It is aLinux-based operatingsystem designed primarily fortouch screen mobile devicessuch as smart phones andtablet computers. Initiallydeveloped by AndroidInc, which Google backedfinancially and laterpurchased in 2005.
  • 3. LICENSING The source code for Android is available under free and open source software licenses. Google publishes most of the code (including network and telephony stacks)under the APACHE license version and the rest, Linux Kernel changes, under the GNU general public license version 2. The open handset alliance develops the changes to the Linux Kernel in public, with source code publicly available at all time the rest of Android is developed in private by google,with source released publicly when a new version is released .Typically Google collaborates with a hardware manufacturer to produce a “FLAGSHIP” device featuring the new version of Android, then makes the source code available after that device has been

HISTORY Android Inc, was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by ANDY RUBIN, RICH MINER, Nick Sears and CHRIS WHITE to develop, in Rubin’s words “smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner’s location and preferences.” Google acquired android on august 17,2005, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Google. Not much was known about android at the time but many assumed that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone with this move. And now android is the latest technology.
  • 5. WHAT IS ANDROID?> Android has a dictionary meaning of being a human thatresembles automation. The true character of its name is it’s theGoogle created software stack for creating comprehensivemobile applications and software to realise the full potential ofones mobile handset and its possibilities. Android is acomprehensive software stack of mobile devices that includesan operating system, middleware and key application. The richsource of software bunch is used in mobile technology throughits innovation model of the Android Software Developmentkit(SDK).

Android is developed in private by Google until thelatest changes and updates are ready to be released, atwhich point the source code is made available publicly.This source code will only run without modification onselect devices, usually the “NEXUS” series of devices.With many devices there are proprietary componentswhich have to be provided by the manufacturer , inorder for android to work. Android has a worldwidesmart phone market share of 75% during the thirdquarter of 2012, with million devices activated in totaland 1.3 million activations per day. The latest majorupdate is android 4.2 (jelly bean). In October2012, there were approximately 700000 apps availablefor android, and estimated number of applicationsdownloaded from Google play, android’s primaryapplication store, was 2 billion.
