Getting A New Job For Geniuses...At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™

Because we do executive placement/recruiting we often get calls from friends and others under the impression that because of this service, we can get anyone a job. This is a very understandable, but mistaken, misunderstanding of how recruiting works.

Yes, we can possibly get you a job if you are a design engineer with five to ten years of experience with architectural aluminum, glass, glazing experience.

So, through the years, we compiled the following which is nothing more than
20-something techniques I have used through the years to help me get many of the jobs/clients/contracts/gigs and, because I have been where you are,
We have a genuine heart for people looking for their next opportunity.

This is a freebie and it is my sincere hope you may find something that will help you as you find your next opportunity.

    • Getting A New Job For Geniuses… A List of Ideas and Techniques That Have Helped Us Get Contracts And Others Get Their Next Opportunity …At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™
    • Believe it or not, this could very well prove to be an exciting time for you. Bear with me as I share alittle personal history with you but I believe it is necessary to help you see that what I am about to sharewith you is not just me blowing hot air.Like the old saying goes, ‘The best time to look for a job is while you already have one.’ However, some of us do not have that option. What follows is nothing more than several techniques I have used through the years to help me getmany of the jobs/clients/contracts/gigs and, because I have been where you are, I have a genuine heartfor people looking for their next opportunity. My first real job out of college was with a company I went to work for with the attitude of, ‘Well, I willwork here until I find something I really like.’For the next 13 years I was fortunate to help grow that company to a large, international businessinformation group. It was a great ride and I won’t bore you beyond this, working for that company was, without a doubt, apart from my family and friends, one of the biggest blessings of my life. The company was sold in 2001 and in spite of the new owners declaring over and over that nothingwould change, it took about six months before they told us ‘old timers’ to hit the road.We all thought we would retire and die with this company and, I suddenly found myself looking for anew job.Sound familiar? • What I did next was have my resume professionally updated and started looking for companies to approach soI could find my next opportunity.I first asked myself, ‘What do I know?’ and the quick answer was data.I knew how to research, find, develop, warehouse, massage and sell data. So, I went to the website of the firstdata company that came to mind, poked around until I found a few email addresses and sent them my coverletter and resume.Low and behold, about ten days later I received and email saying they would like to talk to me about hiring meas a consultant to help them with one of the companies they owned that had hit a revenue plateau and neededsome help. While I was looking for something more permanent, I figured I would take what I could get.I thought, ‘Wow, that was easy!’ so I zipped over the my local bookstore (this was back when people boughtactual books) and I purchased a book with a title close to ‘How To Become A Consultant’.I read the book, put together a proposal, they accepted and that is how I started ‘Construction MarketConsultants, Inc. a business development, sales and marketing consultancy for the architectural, engineeringand construction industry.Through the years, we added executive placement and recruiting to our list of services which is the genesis ofthis document. People would say, ‘Hey, Bobby does recruiting so call him of you are looking for somethingnew.’ GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Well, to be honest, our clients are looking for people with very specific skills within their very specificmanufacturing discipline so the odds of us having a job for anyone that calls or emails is slim. However, I can show you some of the ideas/thoughts/ techniques that we have culled together through theyears that, as I mentioned, have proven useful in helping set one apart from their competition on the way totheir next opportunity. Finally, please bear in mind that this started out for people in Atlanta, where I live, so some of these exampleswill be ‘local’ but you should be able to see the example and find something similar in your area. Now that we have the history lesson behind us, let’s move forward…Best of success!PS – As you read this, please don’t misinterpret this as me trying to promote me, I use a lot of ‘Bobby’examples because they are all I have. • Technique #1 – An Updated Resume I did a lot of hiring through the years and before I was ‘shown the door’, the conventional wisdom was: ‘Your resume should never be more than one page or else no one will read it.’ That has changed. Today we live in a world of ‘Keyword Search’ and when it comes to your resume, the more the merrier. As I mentioned earlier, my resume was professionally done as part of my severance package and though it has been a few years since, it is still proven to be an effective format. Lee Hecht Harrison (www.lhh.com) did my resume and I have had a lot of luck and comments from it; again, not so much for the content but for the format. They encourage you to personalize your resume by adding ‘Interests’, ‘additional qualifications’ and ‘associations’ and, because I own my own business, I keep my resume ‘fresh’ on all the job boards as I have been successful in getting contracts by people/companies interested in hiring me. If you want to see a copy of my resume, just ask and I will be happy to forward it to you. Remember, I am not sending it to you because I think it is ‘all that’…but rather for you to see the formatting and follow it if you like. • Technique #2 – Create More Than One Resume If the market continues to be soft…create two or three resumes. I have one for Business Development (Sales & Marketing) one for ‘Operations’ Make sure you post each one on the different job boards: Monster – www.monster.com Career Builder – www.careerbuilder.com Indeed – www.indeed.com Most of us are familiar with Monster and Careerbuilder but not so much with Indeed. Indeed may not yet be the household name the other two are but I have read a couple of reports that it has more traffic than both, combined. “The find-jobs-anywhere site has now reached 100 million unique monthly visitors, including half of all U.S. job search traffic, and delivers more hires, it says, than CareerBuilder, Monster, and career-networking darling LinkedIn combined.” ~ Venturebeat.com Read more at http://goo.gl/zPRHk (This is a ‘Google shortened URL so don’t think I am taking you somewhere strange.) • Technique #3 – Your New Resumes…Keep Them Fresh! For our recruiting and executive placement, we subscribe to Monster to search resumes and we always start looking for resumes that are under a certain age. Keep your resume ‘fresh’ on the job boards. Recruiters that use job boards typically search for new or updated resumes as opposed to one that has been on the boards for a while. So, every two weeks go to your resume on the job boards and update it or change something so it will be ‘fresh’. I have gotten close to half of my company’s contracts from people contacting me because of my resume on Monster, CareerBuilder, etc. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #3 – Keep It Fresh (Continued) Here is my resume profile on Monster and the date it was last modified. Like many people, I use ‘Outlook’ for my email and contacts so I have a ‘Task’ that pops up each month to remind me to update my resumes online. All I do is add a ‘space’ or delete a period ‘save’ it and then go back in and correct what I did, just enough to for the site to see that the resume has been ‘updated’. • Technique #4 – Create A Value Proposition A lot of people don’t have a Value Proposition or have even heard of one. I know I did not until I was sent one my a friend who was looking for a new job. Here is a great piece from www.pongoresume.com on value propositions: How to Find Your Value Proposition Whether you know it or not, you have skills and talents that are marketable. The trick is to advertise them in a way that entices your potential customers (i.e., employers) to buy. Unless youre a sales professional, you probably don’t think of yourself as a salesperson or advertiser. But if you’re a job seeker, you most definitely have a product to sell – and you are it. Consider your resume as the advertisement for what you’re selling. What Is a Value Proposition? Jill Konrath, author of Selling to Big Companies, defines a business’s value proposition as “a clear statement of the tangible results a customer gets from using [its] products or services.” So, your personal value proposition should be a statement of the tangible results a company will get from hiring you, the unique benefits you will bring to an employer that others won’t. This will help you appeal to a wider range of opportunities and is impressive when you hand someone yours, even in/during/after an interview. So very few people have one and it will help set you apart from your competition. If this is a new concept and would like to see a copy of mine, just ask. (Again, not offering this as a way of me saying, “Hey, look at me!” but to save you some steps.) GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #5 – LinkedIn Profile Complete your profile on LinkedIn to 100%. (www.linkedin.com) That means getting a picture on there and making sure people can contact you. Also, if you are looking for a job while you are still employed, you can set certain features for public/private viewing. Also, be proactive in genuinely endorsing people you know and have real experience with for a specific skill set. This will come back to you and help build your own endorsements. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #6 – LinkedIn Groups – Networking For many, the benefits of being active on LinkedIn are not new but just in case…join as many relevant groups as you can and be active! GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #6 – LinkedIn Groups – Networking (Continued) One of the first things to look for is a thread about ‘Introductions’ or create your own. Here is an example of one from my alma mater. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #7 – LinkedIn Groups For Jobs Search LinkedIn for Groups that are a good match for what you have done and what you want to do. Each Group has its own job section. Introduce yourself upon joining and start networking! Make sure you look at both ‘Jobs’ and ‘Job Discussions’. Also, you can refine your search and get pretty specific results. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #8 – LinkedIn Groups For Visibility! Your activity on LinkedIn, especially in the Groups will lead to greater visibility. Here is where you want to be telling others, “Hey…look at me!” Recruiters are all over LinkedIn on a daily basis so make it easy for them to find you. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #9 – Yahoo Groups…Remember Them? Before LinkedIn became what it is, one of the best ways for groups to collaborate online was through ‘Yahoo Groups’. Well, the still are out there and a good way to network. If you are reading this and are in the metro Atlanta area, especially the north side, check out: Parkway Business Network http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/parkwaybusinessnetwork/ If you are elsewhere, follow this path: Go to Yahoo (www.yahoo.com) and then go to ‘More Yahoo Sites’ Once there, you will find ‘Groups’. (Next slide please) GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #9 – Yahoo Groups…Remember Them? (Continued) Type: ‘Your City of Choice’ + ‘Jobs’ + ‘Network’ Some of these will be quite active…. Others, not so much. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #10 – Indeed It goes without saying that once you get your resume where it needs to be, upload it to Monster (www.monster.com) and Career Builder (www.careerbuilder.com) but also Indeed. (www.indeed.com) (More on this later.) For our executive placement contracts we use both Monster and Indeed. As far as looking for opportunities, Indeed allows you to search several job boards at once. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #10 – Indeed (Continued) Indeed has some very nice additional search features as well. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #11 – Craig’s List Yes, you read correctly, Craig’s List. Small private companies that could be ‘the next big thing’ often advertise on there plus recruiters use Craig list as well. Sure, you have to kiss a lot of frogs but you have nothing to lose by looking. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #12 – Local Job Boards Here is another Atlanta flavored technique but if you have ever heard of ‘Google’ you should be able to find something similar in your area. www.metroatlantajobs.com Also, remember if you do apply for something via a job board…do not sit there and wait. Find out who the HR person is and pursue! GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #13 – Churches See if your church or any large church near you has a Jobs Ministry. These are excellent places to network. Example, my family attends Perimeter Church in Johns Creek, GA and they have a great program. Perimeter Church - Business and Financial Ministries https://www.perimeter.org/pages/ministries/career/crossroads/ A quick search on Google for Atlanta shows: St. Mark United Methodist Church http://www.stmarkumc.org/ourpeople/community/jobs/index.html Northminster Presbyterian Church http://www.northminster-atl.org/ministries/job-networking-ministry/ Roswell United Methodist Church http://www.rumc.com/page.aspx?id=79363 Northpoint Community Church http://northpoint.org/jobhelp When searching on Google for your area, I suggest you use the words ‘Career’ and ‘Networking’ instead of ‘Jobs Ministry’ or you will likely find more posting for ministerial jobs. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #14 – Company Direct Check out company’s websites directly for postings they have. A lot of companies will post on their own website before spending money posting on Monster.com. www.reedconstruction.com (My old company) www.gp.com www.sloanvalve.com Again, don’t just fill out their online application, but find out who their HR person is and call! LinkedIn can help with this. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com
    • Technique #15 – You Have Not, Because You Ask Not Ask the people that you know, on LinkedIn, to give you a recommendation. I put all my recommendations into one single .pdf file, to separate myself from my competition. Forget this ‘References available upon request’….send them with your resume! GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com
    • Technique #16 – No Blanks Also, make sure you fill in all the ‘blanks’. You want to make a recruiter’s job as easy as you can as far as helping them find you! This includes indicating that you will relocate even if you probably won’t. Remember, you can use this to possibly negotiate a virtual office opportunity. The same goes for ‘Full-Time’, ‘Part-Time’ and ‘Per Diem’ The key here is if you don’t want to lock yourself out of even the chance to discuss such. This Resume was ‘viewed’ the one above it was not. Don’t make the recruiter work harder than they have to in order to help ‘find’ you. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #17 – Seeks Recruiters Before They Seek You Dont Wait For The Phone To Ring! Start Googling Executive Placement Firms in your region and beyond but especially in your area of expertise. Many have registration sites where you tell them about you and/or have job postings on their site you may not find anywhere else. Examples: www.belloaks.com www.mattesonpartners.com www.kornferry.com GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #18 – Glassdoor Check out www.glassdoor.com A great website that will provide you not only job leads but valuable insight on how employees feel about a company. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #18 – Glassdoor (Continued) Check out www.glassdoor.com Don’t forget to use this site to learn more about the company from an employee perspective. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #19 – Twitter Twitter – Believe it or not, Twitter is a great place to search for jobs as tons of recruiters and companies directly post their job openings on Twitter. If you personally are not on Twitter, get busy! You can search Twitter with: https://twitter.com/search Advanced Search with: https://twitter.com/search-advanced GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #20 – Zintro If you believe you have any unique experience or excel in a particular field, join and create a profile on Zintro. www.zintro.com Zintro is a business network that makes it easy for Clients (expert-seekers) to connect with Experts for consulting engagements (ranging from one half hour phone consults to multi-month on-site engagements). Some of the uses include: - for market research - to get challenging business or technical questions answered - to potentially hire them for consulting projects - to potentially hire them for full-time employment - to potentially buy products or services from them Zintro has almost 40,000 experts across every single industry sector. These experts have opted-in to receive system-matched inquiries from our almost 10,000 clients. Over 1,000 inquiries come in every month. I have a profile there and regularly get opportunities to submit proposals for projects. • Technique #20 – Zintro (Continued) GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #21 – Welcome To Sales If you are you looking for you next job, whether you like it or not, you are now in sales. If you are looking for your next job as a administrative assistant, teacher, butcher, baker, candlestick maker you will find that you will need to brush up on your sales skills because there you have competition. That said, I strongly suggest you visit www.gitomer.com and subscribe to Jeffrey Gitomer’s weekly e- newsletter Jeffrey Gitomer is the author of The New York Times best sellers: The Sales Bible The Little Red Book of Selling The Little Black Book of Connections, and The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude. and is a wealth of knowledge and no, I get nothing out of promoting his site, I don’t do any ‘affiliations’…not that there’s anything wrong with that. GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
    • Technique #22 – Pray Pray! I hope this does not offend you but I am a big believer in that God does not always put us in a room full of doors with just one door open. I believe there are doors open all over the place of varying degrees. I have had to pick a door, ask God to guide, bless and direct my steps and if I have chosen the wrong door, shut it and steer me in the next direction…which He certainly has. I hope some of this is of use to you and if I can help in any way, please let me know. I have a real heart for people looking for their next gig as I have been there. Best of luck and success... “Without the element of uncertainty, the bringing off of even, the greatest business triumph would be dull, routine, and eminently unsatisfying.” ~ J. Paul Getty Oh yea, one more thing…since this is ‘Freebie’, I did not pay a proofreader so feel free to hip me to any mistakes you may find – bobbydarnell@cmconl.com Thanks and best of success…BD GETTING A NEW JOB For Geniuses…At Things Other Than Getting A New Job™ www.cmconl.com ©2013 by Construction Market Consultants, Inc.
