  2. 2. Why Teach Social Studies?To equip students with the skills needed for citizenship in our democracy - - ~ The first step on that journey is active participation as citizens in the classroom.<br />

Students who participate in cooperative learning benefit academically while developing skills vital to success in the modern world.1) Better long term retention 2) Communication skills 3) Collaboration skills 4) Technological skills 5) Time management skills 6) Critical thinking skills<br />
  4. 4. Successful cooperative learning:<br />1) Less competitive – students work face-to-face collaboratively<br />2) Motivation – positive peer pressure<br />
  5. 5. Technology applied to cooperative learning can be a powerful tool - - Students learn more when they:<br />Construct “their own mental models to explain concepts” (Scheuerell, p. 197).<br />“Become creators of information and ideas, not simply users of technology” (Scheuerell, p. 197).<br />
