The right to make copies becomes important with mass production.
In Canada it's the life of the author + 50 years
- You need permission to make copies. - Fair Dealing - ok for personal use and research.
- copying and pasting text - getting photos from the web - copying and sharing music - copying and sharing films - Napster and Bittorrent file sharing
- in the US the large entertainment companies cracked down - the American copyright laws changed - many people were sued
What if you wanted to share?
- What would you like to share? - Would you like to share?
- a way to share and use things legally - without giving up copyright - you're giving permission - saying \"yes\" in advance
You need to follow certain rules.
- always need attribution - you have to give credit - can choose from any of the other conditions to create a license
- finding photos on Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ - can search for photos with specific licenses - go and search - if it's no derivative works, you shouldn't use it in a slideshow, but you can use any of the other licenses - if it is share-alike you need to share your presentation in the same way with the same license
- 2002: the first licenses came out - 2003: 1 million works - 2004: 5 million works - 2005: 20 million works - 2006: 50 million works - 2007: 90 million works - 2008: 130 million works
