Healing America's DNA: America is in Serious Trouble Due to its Sins.

America's economy is deeply damaged and its national security is in great danger.

God is behind all this!

He is trying to persuade America to return to Him so He can bless and protect us again as He has done since God God founded America thorough some very imperfect Christians over 400 years ago at Jamestown, Virginia.

"Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain" ( Psalm 127:1). Only God can make a nation prosperous. In the Old Testament, God was forces to judge Israel, the "apple of His eye" by allowing their economy and national security to be greatly weakened.

America's increasing pain has great purpose. If the American Church will allow that pain to drive them to repent for its current and past sins and the sins of America, God will do just what He did for Israel: forgive us and heal our land as II Chronicles 7:13-14 promises.

Only the American Church can turn God's judgement away from America. This book describes the roots of America's main sins in the sins of the Jamestown colony of 1607. The guilt from those sins still affects our nation. These foundational sins have also become the roots of America's main sins today.

As He did with Israel, Gos is looking for someone to "stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it" (Ezekiel 22:30). 2600 years ago, God found no one, so God destroyed His beloved Israel for awhile. God is again looking for someone to stand int he gap for another nation He dearly loves: the United States of America.

Healing America's DNA: America is in Serious Trouble Due to its Sins.

  1. 1. Dr. C. Peter Wagner Writes: "Those of us who pray for America know that when the sins of our forefathers are confessed and remitted, the doors of heaven over our land open even wider. Bob Fox has planned a huge strategic step in this direction for 2007, and Healing America’s DNA provides an amazingly vivid and insightful guidebook for this event and more. It is new information that every serious intercessor needs." C. Peter Wagner, Chancellor Wagner Leadership Institute Author of over 50 books _____________________________ “Healing America's DNA is one of the most important books of the decade for those of us who are interested in praying for God's blessings and revival to be poured out from heaven. It is an entirely biblical approach to identificational repentance, a well- attested biblical prayer pattern, that asks the Lord to forgive historic sins that otherwise give Satan ongoing authority to keep sowing increasingly darker forms of the same sin patterns in our country and culture. This book has been raised up by God for such a time as this, as we cry out for God to heal our land, to send revival, and to release a great move of the Holy Spirit on our universities, seminaries, and in our cities." Dr. Gary S. Greig The University Prayer Network Old Testament Scholar _________________________________ “Healing America's DNA by Bob Fox is an excellent treatise on healing the ‘birth defects’ of our nation as well as the American church. Every intercessor, beginner or mature, could benefit from the principles he outlines of the Tidewater events that helped shape the spiritual foundation of our country and continue to influence us to this day, for good or ill. I highly recommend it." Bob E. Lichty, Director YWAM Blessing Center Charles City, Va. 2303

  8. 8. 9 Revised Foreword to the 2007 Edition “Yo soy una voz que grita en el desierto. ‘Abran un camino derecho para el Senor…” (San Juan 1:23) “I am the voice of one crying in the desert. Make ready the way of the Lord!” (John 1:23)1 A Year of Destiny n 2007, the 400-year Anniversary of the First Landing of America’s first permanent British colony will occur here in the Tidewater region of Virginia. Besides being a time of national celebration and reflection, this anniversary could be a significant spiritual event for America. In the Bible, God has used the end of a 400-year period to signify a time of tremendous change—usually for the better. Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt after 400 years of slavery into the Promised Land—a fact that God actually told Abraham hundreds of years before it happened: "Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years” (Genesis 15:13 ; Acts 7:6). After the last book in the Old Testament was written [c. 460-430 BC], a 400-year period of prophetic silence started in which God did not speak any more scripture to the Jews.2 The end of that 400-year period was the coming of the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth! Foundations are everything! In a building, a company, a family or in a nation, the foundation determines much of what will happen in those groups for better or for worse. At our 400th anniversary, God wants America to not only rededicate itself to Him as a nation, but to examine the purity of its foundations and deal with the flaws that have been there from the beginning. This is exactly what Governor Nehemiah did around 490 BC when he led the rededication of the city of Jerusalem, after God has destroyed it some 80 years earlier for persistent, unrepentant sin. That dedication, lead by the 1 This verse is in Spanish to honor the six Jesuits killed on February 9, 1571 while honoring Jesus in worship. They were the first Christian martyrs in Virginia, trying to make ready the trail of the Lord in this new land. 2 Robert Jamieson, A. R. (Hebrews. 12:6). highest political leader of that region, included prolonged and detailed repentance for the sins of their forefathers in Jerusalem, Nehemiah knew that he had to build a new foundation under Jerusalem if it was going to prosper again under God. This is what God wants to do with America in our 400th year of our birth. There are two main reasons why this has to happen. Revival Is Coming! In 1994, God spoke to me very clearly that He was about to bring revival to Tidewater, Virginia, to America and to the world. No other revival in history could compare to what God was about to do. He wants His people— especially His pastors—to get ready to lead their people into the greatest spiritual harvest ever seen on earth. That revelation led me to resign from pastoring churches after 17 years so that I could alert pastors to what was coming and help them prepare “the way of the Lord” into our region for that revival. This book is an attempt to help the Church of Tidewater—and of America— to get ready for that great harvest of souls that God is preparing—and to respond to His current judgment! God’s Judgment on America is Here Around 1997, I met Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, at a meeting in St. Louis with 120 other evangelical leaders in America for three days of prayer for America. This meeting took place right after one of Dr. Bright’s annual 40- day fasts for America. In private, I asked him, “Dr. Bright, what is God saying to you about America?” Instantly, he replied, “Judgment!” Many Christian leaders agree that America and the American Church are both now under the increasing judgment of God. Bill Bright, Henry Blackaby, Pat Robertson, Mike Bickle and David Wilkerson have said as much in recent times. Years ago, even Billy Graham said that unless God judges America for its sins, He will have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah on Judgment Day! America is in great trouble with God. Our decadence as a nation and the sin and passivity of the American Church has kindled the wrath of God against us already. Because of His increasing judgment, God is gradually removing His sovereign protection on America and allowing the Devil to do what the Devil has always wanted to do: attack us and destroy God’s great plans for us as a nation and as a Church.
  10. 10. 11 You shall have no other gods before Me…for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me… (Exodus 20:3-5) Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people (Proverbs 14:34). Unprecedented diseases (AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases), unprecedented attacks by our enemies (the 9-11 attack), unprecedented storm damage (Hurricanes Katrina and Rita), and multiple, simultaneous wars (War on Terrorism plus wars in Iraq and in Afghanistan) are quickly draining the strength, hope and finances of America. God is behind all that! He’s allowing it. “FOR THOSE WHOM THE LORD LOVES HE DISCIPLINES, AND HE SCOURGES EVERY SON WHOM HE RECEIVES." (Heb. 12:6). It’s part of His Father’s love when He disciplines us as His children. God wants to show America that we are not safe without His blessing and protection. God also knows that He can never get America’s attention—or the Church’s full attention—until He touches the apple of their eye: finances. God is doing that. He is allowing the great financial blessings He gave us for many generations to dwindle away. He doesn’t want to punish us but He has to in order to pull us back from our headlong plunge into total wickedness as a nation. This plunge that also drags down many other nations who imitate our increasingly decadent American media culture of TV, movies, internet and music we spread throughout the world daily— for money! America is polluting the planet at great profit with the devil’s gospel, preaching and celebrating sin in its many forms. He is also the God who rules the destinies of nations. “…Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain” (Ps 127:1). Only God can protect America from its enemies and from disaster. Unless God protects the United States, America’s national security, its economy and its people are at great risk no matter what we do to protect ourselves. In a very real way, this urgent call to repentance is a national security issue of the highest order! The American Church is Sinful The Church in America could do much to purify our culture—and some congregations and denominations do—but large portions of the American Church have gone the way of the world. One 2003 survey found that “47 percent of Christians admitted pornography is a serious problem at home. In addition, 37 percent of pastors have viewed internet porn, according to a

Snubbing 3000 years of Judeo-Christian teaching and doctrine, four major denominations are endorsing homosexuality as a viable Christian lifestyle! On August 6, 2003, the Episcopal Church elected a practicing gay bishop and since July 4, 2005, the United Church of Christ has ordained gay clergy since 1972.5 The Presbyterian Church USA voted on May 10, 2011, to also allow the ordination of actively homosexual gay clergy.6 Fourthly, The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America decided on August 21, 2009 to accept noncelibate clergy into their pulpits. Other mainline denominations are considering similar actions. Most of these same protestant denominations have previously endorsed unlimited abortions- on-demand—even for partial-birth abortions with full-term babies! From 1950-2002, over 4,392 Catholic priests were accused of sexually abusing 10,617 children7 —behavior that lasted for decades with the criminal complicity of their bishops. Perhaps even more serious, many denominations and pastors still have not taken public stands against Freemasonry among their membersi Idolatry is easily the most serious sin in the Bible. The first Commandment says idolatry brings a curse from God on a person’s descendants! (Ex.20). God eventually destroyed Israel, the apple of His eye, for their affiliations with other gods. American Freemasonry, by definition, forces its 3 http://premium.faithsite.com/showmsg.asp?fid=5&tid=167923&sid=&style=2 (29 May 2006) 4 Few churches even offer practical training on how to filter the internet. 5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordination_of_LGBT_Christian_clergy (1-July 2012) 6 http://www.christianpost.com/news/presbyterian-church-usa-votes-to-allow- openly-gay-clergy-50176/ (1-July 2012) 7 http://www.usccb.org/nrb/johnjaystudy/exec.pdf is the definitive Catholic summary of findings on this commissioned by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. 2-3. How can a holy God continue to bless a Church that allows that? Beyond those serious patterns of sin among Christian leaders and their flocks, the American Church is often lukewarm, spiritually weak and “asleep at the wheel” while their city and nation—and many of its church members—descend into moral chaos. The American Church can be compared to a mighty Samson sleeping in the arms of deceitful Delilah as she cuts his holy hair, stripping him of his power. Our prosperity has lulled us to sleep and into the arms of the world’s sinful ways. The same thing happened to God’s people in the Promised Land about 3500 years ago. "So they ate, were filled and grew fat, and reveled in Your great goodness. But they became disobedient and rebelled against You…”9 Therefore, since God’s judgment is here and revival is coming, 2007 is a critical year to repent for the foundational sins of America. This book can help deal with the deepest roots of what may be hindering revival and contributing to the increasing judgment of God on a decadent America and a sinful, sickly America Church. God has to stop us—out of love for us! Judgment is the kindest thing He can do for a nation hell-bent on destroying the good and godly things He gave us in the last 400 years. It is a “severe mercy”, as the famous Christian author C. S. Lewis would say. God’s severe mercy of judgment on our nation is only to prepare America for His saving mercy of revival when they cry out to Him for help! Fruit Follows Root. “There was a prophecy given in America’s past, and it has echoed all over the country…As Virginia goes, so goes the Nation.”10 If Tidewater, Virginia is the Womb of America that God used to birth our nation and the American Church, then the spiritual DNA of Tidewater is a major part of the foundational spiritual DNA of both America and God’s Church in America, composed of all American Christians. If that is true, it also follows that many of the “birth defects” of America and its Church sprang from Tidewater’s flawed spiritual DNA. Even non-Christians recognize that “…our national character and core beliefs were forged in the Chesapeake 8 See www.mr-mason.com for more information on Freemasonry. This site is designed to help Masons purify Freemasonry, and it states the key biblical issues of polytheism inherent in Freemasonry. 9 Nehemiah 9:25-26 10 Dot Dalton, “The Spiritual History of Hampton Roads & Tidewater” published in the newsletter for Hampton Roads United Christians, March 1997.
  13. 13. 14 If My people… turn from their wicked ways…I will hear…and will heal their land (2 Chron. 7:14). This book calls the Church to repent for its sins and the foundational sins of our Virginia founding fathers in order to cancel the negative spiritual, emotional, physical and financial effects of those sins on America today. Bay region by our ancestors.” 11 In a word, the sins of Tidewater have become part of the sins of America. Tidewater is the root and America is the fruit that grew from that root. This book calls the American Church to recognize and repent for its current sins and the foundational sins of our Virginia founding fathers in order to cancel the negative spiritual, emotional, physical and financial effects of those sins, past and present, on America today Sin and its effects of sin do not automatically disappear with time. All sin must dealt with biblically in order to erase its consequences. Sin indelibly stains the soul of a person or nation---even after 400 years. The effects of these first sins by America’s founders are still hindering God’s Church throughout America and encouraging God’s growing judgment on our nation. The purpose of this book is to strongly encourage the Church in America to fully repent for its sins, which began in the foundational sins of the Jamestown colony of 1607. Doing so will help break the God-given penalties for those sins on America and release new blessings on our nation that will prepare us for revival. Chapter 18: Summary of Scan Results, is a brief overview of those sins which fall into five major categories: love of money, abuse of Native Americans, abuse of slaves, abuse of women and abuse of non-Anglican denominations. If the root (Tidewater) is healed, the fruit (America) will also be blessed. A spiritually awakened and cleansed American Church would be more qualified to help bring in the end-time harvest of souls in the revival to come! Massive global evangelization is, in fact, the vision God embedded in the “DNA” of the Virginia Colony in 1607—as we shall see in the first chapter entitled Pregnant With America. In a larger sense, this book gives Christians in any nation a theology and model for obeying II Chronicles 7:13-14: If I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people,[God’s judgment] and if My people who are called by My 11 http://www.chesapeakebay.net/info/noblest.cfm (13 March 2006)

As we will see later, Christians can confess the corporate sins of a region or of a nation, whether those sins are current or from the past and break the power of those sins! This is called identificational repentance, which happens when a person repents on behalf of others with whom they identify. Chapter Sixteen describes this in detail. This is what II Chronicles 7:13-14 is all about. Well-known author and pastor Dutch Sheets writes, “there is no more important issue facing the Church than…identificational confession and intercession. No issue will have greater impact on the coming harvest than this one.”12 Despite its spiritual importance, this can be a difficult book to read. Some will say this analysis is too negative, too blunt, especially in relation to America’s founders and about people who claimed to be followers of Jesus. In a time when we are celebrating our nation’s beginnings, it may seem politically incorrect to address any of the mistakes made during that founding. I totally agree with those leaders who want to reassure the public again that America was solidly built on Christian foundations. However, at first, those leaders could be initially offended by what they read here since it focuses on the sins of those settlers, thus appearing to damage their claims for the Christian foundation of America. I assume both are true. All who originally came here claimed to be Christians, and many probably were, but their behavior fell far short of biblical standards for Christians—as still happens today in Christian endeavors all over the world. The Bible, however, is notoriously frank about people—even its heroes: Adam, Moses, David, Solomon, Paul, Peter—all were great believers whose sins were exposed by God for the entire world to see. God deals with what is…not with what we wish it were. He is never concerned with being politically correct. The Bible and Christian church history are full of examples of men and women God used who had obvious flaws and persistent struggles with certain sins. 12 Jim Goll, Father Forgive Us!, Intercessory Focus on Yesterday’s Sins, ( Destiny Image Publishers, 1999),xiv.
  15. 15. 16 Faithful are the wounds of a friend. (Proverbs. 27:6). Martin Luther, the great doctrinal reformer of the Protestant Reformation is a vivid example. What a theological pioneer and seminal biblical thinker! Yet, he was very anti-Semitic! He wrote, “. . .In truth, the Jews, being foreigners, should possess nothing, and what they do possess should be ours.” 13 Another German named Hitler would later use Luther’s quotes to his advantage in his crazed persecution of the Jewish people. A great Christian’s sin of anti-Semitism infected Germany hundreds of years later partly because Luther’s church nor nation never repented of and renounced his sins against the Jews. Therefore, sin, in all of its subtle and historic hues, must be exposed if it is to die in our culture. Deep regional or national restoration requires acute honesty. Like surgery, it can be painful. In medicine and in theology, honesty is crucial. People can die if the doctor avoids dealing with a known sickness—however unpopular that knowledge may be to the patient. “Faithful are the wounds of a friend” (Proverbs. 27:6). Some of the things I have written about the early history of Native Americans and Anglicans in Tidewater may not be pleasant to read. Nevertheless, I see myself as a friend of our dear Native Americans—to whom all other Americans owe so much. I also admire and love many Episcopalians in our region who represent the Anglican Communion of churches worldwide. I have even served on the staff of two Episcopal churches in Tidewater. Sadly, as a denomination, the American Episcopal Church is now quite heretical in its teachings on homosexuality as noted earlier, but there is a godly remnant of Episcopalians who have a large role to play in restoring America’s spiritual DNA. Here is one dramatic example of “identificational repentance” involving a godly Episcopal priest in Tidewater. God used this event and others like it to show me how important it was to write this book. Around 1996, I attended a service at a non-denominational church called New Life Christian Center in the Oceanview section of Norfolk, Virginia. My good friend, Ken Gerry, the host pastor, had invited a mutual friend to preach that night. What was unusual was that he had invited an Episcopal priest, Marty O’Rourke, to preach! Normally, mainline Episcopalians are not invited to preach in non-denominational churches but Marty and Ken had become close friends recently. 13 http://www.flholocaustmuseum.org/history_wing/antisemitism/reformation.cfm (29 May 2006)
  16. 16. 17 Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. (Isaiah 55:6) Knowing of the severe Anglican persecution of non-Anglicans in colonial Tidewater, I leaned over to Marty and suggested that he publicly apologize to Ken on behalf of the Anglicans who had persecuted churches like Ken’s in the past. Episcopalians are the direct spiritual descendants of the Anglican Church in America. I felt that God would be honored by such an apology. I was not aware of any Episcopal priest having done anything like this in Virginia up to that point. Despite some initial reluctance to do something not planned for the service, they agreed to do it. Standing face to face in front of the congregation, Marty began to say that he wanted to make an apology to Ken’s church on behalf of the Anglican Church. Without any warning or expectation on our part, the power of God came down upon both of them, knocking them both to the floor! After a moment of shock, they both sheepishly got off the floor and finished the apology. Ken extended forgiveness to the Anglican Church on behalf of the non-Anglican denominations who had been persecuted by Anglicans. That response is obviously quite unusual, but then, so was the apology. It may have never happened in Virginia before. I think God was trying to say how pleased He was with that apology by bringing both leaders to their faces before Him. God showed His powerful pleasure like that when Solomon was dedicating the temple. The priests there also ended up on their faces as God’s glory cloud entered the temple. “…the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the house of the LORD” (1Kings 8:11). I firmly believe that more apologies from Anglicans and Episcopalians for the sins of their denomination in colonial times will lead to more unusual releases of God’s powerful presence and blessings upon Tidewater and upon America! Chapter 17 outlines a sample Tidewater repentance service in which many of the issues discussed in this book could be biblically addressed. Any city in America could also hold a similar service to affirm their own repentance of these foundational sins that still affect America. 2007 is the last chance we have to do this before much greater judgment comes upon us. God is saying that “Time’s up!” God does not want to judge America severely. He looking for someone to “stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it” (Ezekiel 22:30). 2600 years ago, God found no one to repent for Israel and so God destroyed Israel, “the apple of His eye”. God
  17. 17. 18 is again looking to His people to stand in the gap for the sins of a nation He greatly loves so that He can show mercy in the midst of judgment. 2007 is the year for the American Church to answer God’s call to repentance for the land. Ultimately, this book is a call to all denominations in the entire American Church to prepare the way of the Lord for massive national and international revival! Revival will come—whether we are ready or not. Healing the original DNA of Tidewater and America through repentance is a foundational step God is now calling His Church to take to maximize the fruit of His imminent global revival ! May each American Christian earnestly seek now to prepare the Lord’s way into the nation that was birthed here in Tidewater, Virginia—the Womb of America! May God give America great grace to do that as we celebrate our 400th Anniversary in 2007! 2012 Update As we all know, the American Church did not repent much prior to 2007. We all also know that the bottom fell out of the US stock market in the Fall of 2008. America has not recovered from that and it will not until God sees sufficient repentance by His people for their sins and the sins of the nation. In a word, God is behind America’s current economic and security problems. He has pulled back more of His blessings and is allowing us to fail more and more. This is how He treated Israel 2500 years ago in order to bring Israel back to Him. Their economy suffered and they were more vulnerable to their enemies. Only God can make a nation prosperous and safe (Ps. 127:1). He is doing the same thing now to bring America back to Him. Once the pain in America grows deep enough, His people will cry out in humble repentance to God and He will heal our land (II Chron 7:13-14) and bring a great revival that will sweep many in to the Kingdom. I hope this message encourages you in the difficult days ahead. America’s pain has great purpose! I hope this book helps pastors and churches to prepare for a season of deep humbling before God. Only God can save America and He is waiting on His Church to do its part so He will do His part. May God bless America again when America blesses God, Pastor Bob Fox July 1, 2012
  18. 18. 19 Chapter One Pregnant with America! [The following account is a historical reconstruction from the sparse details known about the Jamestown colonists’ first landing on the shores of Virginia. Since many of the details of the First Landing were not actually recorded in any document we now have, some of the details in this reconstruction are suggested by the facts that are known from other historical documents of that era.14 ] fter four months thrashing through the thick waves of the stormy Atlantic, three small, battered English ships gratefully dropped anchor on Sunday15 , April 26, 1607, a few hundred yards off a glistening white beach in a new, mysterious world at the mouth of what the local Indians called “great shellfish bay” — “Chesepioc” in their language. 16 Rising sharply above the foamy surf-soaked sand, 50-foot sand dunes, topped with short scrub pines and heavy brush, gleamed in the morning sun. To the 145 weary, home-sick British men aboard the Godspeed, the Susan Constant and the Discovery, the creamy-white dunes may have looked like dwarf versions of England’s white cliffs of Dover. “Land—at last!” they whispered to each other. Eagerly, like birds about to be released from a cage, Christopher Newport, Admiral of the fleet, Edward Maria Wingfield, future president of the colony’s council, Bartholomew Gosnold, a member of the council, and about 30 others, ventured ashore. Most of the men flung themselves overboard into the small boats, excited to see what lay beyond the tall dunes. “Today, we’ll celebrate! We made it!” they shouted. For most, dreams of gold, glory and adventure filled their journey-weary minds. Their varied dreams reflected the collage of motives in the 1606 14 The 1559 Anglican Book of Prayer was used by the first settlers for many decades in Virginia. 15 http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html?year=1607&country=1 (17 May 2006) 16 http://www.chesapeakebay.net/info/noblest.cfm (17 May 2006) A
  19. 19. 20 Charter King James had given them just a year before. They came for God and gold, ministry and money, evangelism and economics. King James had the spiritual authority to initiate all those goals. At that time, he was King of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the Head of the Church of England. But this blend of often-opposing motives would prove hard to balance in the days and centuries ahead. The 1606 charter to the Virginia Company, which sent the three ships, dictated a spiritual as well as an economic and government mission. However, that mission was not to start on April 26th . Trouble was already brewing. This day would not end well. During the scouting trip ashore with about 30 sailors, a few Chesapeake Indians attacked with bows and arrows, leaving two colonists wounded. Just when the weary seafarers thought that they had finally reached safety and refreshment, an unprovoked attack speckled the soft white sands of Virginia with drops of English blood. The violence, discouragement and anger of that first day in America would be a picture of what the colony would consistently endure in the years to follow. With this attack, tempers flared even more among the exhausted travelers. The colonists’ nerves were already raw from months of living in cramped, dark cargo spaces beneath the incessant pounding of cold, heavy waves. Reverend Robert Hunt, the sole clergyman aboard the three ships, and Capt. Newport agreed that the men were not ready to worship God and dedicate the land to the Lord Jesus Christ as they had planned. As the fleet’s chaplain, Pastor Hunt called for three days of prayer and fasting to help the men calm down and cleanse their hearts. Rev. Hunt encouraged everyone to repent from any anger and dissension in their hearts and to be reconciled to one another.17 He knew from the scriptures that God specifically commands that His followers must get right with one another before coming to worship and prayer (Matt.5:23-24). Finally, on Wednesday18 morning of April 29, purified by prayer, several small boats splashed ashore again through the cold surf for the second landing on what they now called Cape Henry, named after the king’s son, the Prince of Wales. With them was a large wooden cross, constructed from a spare mast. Wearing the robe of an Anglican bishop in a representative 17 M.J. Raeburn, America’s Dedication to God Series, Booklet One: Richard Hakluyt’s Contribution, (His Story Seminars INC, Virginia Beach, 1994), 3-4 As mentioned earlier, the actual role of Chaplain Hunt here is conjecture based on his known character, Anglican spiritual practices and Hunt’s ministry to the colonists in Jamestown. 18 http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/index.html?year=1607&country=1 (17 May 2006)
  20. 20. 21 fashion, Parson Hunt led the men in the planting of the cross and in dedicating the new land they now stood on. Under the glare of a cloudless azure sky, with seagulls skirling overhead, and with a dozen heads bowed around him, Pastor Hunt began to pray. He offered prayers of thanksgiving for the safe voyage and prayers of blessing for the new colony that they were about to establish for God and king. Taking out his well-worn Anglican Prayer Book of 1559, Rev. Hunt began to read the scriptures for Morning Prayer for April 29: Psalm 29, II Kings 11 and Acts 26; these were the same scriptures that Anglicans all over England had prayed that day. He could almost hear the voice of his dear friend, Rev. Richard Hakluyt, the great visionary for this colony, who had read and prayed these same bible verses only hours before in London. As he read Acts 26: 17-18, he suddenly felt the overwhelming Presence of the One Whose book he was now reading. The words seemed to leap off the page where Paul described how God directed him to “the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.” Finally, choking with emotion, he raised his eyes and his trembling hands to heaven and prayed “from these shores the Gospel shall go forth to not only this New World, but also to the entire world.”19 In doing so, Rev. Hunt prayed the only prayer that Jesus ever asked his followers to pray for others: that God would send Christians into His harvest all over the world. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field.” The air was suddenly unusually still. The gulls now glided silently in a tight arc above the motionless clump of men around the tall weather-beaten cross. The surf behind them pounded out the same rhythmic beat on the soggy sand. It seemed that nothing discernible changed. But high above the earth, where men cannot see or hear, I think that, all heaven broke out in thunderous applause as the Son of God stood up and shouted a victory shout that reverberated throughout the heavens and shook the gates of hell. “Victory for Jesus!” the heavenly hosts sang at the top of their lungs. “Victory for the Lamb!”the 24 elders shouted as they fell before Him. 19 Ibid.,
  21. 21. 22 “Victory for His Kingdom!”the cloud of witnesses repeated. Never before in the history of the world had a nation been born like this! Never before had God been glorified in this way by the first settlers of a land as they entered it. For a moment in time, Christian men stood before God with pure hearts to glorify Him in the founding of a new nation that would take the Gospel to this land and every land for which Jesus died. This First Landing was a first on earth…and in heaven. The dream of the Rev. Richard Hakluyt was coming true. Like Christopher Columbus before him,ii Rev. Hakluyt felt that the Lord had given him a vision to help found a colony in the New World to complete the Christian evangelization of the entire world that Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18- 20. Today, Christians call this the “Great Commission”. Hakluyt foresaw a Christian community here in America that would raise its children to become missionaries for the Gospel to the Native Americans here and to the peoples of every nation. Among the founders of the Virginia Company that sent these three ships, Hakluyt is one of only eight men named in the king’s charter to oversee the establishment of the first Virginia colony in the area of the Chesapeake Bay. Part of his evangelical goals were included in the king’s charter dated April 10, 1606. According to the charter, one of the purposes of the colony was to further “…so noble a Work, which may, by the Providence of Almighty God, hereafter tend to the Glory of his Divine Majesty, in propagating of Christian Religion to such People, as yet live in Darkness and miserable Ignorance of the true Knowledge and Worship of God, and may in time bring the Infidels and Savages, living in those parts, to human civility and to a settled and quiet Government.”20 Hakluyt made sure that the charter explicitly stated the evangelistic goals of the colony—to win the lost in the New World. Being a close friend of Hakluyt, Rev. Hunt’s prayer must have echoed Hakluyt’s passion for national and international evangelism to flow from this very area and from this new land just as Puritan leader John Winthrop would later preach in the northern half of the Virginia colony in Massachusetts.21 20 The Virginia Charter of 1606, in W. W. Hening, “The Statutes of Virginia,” 1619- 1792 (Richmond, VA, 1809-1823), vol. 1, pp. 57-66; http://www.yale.edu/lawweb/avalon/states/va01.htm (Yale Law School Avalon Project Web-page version). This charter is still part of the legal statutes of Virginia! 21 John Winthrop, Puritan leader in the Massachusetts Colony echoed Hakluyt’s vision of America with his image of America as a city on a hill, taken from
  22. 22. 23 So, April 29th was a day of conception. The seed of God’s word, purposes and presence was planted at the entrance to the womb: the Chesapeake Bay area, later called Tidewater. In the next few days, that seed would tack its way up the James River—a tributary of the bay—to lodge itself in the flat, marshy lowlands of what is now Jamestown, Virginia: the first permanent Protestant Christian settlement in America. The land was now pregnant with the Kingdom of God! The spiritual DNA of America was born. America, began to take form in Southeastern Virginia. The union of God’s Kingdom and this land was finally accomplished after other earlier attempts—both British and Spanish—had failed. Jamestown gave birth to the first Protestant, American Church and to much of American government. The 2006 Virginia General Assembly even calls the 1606 Charter that founded Jamestown and Plymouth, the “birth certificate of American Civilization.”22 Ultimately, this Tidewater “pregnancy” gave birth to one of the most unique creations of God on earth, the United States of America. In the chapters to follow, we shall examine some of God’s purposes in birthing this great nation called The United States of America and the American Church. We will also look at some of the “birth defects” in our spiritual DNA that we have inherited from this first permanent English colony. These “spiritual DNA defects” need to identified and dealt with so that God’s full purposes in giving birth to The United States of America and its Church can come to pass. What exactly is “spiritual DNA” and how does it affect a region or nation? Let’s look at this concept and examine how America has been shaped by the “spiritual DNA” that was first planted in the “Womb of America” by the Virginia Company in 1607. What we learn here may help set Tidewater and America free to yet fulfill its full destiny in the Lord! Matthew 5:14. “From Winthrop and the Puritans, America inherited the idea that in some way this land was to be an example and beacon of light to the rest of the world” See http://chi.gospelcom.net/GLIMPSEF/Glimpses/glmps022.shtml ( 28 October 2006) 22 On March 2, 2006, the entire Virginia General Assembly declared that they “hereby commend the 400th Anniversary celebration of the 1606 First Virginia Charter, which may be thought of as the birth certificate of American Civilization…” as seen in http://www.firstcolledge.us/ ( 3 April 2006).

  24. 24. 25 Chapter Two Spiritual DNA “…for I am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and fourth generations…” (Exodus 20:5). We Cracked the Code! 23 The Amazing Parallels of Discovery in Science and Christianity In the last decade of the Twentieth Century, after years of difficult research, scientists finally mapped the billions of DNA codes in the human genome. Mapping someone’s DNA means that scientists could describe the exact sequence of genetic components that makes each person genetically unique. Without a doubt, this is one of the most stunning scientific feats in all of human history! The possibilities this knowledge unleashes are truly mind-boggling in scope—and in morality. The door is now open to change the internal physical, mental, and even emotional structure of what makes people who they are. This breakthrough could bring us cures for genetic diseases that horribly afflict millions. This unprecedented discovery could also open a frightening kaleidoscope of genetic tinkering: cloning human beings for commercial purposes too hideous to even imagine. Understanding human DNA allows mankind to “play God” and change man, for better or for worse. Finding Family Roots through DNA Today, many DNA researchers believe that it is even possible to trace the origin of many African-Americans to about 90 African tribes living in West African countries such as Senegal, Mali and Nigeria—places from which many of America’s slaves originated! This new finding has launched a new industry to help African-Americans find their roots in Africa.24 In fact, Ophra Winfrey and other Black celebrities have recently been DNA tested to find their roots in Africa. Perhaps this alleged DNA connection will motivate more African-Americans to take responsibility for the healing and restoration of their ancestral African nations. Africa, certainly could use such help! 23 DNA picture from http://www.nsls.info/genome/ ( 5 March 2004) 24 http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,59850,00.html?tw=wn_story_related (3 June 2006)
  25. 25. 26 …knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers… (1 Peter 1:18). Mitochondrial DNA is a special type of DNA in every human cell. Unlike regular DNA, which is a combination of genetic information from the mother and father, Mitochondrial DNA is passed unchanged from mother to child. Therefore, that unchanging Mitochondrial DNA data can help link someone now to a tribe and a nation where his or her great-great-great-grandmother came from! In this way, DNA may help show people who they are and even why they are who they are, when they understand who their ancestors were. Even the movies have used this concept. Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars movie series is depicted with huge quantities of this type of Mitochondrial DNA element, thus linking him to a “super race” of people! “Spiritual DNA” acts in similar ways. It can give us clues to our ancestors, clues to why we act the why we do and why our lives play out like they do. What Is Spiritual DNA? These amazing scientific breakthroughs into physical DNA are now paralleled by similar new insights in the Church: that people also have what I call “Spiritual DNA”! This is a new concept for most Christians, but one which is firmly rooted in the Bible. While the Bible obviously does not use the same medical terms as I do here, it does teach the essence of what I am about to describe. We must see that there are invisible, powerful, spiritual connections between us and our forefathers—family and non-family ancestors to whom we are connected. We must better understand the formation of our spiritual DNA so that we can properly and thoroughly correct the damaged parts, and build on the good parts. So, don’t let the medical terms throw you off. This is biblical stuff! This is true! This is reality! In a sense, we have always known that every person receives “spiritual DNA” from their family. “Like father, like son”; “He’s a chip off the old block”; and “ The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” are just three common ways we express the truth that parents pass some of their character, personality, as well as their physical attributes to their children. Spiritual DNA in a person is equivalent to their spiritual makeup and character. King David’s spiritual DNA included a zealous “heart after God” and deep intimacy with God. How else could he have written so many biblical prayers, especially Psalm 23? His spiritual DNA also included great faith in God even in the face of personal danger. How else could he have
  26. 26. 27 slain Goliath and been so valiant in other battles? However, David’s spiritual DNA also included a major weakness as we shall see in a moment—a weakness that greatly damaged his whole family and the entire nation of Israel. Who we are as individuals always affects others for better or worse, even down through the generations of our family and the generations of other groups connected to us. The “spiritual DNA” of our ancestors can be one of the major determinants of why we act the way we do and blessings and struggles we encounter in life. The older I get, the more I see how similar I am to my father emotionally and spiritually—even though I was not raised by him or even around him for most of my growing years. His military career and my parents’ divorce unfortunately kept us apart. I saw him only a couple of times a year for 10 years, yet our emotions, our gift for languages, our love for words and writing, and our spiritual gifts are similar, although expressed in different forms. Amazingly, I turned out a lot like my dad—for which I am very grateful: he is a great man in my eyes and, I believe, in God’s eyes. Today, we have a wonderfully close relationship and I thank God that his spiritual and physical DNA shaped me although he was unable to raise me personally. His strengths are mine and his weaknesses are mine. 25 Even early Virginia settlers knew of these intergenerational connections: Individuals in Virginia were stereotyped by traits that were thought to be hereditary in their extended families. Anglican Clergyman Jonathon Boucher (1738-1804) believed that 'family character, both of body and mind, may be traced thro’ many generations; as for instance, every Fitzhugh has bad eyes; every Thorton hears badly; Winslow’s and Lees talk well; Carters are proud and imperious; and Taliaferro's mean and avaricious; and Fowkeses cruel.’ Virginians often pronounced these judgments on one another. The result was a set of family reputations which then acquired the social status of self-fulfilling prophecies.26 Note that character traits were passed down as well as physical traits. 25 By the way, if you want to know what kind of wife or husband someone will make? Get to know their parents! My years of counseling couples has proven that true many times. 26 David Hackett Fisher, Albion’s Seed, (Oxford University Press, 1989) 275 quoting Jonathon Boucher, ed., Reminiscences of an America Loyalist ( Boston, 1925), 61.
  27. 27. 28 Spiritual DNA & Corporate Identities In the Bible, God sees people primarily as individuals, then as families, churches, cities and nations. Amazingly, each level of human existence— individual, family, church, city and nation—stands before God with its own identity, spiritual gifts, sins, bondages, guilt and callings! In the Bible, each of these corporate entities has a real identity before God and each has a spiritual makeup just as an individual does. The corporate spiritual identity of a region or group is a powerful new understanding in the Body of Christ.iii Also in the Bible, God blesses some groups and penalizes other groups because of their behavior---or their ancestors behavior. Being a part of these groups gives individuals a group identity, in addition to their individual identity before God. We each have a personal identity and, normally, many group identities. I call the group identities corporate identities—who we are corporately. Besides the spiritual DNA we get from our family tree, the Bible clearly shows that our non-family corporate identities can greatly influence how God treats us due to the good and bad qualities associated with those groups. Truly, no man can be an island in God’s sight. God actually pays close attention to what groups we belong to and to what groups our ancestors belonged. The corporate identities our families and we have can carry blessings and curses into our lives that form part of our spiritual DNA. For example, my father’s personal identity is the man Bob Fox. His corporate identities include: Army soldier, veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Army Security Agency member, US Postal worker, and resident of Rappahannock County, with Irish and Hungarian roots. For the most part, these groups seem to have been godly and righteous. As such, they received many blessings for God for that righteous behavior. Those group connections have generally blessed my dad and allowed him to be a blessing to many people worldwide. I share in those God-given blessings as his son. The blessings from my father’s corporate identities form part of my spiritual DNA. I share in his blessings since I am his son. Now, let’s imagine that my dad had been a German soldier in WWII. He would have been a Nazi—a persecutor of Jews. He would have been supporting the dark dreams of an occult-driven madman named Adolf Hitler. He may have worked in the concentration camps that killed millions of Jews. He might have belonged to a Lutheran church in Germany that preached that Hitler’s way was God’s way, as some churches there unfortunately did. These group identities would not have brought blessing on my dad. In fact, there would normally be God-given penalties on anyone
  28. 28. 29 who was part of such evil groups. I believe the Bible calls such penalties, curses. The children of such people often inherit the effects of such curses. Those negative effects form part of their spiritual DNA. What such people need to know is that through Jesus, those curses can be broken! Chapters 16 and 17 explain how this can be done. Biblical Examples of Corporate Spiritual Identity National Corporate Spiritual Identity: Most Christians and Jews would agree that Jews often enjoy a higher level of personal and corporate blessings mainly because of their national corporate spiritual identity as the nation of Israel, God’s original chosen people. This national corporate spiritual identity is rooted in the covenant God made with the founding fathers of Israel at least 4000 years ago: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses: “He will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he swore unto them” (Deut. 4:31). The Old Testament describes this covenant. That covenant gave them great favor with God even when many generations violated God’s laws, simply because they had that corporate identity as Jews! Corporate Regional and City Spiritual Identity: All the people in the seven city-churches in the Book of Revelation (Rev. 1- 3) were commended or corrected by Jesus according to their corporate identity as cities, even though each person in each city may not have individually deserved that specific commendation or correction. Similar judgments were promised by Jesus on entire Jewish cities who had seen his miracles but still not believed (Matthew 11:20-24). "And you, Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will descend to Hades; for if the miracles had occurred in Sodom which occurred in you, it would have remained to this day.” (Matthew 11:23). Blessings or curses can come upon individuals just by being associated with certain groups or regions! These are profound biblical truths Not only do I personally have spiritual issues to deal with before God, but so does my family, my church, my city, and my nation! Each of those entities has a corporate identity in God’s eyes that makes it accountable to God as a group! More amazingly, the past or present spiritual issues of my family, church, city, region and nation can affect me for better or for worse now! Because each of our corporate identities has its own set of blessings, sinful propensities, bondages, gifts, callings and guilt, I may be more blessed or
  29. 29. 30 For just as through the disobedience of the one man, the many were made sinners (Rom. 5:19). less blessed in some ways due to the corporate identity of my family or city—even though I did not personally do the good or evil thing generating the blessing or penalty in that group! Therefore, my individual spiritual DNA is created by what I do with my life as well as what others have done with their lives who are connected either to me or my family, now or in the past. My sins, my blessings and my spiritual weaknesses and bondages can be conditioned and instigated by the spiritual inheritances I get from those I am corporately connected with, both past and present! If all this is beginning to make sense, then you can better understand why it is important for Tidewater or any region to deal with the sins of its ancestors. The effects and power of sin do not just go away. Someone has to confess and repent of sin in order to break its evil effects on the spiritual DNA of others. Spiritual DNA in the Bible Since Spiritual DNA and its effects are new concepts to most people, we will now explore them in some detail from the Bible. You may be surprised by what you are about to read. Original Sin The most profound example of a negative spiritual inheritance is what some theologians call Original Sin—the tendency all humans are born with that causes them to sin. Original sin comes from Adam, our first ancestor. Romans 5:12-21 spells this out: Therefore, just as sin entered the world though one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned…For just as through the disobedience of the one man, the many were made sinners (vs. 12,19). Clearly, all people inherited the propensity to sin from Adam, the “one man” mentioned above. This is our most basic, negative spiritual DNA as human beings. Adam’s sin even carried with it curses from God that all humanity has inherited from Adam: Men would have to earn a living “by the sweat of [their] brow” instead of living in a fertile garden with abundant, readily available food resources (Gen.3:19).
  30. 30. 31 “Cursed is the ground because of you.” The ground itself would be difficult to cultivate at times (Gen. 3:17-18). Adam would physically die (Gen 3:19b). This is the most obvious universal effect of Original Sin that all humankind has inherited. Eve’s part in the Original Sin caused all women to birth children with great pain (Gen.3:16). Generational Sins & Generational Guilt & Generational Curses There are three potential effects of our spiritual DNA inheritance. Understanding these three effects is crucial to grasping the significance of spiritual DNA. Generational Sins “We have sinned even as our fathers did” (Psalm 106:6). Generational sins are sins that seem to be repeated from one generation to the next within an individual, family, group, region or nation. For example, the sin of alcohol abuse run strongly on one side of my family tree. This is a part of my family’s spiritual DNA. Acts of violent vengeance and verbal feuds among Scottish-born settlers in colonial Appalachian America were probably much more pronounced than in other places in America. Similar feuds among their Scottish clans’s ancestors in Scotland were legendary…and very sad. Sexual promiscuity is very common among certain inner-city populations in America who are descendants of very promiscuous cultures in other nations. For generations, the Church in India has a persistent problem misappropriating money. 27 These are examples of sins that roll down from one generation to another affecting the spiritual makeup of many individuals and some sub-groups within the larger group. We inherit both good and bad spiritual traits from our ancestors: propensities to sin as they did, as well as propensities to do good. The sins of past generations create a propensity in their descendants to sin in the same ways individually and corporately. This is a negative spiritual inheritance acting much as a curse would: it tends to reproduce that sin and 27 Told to the author by two prominent Christian leaders in India.
  31. 31. 32 its negative results in each generation so it perpetuates itself. This is what the New Testament means when it refers to the influence of our ancestors on the present generation: “…knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers…” (1 Peter 1:18). This echoes passages such as II Kings 17:14, 22-23: “However, they did not listen, but stiffened their neck like their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God.” The Generational Sin of Deception in Abraham’s Family Spiritual DNA Abraham lied about his wife twice. He feared that men would kill him to steal his beautiful wife, Sarai, so he denied that she was his wife and said that she was his sister (Gen 12:13, 20:2). It was a half-truth. Sarai was his sister by another mother, but with the same father. Issac told the same lie about his wife, Rebecca years later. Ironically, he told the same King Abimelech the same lie that his father Abraham had told Abimelech (Gen.26:7-8). This sin of lying shows up in a more magnified way in his grandson, Jacob. Jacob connived with his mother to deceive his father, Isaac, in order to steal his older brother’s birthright blessing as first-born (Gen 27:6-30). Jacob later deceived his crafty uncle Laban (Gen 31:30) by secretly fleeing from Laban, who previously deceived Jacob several times (Gen 29:21-27). While fleeing, Rebecca, lied to her uncle Laban about the theft of his household idols (Gen 31:34). Simeon and Levi, two sons of Jacob, deceived and later murdered an entire village to take revenge on a man who raped their sister (Gen 34:13-31). Another of Jacob’s sons, Judah, lies to his daughter-in-law, Tamar, saying that he will give his last son to her in marriage (Gen 38:11, 14, 26). Tamar later deceives Judah, disguised as a prostitute. Ten of Jacob’s sons cruelly lied to him about Joseph’s disappearance. They led their father to believe that a wild animal had killed Joseph, his favorite son (Gen 37:31-35). Joseph also later deceived his brothers when they came to Egypt for food, but for good reasons: to reconcile with his brothers. Joseph actually seemed to break the family generational sin of deception by his extremely honest and unselfish behavior. (See Gen 45:5-10). This is one of the key principles, as we will see later, in changing the spiritual DNA of a region: in order to break the power of that generational sin, the descendants have to walk in the
  32. 32. 33 opposite spirit of the generational sin. Joseph did that for his family. One Christian can do that for their family strongholds if that person is willing to break that pattern of sinful behavior in their own life. The Generational Sin of Lust in David’s Family Spiritual DNA David is of the tribe of Judah, Jacob’s son. Judah was a fornicator (Gen 38:18) yet God brought forth His Messiah, Jesus, from the Tribe of Judah (Gen 49:8-10). What a merciful God we serve! David’s great-great-grandmother, Rahab, was a prostitute (Joshua 2:1, Matt 1:5) David and Bathsheba committed adultery with each other (2 Sam. 11) Later, David’s son Amnon, raped his half-sister, Tamar (2 Sam. 13) Then, Absalom had sex with David’s concubines on the roof of a house (2 Sam. 16:22). Finally, Solomon had a profound lust for women. He had 1000 wives and concubines. He “loved many foreign women” (1 Kings 11:1) who eventually turned his heart from the Lord (1 Kings 11:4). This brought God’s wrath on the nation and eventually split the nation into two parts (1 Kings 11:1-14, 12:24). Solomon’s lust was so strong that he married the foreign women and worshipped their gods—this despite two visions from God (1 Kings 11:9). Generational Guilt Consider these passages: Ps. 79:8: “Do not remember the iniquities of our forefathers against us”? Leviticus 26:39: “So those of you who may be left will rot away because of their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their forefathers they will rot away with them.” These are clear references to generational guilt. If Original Sin is the most profound Biblical example of a negative, spiritual inheritance in the Bible, then the clearest example of generational guilt is seen in the second of the Ten Commandments: I am the Lord your God…you shall have no other gods before me…You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything…for I am a jealous God, punishing the children for the
  33. 33. 34 …for I am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me… (Exodus 20:2-6). sins of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me…(Ex.20:2-6). So, a parent’s sin can negatively affect children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Since this is true, it can be said that all people receive a spiritual inheritance of blessings and curses from our parents and ancestors, as well as their physical characteristics. All people also receive a spiritual inheritance from our corporate spiritual identities—the groups we belong to and from groups our ancestors belonged to: ethnic groups, businesses, religions, tribes, clans, cities, regions, or nations. Here are other Biblical examples: One man’s sin can bring guilt on an entire nation—and on his family. This is a dramatic example of the negative effects of a corporate identity on the entire group. Joshua reminded the Israelites of their bloody defeat in the battle for the city of Ai due to one man’s sin (Joshua 7:1) at Jericho “'Did not Achan the son of Zerah act unfaithfully in the things under the ban, and wrath fall on all the congregation of Israel? And that man did not perish alone in his iniquity.”28 Note that Achan’s entire family was executed by Israel’s leaders because of the father’s sin even though it is unlikely that all the children were even aware of the father’s sin. In contrast: A father’s godly decision brought blessing to his entire family. “David brought the ark into the house of Obed-edom, the Gittite: “And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had” (1Chron. 13:13-14). Likewise, God’s blessings on King David benefited his descendants in many ways, even mitigaing God’s condemnation of David’s son Solomon for his repeated idolatry with many false gods. God was kinder to Solomon because he was a physical son of David!29 The sin of the tribal founder doomed the honor and full blessing of the entire tribe. God-given penalties for the sin of Rueben, Jacob’s first-born son, 28 Joshua 22:20 29 I Kings 11:11-13
  34. 34. 35 affected every generation of that tribe! As first-born, Rueben should have received double-honor above his brothers from his father. Instead, Jacob had to prophesy that Rueben was not to be honored above his brothers because of his sexual sin. “Uncontrolled as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father's bed. Then you defiled it—he went up to my couch” (Gen 49:4). While Rueben was still included among the twelve tribes of Israel, eminent Bible commentator Albert Barnes notes: “ …this blessing is abated and modified by his past conduct. His tribe has its seat on the east of the Jordan, and never comes to any eminence in the commonwealth of Israel.”30 God cursed every male descendant of King Ahab, King of Israel, for the sins of his wife Jezebel,31 who was a witch.32 As a result, God assigned an assassin named Jehu to kill all the males in that family. Jehu kills King Joram, son of Ahab and Jezebel, on the very spot of ground that God predicted where Jezebel had an innocent man named Naboth murdered to satisfy Ahab’s greed.33 Famed Bible commentator Matthew Henry writes: “The very sight of that ground was enough to make Joram tremble and Jehu triumph; for Joram had the guilt of Naboth's blood fighting against him and Jehu had the force of Elijah's curse [sent by God] fighting for him.”34 In similar fashion, all the male descendants of wicked King Jeroboam (even the slaves) were cursed by God and assigned to be killed by God’s command.35 Wicked King Baasha’s household was also condemned to die by God due to the sins of the king.36 The sins of those two fathers brought physical destruction from God on their households. The entire younger generation of Israel was cursed to spend 40 years in the desert due to the sins of their parents. 35. 35. 36 unfaithfulness, until your corpses lie in the wilderness.”37 This is a generational curse. Caleb’s obedience, however, during that same time resulted in his children receiving a great inheritance from God.38 This is a generational blessing. Nehemiah called on God, “confessing the sins of the sons of Israel which we have sinned against You; I and my father's house have sinned” (Nehemiah 1:6). He also wrote, “Our fathers sinned, and are no more. It is we who have borne their iniquities.” (Lamentations 5:7,16). The Jews were quite aware that God destroyed Jerusalem because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors! That is why they deeply repented of both their sins and the sins of their ancestors as they were rededicating the rebuilt city in Nehemiah 9 & 10. See Chapter 17 in this book for more details. Righteous King Josiah admitted that “great is the wrath of the LORD that burns against us, because our fathers have not listened to the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us."39 2 Kings 23 details the special temple service of repentance and the practical deeds of repentance that King Josiah did to cement his commitment to leading Judah in obedience to God’s word. Even godly King David’s sins brought severe consequences on his descendants due to his adultery with Bathsheba and conspiracy to murder her husband, Uriah—one of David’s personal bodyguards.40 Daniel recognized the need to confess and repent for the current and historic corporate sins of Israel in order to appease God’s wrath on Israel: "O Lord, in accordance with all Your righteous acts, let now Your anger and Your wrath turn away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; for because of our sins and the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people have become a reproach to all those around us” (Daniel 9:16). What Daniel and Nehemiah have modeled for us in the above passages is now called “identificational repentance” by many Christian leaders like Peter Wagner, Cindy Jacobs, John Dawson, Jim Goll, Dutch Sheets and others. Each of these leaders would say that repenting for the current and past sins of groups is crucial for the glory of God to beak out over regions and over nations. This is essentially what II Chronicles 7:14 is asking the Church to do. 37 Numbers 14:33 38 Numbers 14:24 39 2 Kings 22:13 40 II Samuel 12: 10-12
  36. 36. 37 Chapter 16 contains a detailed theological discussion of this key biblical practice. A king’s sins bring God’s judgment on Israel generations later (II Kings 24: 1-4): God sends the enemies of Israel against them under King Jehoiakim partly for the sins of a pervious king—four kings earlier! Dr. Gary Greig, Old Testament professor and an expert on this topic, writes: Spiritual oppression [that I call curses] may result from generational sin, as is taught explicitly in such passages as Hosea 4:12-13 and implicitly in the context of Exodus 20:5 and Deuteronomy 5:9. Both the latter passages comprise the second of the Ten Commandments and set the generational sin cycling principle of God's character in the framework of the sin of idolatry. 41 Contrast that penalty on the nation for sin, to the blessing on the nation of Judah under a wicked king named Jehoram because of the righteousness of a previous king named David! In 2 Kings 8: 18-19, Jehoram …did evil in the sight of the LORD. However, the LORD was not willing to destroy Judah, for the sake of David His servant, since He had promised him to give a lamp to him through his sons always. God withheld His judgment on each person in the nation of Judah due to each person’s connection to one of its past government leaders, King David! Clearly, God blesses and judges us as individuals and corporately partly on the basis of those with whom we are connected. In the New Testament, even the Apostles believed in the concept of children being punished for the sins of their parents: “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” (John 9:2). In his response, Jesus did not deny the principle of guilt’s effect passing down the generations. After all, it was part of the 10 Commandments! He just said that the principle did not apply in this situation. A Profoundly Clear Example In II 2 Samuel 21:1-14, King Saul’s past sin brings famine on all Israel under a new king. This vivid example of generational sin also shows how a righteous king broke God’s curse on the nation for the past sin of King Saul. 41 Gary Greig, “Class Notes on Identificational Repentance” (Regent University, Virginia Beach, VA.: 1996).
  37. 37. 38 This we will do to them, even let them live, so that wrath will not be upon us for the oath which we swore to them (Joshua 9:20). There was a famine in the days of David for three years. David inquired of the Lord and the LORD answered, “It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.” Saul and his followers had broken a godly covenant that Joshua had made with the tricky pagan Gibeonites hundreds of years earlier (Joshua 9:16). When the deception was discovered, the Jews wanted to kill the Gibeonites, but Joshua wisely replied, “This we will do to them, even let them live, so that wrath will not be upon us for the oath which we swore to them” (Joshua 9:20). When King David understood that God had brought the curse of a famine on the entire nation because of what King Saul had done, he went to the pagan Gibeonites and asked them what he needed to do to make things right between them and Israel. Seven of Saul’s grandchildren had to die to appease the Gibeonites. After that, the Bible says, “…after that God was moved by prayer for the land” (2Samuel 21:14). God’s wrath came upon all of God’s people because a former king broke a treaty with a pagan people! This is comparable to the hundreds of treaties Christian America made and broke with pagan and Christian Native Americans! God’s wrath came upon the descendants of the perpetrators living under another king. Just being Jewish made them liable to that guilt and its penalty from an earlier generation. The famine affected everyone in David’s kingdom even though some of those people may not have even been alive when Saul’s sin was committed. Lessons Learned From These Scriptures: Just as the economy of Israel under King David was severely damaged by the sin of a past generation, nations today may lack some of God’s blessings due to the past sins of that nation! Just as David went to God and fixed the problem that caused God’s curse on the nation, Christians today can seek God to bring changes to the spiritual DNA of groups or regions that will release more of God’s blessings, gifts and callings on that group or region.
  38. 38. 39 Conclusion Two thousand years ago, the Star of Bethlehem was a physical sign in the heavens that God was doing something great on the earth:42 the birth of the Messiah. In our day, I believe the dramatic decoding of human DNA in the 1990s is a physical sign to Christians that we need breakthroughs in our understanding of the spiritual DNA of cities, regions and nations! This is what spiritual DNA is all about—how God shapes the spiritual make-up and destiny of a group based on the character and spiritual make- up of its key ancestors and corporate identities. With this new understanding of corporate spiritual DNA, the Church has the ability to correct the “defective genes” in the spiritual DNA of groups and regions through proper and thorough repentance in word and deed--- much like scientists can change the physical makeup of a man by rearranging his DNA codes. Since the Church in America can correct the flaws in America’s spiritual DNA through obedience to scriptures like II Chronicles 7:14, God could heal the “birth defects” of our nation and the American Church! This could release America and the Church in America to complete its full destiny in the Lord for worldwide evangelism in the coming great revival! What could please God more? 42 A Bible term for the spiritual realm.

  40. 40. 41 Chapter Three Spiritual Mapping A New Way of Seeing Regional, Spiritual DNA Patterns n the early 70’s, I flew F-4 Phantom jets for the Marines as a reconnaissance pilot.43 The long nose of my mach-2 jet had cameras designed to see and record what the enemy was doing--- or what they had been doing. I was trained to make pictorial maps of enemy actions even when human eyes could not see the ground from the air. I could take pictures with my SLR (Side-Looking Radar) camera right through dense fog or in the dark of night. I could even take a picture of the ground on a clear day with infrared film and tell you what the enemy used to be doing there! Basically, infrared film shows how warm or cool things are in relationship to one another. You can buy a roll of 35mm infrared film in a camera store and take pictures of your homes exterior to see where heat is leaking out of your home on a cold day! On that developed film, warm areas will look different than colder areas. Using 100 foot rolls of 16x4” infrared film negatives, my F-4B could photograph the ground where a truck or plane had been parked in the sun. The infrared film would pick up the heat differential between the warm ground and the cooler spot where the shadow of the truck or plane had been hours earlier. The film was so good that you could actually tell what kind of plane had been parked there by the shape of that cooler section on the ground. A pilot could actually tell what had happened in the past by using infrared film in this way. Spiritual Mapping is like the specialized cameras on my F-4: Spiritual Mapping can help us see what is not readily evident to our five senses. Spiritual Mapping can even reveal things that happened in the past! In World War II, my dad and my father-in-law were both engaged with military intelligence gathering. (Yes—this stuff runs in my blood!) I loved to hear them tell the story of how a civilian working for the Navy’s Comint intelligence unit broke the Japanese code just before the battle of Midway in June of 1943.44 Being able to read the secret Japanese battle messages before they knew we had the ability gave us a huge advantage in winning that crucial naval battle early in the war. That one civilian saved the lives of thousands of US service people. A similar person in British intelligence 43 I find it ironic that I am doing spiritual data reconnaissance now in writing this book. I think it is part of my spiritual DNA. 44 http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq81-3.htm (2 May, 2006) I
  41. 41. 42 Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O LORD, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ And the LORD opened the servant's eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings 6:17) broke the code of the dreaded Nazi “Enigma” code machine, also enabling massive Allied victories in the European theater. Deciphering the enemy’s codes has always been a key to victory over a nation’s enemies. Spiritual mapping is just that: a way to unravel the clues left in history that show what was happening in the spiritual world. When we look at history through the lenses of the scriptures, we can better see what God was doing, what sin was doing45 and sometimes what the forces of darkness were doing. This intelligence helps us see things as God sees them so that we can encourage the godly foundations and tear down the ungodly structures in our society today. “Spiritual mapping” is another relatively new but very useful term in Christendom. Spiritual mapping allows you to be a real explorer into the unseen world. If you like solving puzzles or discovering new things, then you will like spiritual mapping. You get to discover the patterns and causes in the spiritual world that can affect thousands of people over many generations for better or worse! When a scientist wants to know a person really well, he can medically map their DNA to find out many things: the entire genetic makeup of a person, what diseases they may be vulnerable to or resistant to, whom they may have descended from, who is descended from them and other physical issues they may face in life. In a word, knowing physical or spiritual DNA patterns provides keys to why people or groups are the way they are and how their problems can be fixed. You may not have realized it, but this is a spiritual mapping book. Putting the spiritual DNA insights together for a region can produce a “spiritual map” of that region, similar to how medical people can produce a physical DNA map of an individual by combining all the DNA information they have about that person. George Otis, Jr. leads The Sentinel Group46 , one of most authoritative spiritual mapping ministries in the world today. In his classic book on spiritual mapping, Informed Intercession, George quotes William Irwin 45 See Romans 7:17-25 where the power of sin in people is discussed. 46 http://www.sentinelgroup.org/ (5 June 2006)
  42. 42. 43 Thompson on the habit of humans to not see reality as it really is. “We are like flies crawling across the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: we cannot see what angels and gods lie beneath the threshold of our perceptions. We do not live in reality; we live in our paradigms, our habituated perceptions, our illusions.”47 As you read his books and watch his amazing video documentaries, you would hear George describe spiritual mapping as the discipline of diagnosing the obstacles to revival in a given community. He teaches that through fervent prayer and diligent research, practitioners are able to measure the landscape of the spiritual dimension and discern moral gateways between it and the material world. His ministry powerfully documents the growing use of spiritual mapping among pastors, evangelists and intercessors for promoting spiritual revival and community transformation. The Sentinel Group’s mission statement reads, “The Sentinel Group is a Christian research and information agency dedicated to helping the Church pray knowledgably for end-time global evangelization and enabling communities to discover the pathway to genuine revival and societal transformation.”48 That mission statement essentially describes why I wrote this book. Although the term “spiritual mapping” is relatively new, numerous passages of Scripture address the reality of invisible cosmic forces and the importance of spiritual warfare, both of which are foundational to this new discipline. (See, for example, I Chronicles 21:1, Job 1, Daniel 10, Acts 13:4-12, Ephesians 6:10-20, I Peter 5:8, Rev 12:12.) There is even precedent in the Bible for the practice of spiritual mapping, or something very like it (cf. Numbers 13, Joshua 18 and Acts 17). Practical Advantages of Spiritual Mapping Well-known Argentinean evangelism strategist Ed Silvoso has said that no knows better than a mayor of a large city that there are no human solutions to the systemic problems of big cities around the world. Mayors know better than anyone that no amount of money, programs, or force is going to stop violent crime, drug abuse, sexual misconduct, family violence, homelessness and poverty in their cities. All mayors can hope to do is somehow minimize and manage those evils. 47 George Otis, Jr. Informed Intercession (Ventura, CA: Renew Books, 1999), 80. 48 http://www.sentinelgroup.org/.
  43. 43. 44 Until now! The Transformations Video Series from the Sentinel Group shows how cities have been changed by the power of the Gospel! These videos show documentary footage with the actual people that God has used to change their city, region and nation so radically. These videos are so encouraging to city officials worldwide that: • A South African mayor personally distributed videos to 100 other mayors; • Some law enforcement officers in America are using the teachings on the videos as a crime reduction strategy. Through spiritual mapping and intensive, citywide prayer by the Christian community in the regions shown in the “Transformations” videos, some of those problems have actually almost vanished from their cities! It is almost unbelievable, but true! If you do nothing else from reading this book, do this: Buy and watch those videos. They can be purchased for a nominal fee from: http://www.transformnations.com “Spiritual Mapping” for an Individual For those of you who are new to this concept of spiritual mapping, I offer this example of how you can create a “spiritual map” of a person. This will help you get a better feel for spiritual mapping on a regional scale. I have counseled dozens of people as a pastor for over 20 years. I “majored” in counseling as a pastor. Out of my own need to find healing from a very difficult childhood and out of a desire to see my parishioners set free from some of the same damaged emotions and demonic interference I had experienced because of my own damaged emotions, I became a serious student of spiritual healing. I once headed a large counseling department at a large Presbyterian Church in Tidewater, where I had the opportunity to see these principles work with all kinds of people “great and small.” I have counseled elders, deacons, pastors, seminary professors, teenagers, children and couples. While counseling them, I quickly learned that in order to help them, I had to know about their personal history. What they did and what was done to them had huge implications for my ability to help them In a real sense, I had to create a “spiritual map” of their life history to better target my prayers and their prayers in the counseling session. I did “prayer- counseling,” which applied the classic Christian practices of deliberate repentance, verbal confession, verbal forgiveness of others, plus clearly renouncing sin and any involvement with the Devil, demons or other sources of evil. The motto over the doorway to the National Archives
  44. 44. 45 building in Washington DC reads, “The past is prologue.” In other words, what happened in the past affects the future. This principle applied to almost every person I counseled. Their past held powerful keys to healing their present. If I knew how someone was treated as a child by their parents; what sins the person normally struggled with; what major traumas they had experienced; what major sins were committed against them and what serious sins their parents and grandparents committed; then I could usually discern how to dismantle some of the lies, spiritual brokenness and bondages in that person’s spiritual DNA. Armed with that “spiritual map”, I could lead them in prayers of confession, repentance and breaking bondages that usually gave them some relief from persistent problems they experienced. Sometimes, the results were immediately dramatic and life-changing. Later, as I worked to bring spiritual healing to Tidewater, I began to see that the Church had to deal with the sins of our past here in order for this region and this nation to move forward in the Lord’s purposes. The same spiritual principles that damage and heal individuals also damage and heal groups and regions. “Righteousness exalts a nation [or a person], but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Spiritual mapping helps us detect the sins that have disgraced and damaged our nation and points us to how we can become a more righteous nation that is better qualified to be blessed by God in the days ahead. Now that you know more about the theology and practical use of spiritual DNA and Spiritual Mapping, we will look at the basic 14 assumptions about this “scan” of Tidewater’s DNA so that you will better understand the conclusions I have reached in the remaining chapters.

  46. 46. 47 Chapter Four Preparing to Scan Scanning & Healing the Spiritual DNA of Tidewater, Virginia t is important to define our geographic boundaries in this book. God and demons pay attention to geography. Sins and blessings affect geographically defined areas of earth. For example, God normally blessed Jerusalem, as a city, but God essentially cursed the entire nation of Egypt and other nations on several occasions due to their sins. Firstly, Tidewater is not a city in Virginia; it is a region in southeast Virginia defined by the tidal action of the Atlantic Ocean in adjacent waters. Aside from its lakes, all the waters of Tidewater have tides, hence the name: Tidewater! Derived from the nautical definition of a tidewater area, the name means that part of the Atlantic coastal plain between the shoreline and the farthest upstream points in rivers affected by oceanic tides.49 This region is framed largely by the confluence of several rivers entering the mouth of the mighty Chesapeake Bay as it connects to the Atlantic Ocean. Captain John Smith drew the map of the lower Chesapeake Bay, as seen above, after his explorations of the huge bay in 1608.50 The Chesapeake Bay as a whole is one of the largest estuaries in the world with about 12,000 miles of 49 “Tidewater,” The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition Copyright © 2003, Columbia University Press. 50 http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm148.html (3 June 2006) I
  47. 47. 48 navigable shoreline—all of it affected by tides51 . The cities of Tidewater--- which comprise only the southern section of the Chesapeake Bay--- have about 6,000 miles of river and bay shorelines affected by the tides of the ocean. Hampton Roads is the modern name for the smaller, multi-city region of southeast Virginia within the lower part of the Tidewater region. Given the name in the colonial era, Hampton Roads identifies the location where the James, Nansemond, and Elizabeth rivers flowed together and merged into the Chesapeake Bay. It was a stretch of deep, relatively-safe- from-storms water where ships “rode” at anchor.52 A roadway provided more shelter from storms than in the open ocean or in the Chesapeake Bay, but less protection than in a harbor. The name Hampton Roads also honors one of the founders of the Virginia Company and a great supporter of the colonization of Virginia, Henry Wriothesley, the third Earl of Southampton.53 “Hampton Roads has come to refer not only to the large harbor and its contiguous communities, but to the entire metropolitan area.”54 Hampton Roads is now defined by the The Federal Office of Management and Budget as a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)iii comprising nine major cities and five counties. The major cities are Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and Isle of Wight. The smaller city of Poquoson is also included. Five counties are included: York, Gloucester, James City, Mathews and Currituck. Currituck is in North Carolina, but was added to the MSA because of the commuting patterns with the other Hampton Roads 51 Chesapeake Bay Gateways Map & Guide (National Park Service, CGBN-004). 52 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road ( 3 June 2006) 53 Charles Grymes, George Mason University and U.S. Department of Interior, http://www.virginiaplaces.org/classschedule/13hamptonroads.html#one. 54 http://thecatholicconnection.com/community.php (3 June 2006) to include the graphic.
  48. 48. 49 cities. As a result, Hampton Roads is now the nation’s 27th largest metropolitan area in America with more than 1.5 million people. For the purposes of this book, we will use the Hampton Roads MSA as the broad definition of our Tidewater region since much of the history examined herein occurred in the area covered by the current MSA. The 14 Assumptions As we all know, doctors attempt to help people by applying medical facts and principles to the specific physical condition of each person. In many cases, patients undergo some sort of diagnostic scan performed by a machine that tells the doctors more precisely what is going on inside that person’s body. In this book, that diagnostic scan will consist of examining some of this region’s history. I use 14 main assumptions to interpret the results of that historical scan. Here is that list, most of which have been drawn from the Bible. 1. The Bible is literally true in all that it claims to teach: “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2Tim. 3:16; 2Pet.1:20-21). God reveals Himself and His thoughts with precision and literal accuracy through the words of the Bible. 2. Faith in Jesus is the only way to salvation and Jesus is God (John 14:6; John 1:1, 14). 3. God is totally sovereign in the affairs of mankind (Isaiah 45:14, 23-24; Rom. 14:11; Phil. 2:10-11; Heb. 6:13). 4. God planned the time and place of America’s founding: “ From one man, He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live” ( Acts 17:26, NIV). 5. Sin affects every dimension of life: People and nations pay penalties physically, emotionally, spiritually, relationally, politically, economically and environmentally due to sin (Genesis, chapters 3, 4, 6; Proverbs 14:34). 6. The guilt and consequences of past and present sin can affect an individual, a group, a region or a nation. The national security, economy and well-being of a nation is greatly determined by its current sins and the sins of past generations connected to that nation.
  49. 49. 50 Tidewater gave birth to America. The first strands of spiritual genetic code that became America began here. Tidewater is the Womb of America. 7. Angels, demons, the Devil and God are real spiritual beings. The influence and existence of demons is easily demonstrated in biblical literature and in the history of Christianity and many other religions. If demons are not real, Jesus is a fraud for dealing with them so often and so openly (Ephesians 6:11-12; Matthew 10:8; Mark 16:17). 8. The spiritual world of God, the devil, angels and demons influence and control the physical world more than the physical world controls the spiritual world. The Bible and the experience of most devote followers of other religions would confirm that statement. For instance, the Bible claims that the devil controls much of the known world. “We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of evil one (I John 5:19). However, God is in ultimate control of everything, The devil is only “God’s devil”. The devil can do only what God allows him to do. In the final analysis, God rules everything for His purposes, for His glory and for His children. 9. There is a constant invisible war going on between the forces of God and the forces of evil for the souls of mankind, as exemplified in these verses with strong battle imagery: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph 6:10-12). America’s founding has been very marked by this intense spiritual war. 10. The DNA of Virginia—especially Tidewater, Virginia-- is the main, foundational DNA of the United States of America for three reasons: primacy of origin, scope of geography and breadth of influence. Tidewater hosted the first permanent British colony that would create the 13 Colonies and, later, the United States of America. God also used other places in America, with different DNA to birth America—such as the Plymouth Colony, established by the Puritans and Pilgrims 13 years later.ii Nevertheless, the first strands of the spiritual genetic code that became America first grew in Tidewater. God birthed America in the Tidewater colony first. Thus, Tidewater may be called the Womb of America.
  50. 50. 51 Secondly, as first-born of all British colonies, the DNA of Tidewater was deeply connected with all of British Virginia and British Virginia initially was the United States in geography! The British planned to settle in just two areas initially—the Chesapeake Bay and in the Plymouth, Massachusetts area. The famous Mayflower Compact of 1620 says that they came “to plant the first Colony in the northern Parts of Virginia.”55 From the beginning of the Virginia Colony, both the Virginia and the Massachusetts regions were called Virginia under the Virginia Company’s charters from the King. To be exact, the first Virginia Charter of 1606 claimed all land from north latitudes 34 to 45 degrees, essentially from Cape Fear, NC to Halifax, Nova Scotia! The Chesapeake Colony was assigned the land and near islands between 34 and 40 degrees and the Massachusetts Colony of Virginia got latitudes 38 to 45. This created an overlap by three degrees of latitude that either colony could claim.
