Analysis+Of+Opening+Techniques Kill Bill

 1. 1. Analysis of Opening Film Techniques Employed in Kill Bill vol1 (2003)

Film TechniquesExamples of typical film techniques used and why– Illustrate your findings with references to actual onscreen moments. Titling – colour, font style, over image or black, timing, credits presentation etc The 4th film by Quentin Tarantino- shown to be an accomplished director. Titles down over black screen with a slither of light peeking through. Uma Thurman- all written in white over black- shown to be main actress in the film, first actress name shown.Camera Movement (panning, tracking, crane shot and crabbing etc)Tracking shot used to show a pair of legs walking what seems to be from one end of a hallway to another- identity of person remaining a mystery.Framing of Shot (CU, MLS, ELS etc)Close up, all we can see is the main actresses face in the beginning- her facial expressions and her state of mind.Another close up is used to show mans legs walking across one end of room to the other.Camera Angles (high and low angles etcThe level of framing seems to be quite low as we cannot make out all the characters as sometimes we only see their legs rather than their faces.Selection of mise-en-scène including colour, figure, pops, lighting, objects, location and setting;Costume- woman seems to be wearing a wedding dress covered in blood.Location- a mystery due to it just being close ups on the woman.Lighting- used to make screen appear black and white.Props- handkerchief which says “Bill” gives us insight to character. Editing directions(Match cuts, jump cut, reverse shots etc)No editing is used, the situation and the people in the mystery are to be kept a secret until later on in the movie- creates suspense this way.Sound techniques(diegetic, non diegetic, silence, dialogue Starts with sound of heavy breathing of woman, soon followed by dialogue from a man- “do you find me sadistic” Non diegetic music used from the moment credits start playing.Actor’s positioning and movementSeems to be positioned in the center of frame with hardly any movement occurring except for the actress’s face which is the only thing in the shot.
