### Math 3.4

1. 1. Standard: G.4 Teaching Point(s): By the end of the lesson students will be able to create 3 shapes with rotational symmetry, 3 shapes with linear symmetry, 3 shapes with no symmetry.
2. 2. What is a line of symmetry?

Line of Symmetry- A line that divides a figure into two congruent halves that are mirror images of each other.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/shapes/symmetryrev2.shtml

3. 3. We Do

Take a sheet of paper fold it in half.

How many lines of symmetry are in the sheet of paper?

4. 4. What is rotational symmetry?

Rotational Symmetry- a shape that remains unchanged when it is turned less than 360 degrees about a fixed point

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/maths/shapes/symmetryrev3.shtml

5. 5. We Do

Take two sheets of paper, and draw a five point star on each page. (They must both be exactly the same.)

Place a circle in the center of your stars and a dot on the top point of the star.

How many lines of symmetry are in the ?

6. 6. No Symmetry
7. 7. Independent Work

Draw and identify whether the shapes have a line of symmetry, rotational symmetry, or no symmetry. If it has rotational symmetry, how many orders of rotations are there?

8. 8. Exit Ticket

Complete slip on desk.
