How can virtual reality improve medicine? - Presentation Transcript

    1. How can virtual reality improve medicine? By Zeinab Bailoun At Universal American School for Mr. Daniels Grade 9
    2. Claire was a normal, 14-yr-old girl…
    3. She was a great student…
    4. She loved her family…
    5. She had lots of friends…
    6. She had a happy childhood…
    7. She loved just being herself…
    8. But one Saturday morning, Claire was on her way to the doctor’s office when… I can’t breathe!
    9. She was unconscious for some time…
    10. At the hospital…
    11. Claire woke up to find herself in a hospital room… Mom Hate to break it to you, honey – but you need an operation. What’s – what’s – happening?
    12. Mom… I don’t feel right… What happened? After the operation, Claire woke up to see her mom crying silently. The operation failed. There was a case of miscommunication between the doctors, and it's possible you may not live anymore.
    13. For Claire, it was as if the foundation her life was built on had suddenly begun to crumble down…
    14. We cannot afford to keep making mistakes! Lives are at risk – look at Claire Sinlet for example! Dr. Williams Healthcare Hospital
    15. The conference ended – Dr. Williams had won. Healthcare Hospital would be introducing clinical simulation technology to its facilities by next month.
    16.
    17. Mom, you should thank clinical simulation technology - it saved my life! By using this type of virtual reality, there was no miscommunication, no errors, & medical students didn't have to practice on me - they had complex mannequins to practice on. I am so thankful! Welcome back, hon – we missed you!
    18. How can virtual reality improve medicine?
      • Virtual reality has improved, and can improve, medicine in many different ways. For example, clinical simulation technology has been used to improve the communication of medical teams, as seen in the article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/12/061222092321.htm . Medical errors are estimated to be the 8th leading cause of death in the US, so many hospitals are beginning to use clinical simulation technology which include complex, interactive mannequins that breathe on their own, experience increases & decreases in blood pressure, have variable heartbeats, eyes that dilate and can react to medications & medical procedures. This is all a part of virtual reality.
    19. Virtual reality – improves thousands of lives, every day.
    20. Thank you!
