Gelaty Academy of Sciences was established in XII c. by King David the Builder Kutaisi was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Colchis as early as the second millennium BC Kutaisi /Aia was the final destination of the Argonauts and the residence of King Aeëtes Some of the finest examples of Colchis treasures can be found at the Vani Archaeological Museum. Vani was the centre of a political-administrative unit of the kingdom of Colchis.
