    1. Amethyst is a transparent, coarse-grained, purple variety of quartz and has long been the most important quartz variety used in jewelry. Amethyst is the most precious quartz mineral and comes in a few distinct colors. Although it must always be purple to be amethyst, it can and does have a wide range of purple shades including violet, purple, rose, lavender and mauve. The pale colors are sometimes called "Rose de France" and can be seen set in Victorian jewelry. The deep colors are the most valuable, particularly a rich purple with rose flashes. When it comes to value, the most valuable color is that of a deep purple with tinges of violet. There are many gemstones that are similar in consistency to Amethyst, one of them is Citrine. Citrine is discount Amethyst that is heated; it turns yellow orange in color. Cheap Amethyst can occur as long prismatic crystals that have a six sided pyramid at either end or can form as druzes that are crystalline crusts that only show the pointed terminations. China Amethyst can be found all around the world, however the major deposits of Amethyst are found in southern Brazil, Uruguay and Madagascar. Amethyst found in Southern Brazil is usually light violet. Uruguay Amethyst is the most beautiful, but can have blemishes. The Amethyst in Madagascar is usually red in color. Amethyst is also found in parts of Germany and in Russia, located by the Ural Mountains. In Greek mythology, fashion Amethyst was created by the god Dionysius, the god of intoxication. Dionysus was angered one day by an insult from a mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal he encountered. After, creating tigers to carry out his wish, unsuspecting Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana appeared. But Diana turned Amethyst into a stature of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from Dionysus' tigers.
