2009 Marketing Spend Survey Results

We had a total of 204 responses to this online survey.

67% plan to increase their overall marketing spend for 2010.
Only 3% plan to cut back on the marketing spending

41% of respondents plan to spend between $1,001 and $5,000 in 2010
32% don’t plan to spend over $1,000

56% of respondents say that most of their marketing spend for 2010 will be allocated to Social Media marketing
52% on email marketing
46% plan to spend it on collateral marketing (Brochures, presentations)

44% of respondents spent less then $1,000 on marketing in 2009
35% spent between $1,001 - $5,000

Small Business owners have indicated that their total overall Marketing spend will increase by 7% in 2010.

41% of respondents spent most of their marketing money on collateral materials in 2009
38% on email marketing

45% use social media to market their business
36% do not
20% use social media, but not very often

Of those that do use social media, Facebook, their company website, and LinkedIn are the most popular.
Twitter and blogging are a close second

67% of small businesses surveyed do have a website.
16% do not.
17% are working on one.

23% of small businesses surveyed have a blog.
62% do not.
15% are working on one.

40% of small businesses plan to increase their social media marketing spend marginally for 2010.
28% are planning on substantially increasing their social media spend.

According to small business Public Relations ranks the most important marketing tool. (43%)
Social Media marketing (38%) is a close second.
The remainder include: - Online Advertising (31%) - Email Marketing (29%) - Search Engine Marketing (28%) - Offline advertising (26%)

The results show that overall marketing spending for 2010 will increase substantially (26-50%) as compared to 2009. Much of this spending will be in social media, email marketing and search engine marketing.
