Science Engineering & Information Technology At the most basic level, Computer Science is a "Hard" Science, well grounded in what is now known in the field of Mathematics as Information Theory. Computer Science (as a field) is concerned with developing new ideas around the use and design of computing systems, and with the mathematical concepts of computation and information. Information Technology, on the other hand, is a practical Engineering discipline, concerned with implementing solutions to practical problems using current-day technology. 13. INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING Instrumentation Engineering is the engineering discipline, which will be examined as a separate branch or can be used with electronic engineering. The study focuses mainly on the development, configuration and automated systems. Instrumentation Engineers usually work in industries with automated processes, such as chemical or manufacturing plants with the aim of improving system performance, reliability, and stability. They are responsible for the planning, construction and maintenance of equipment and all measuring systems. Instrumentation Engineers also need to decide on the type of tools for better quality and efficiency of the final product. Therefore, they are used as major items in industrial production.FaaDoOEngineers.com - India’s BIGGEST Website for Engineers & Aspirants!
  19. 19. 14. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.
