With 43 states currently in various stages of implementing the Common
Core State Standards (CCSS), there is a need to identify books that align with
and support the Common Core.
For publishers, the challenges include:
• the controversies around the Common Core and its implementation
• the lack of a definitive way to choose books that are Common Core
exemplars—the fact that it’s a judgment call that requires deep
knowledge of the Common Core standards; educational experience; and
a thorough review of potential candidates
• the lack of a specific field within ONIX for communicating Common Core
information
Common Core Presentation by Josh Weiss,
VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, HarperCollins Children’s Books
One path for dealing with this evolving situation is:
• Develop a process for identifying your Common Core-aligned titles,
frontlist and backlist.
• Create resources that support educational use of these titles and make
the resources available on a website and in teachers’ guides and so on.
• Add a field to your product database to track Common Core-aligned
titles.
• Make sure your editorial team understands the sorts of features that can
help make a title Common Core-aligned so that, with the right books,
they don’t miss opportunities to include appropriate elements.

VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, HarperCollins Children’s Books
Additional suggestions include adding and maintaining fields in your product
database for:
• Common Core dot notations
• Reading levels (especially Lexile and Fountas & Pinnell)
• Interest levels
• Age levels
• Grade levels

Each season at Harper Children’s about 10% of the list is identified as
Common Core-aligned. In addition, about 200 backlist titles have been
identified—this includes our Appendix B official exemplar titles as well as
other key backlist titles.
This is a collaborative process led by library marketing but also involving
outside educational consultants as well as sales, editorial, and management.
Each of the selected titles is marked as Common Core-aligned in our product
database.

Library marketing works with experienced, knowledgeable outside resources
to create teachers’ guides and the like. Many of these guides get printed and
distributed at conferences, teachers’ nights, and other educational
gatherings.
A website, www.readcommoncore.com, includes the Common Core-aligned
titles and downloadable resources.

Given the lack of a specific field in ONIX to convey Common Core
information, many publishers are using the Main Description field.
Currently at Harper Children’s, for the 10% of the list identified as Common
Core-aligned, we include a basic phrase indicating Common Corer alignment
at the end of the Main Description field that feeds out to retailers and other
recipients via ONIX. We are now using the phrase “correlates to the
Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts,” as recommended
by BISG.
We also strive to spell out in the description the aspects of the book that
make it a strong Common Core book—or simply a good book for classroom
use.
Common Core Presentation by Josh Weiss,
VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, HarperCollins Children’s Books
Other publishers might choose to use the Main Description field to go into
greater depth about the Common Core attributes of a book.
Another option is to create and maintain a second description field aimed
more specifically at the school and library market.
A challenge with that is establishing and managing which partners get which
description—and of course creating multiple descriptions. Harper is not at
this time maintaining this sort of second description.
Common Core Presentation by Josh Weiss,
VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, HarperCollins Children’s Books
For our titles that we identify as Common Core-aligned, Harper is gathering
appropriate dot notations.
Common Core dot notations are “unique identifiers [that] are needed for
humans and technology to refer to individual standards in a consistent
manner.” For example, the English Language Standards for Reading:
Literature for Grade 1, which calls for the learning goal “ask and answer
questions about key details in a text,” is expressed as the dot notation
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.1.
Some publishers might choose to include dot notations within a description
field. But as a trade publisher with a broad retail audience to try to reach,
Harper is choosing not to.
Common Core Presentation by Josh Weiss,
VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, Harper Collins Children’s Books
Ideally dot notations will be developed as an ONIX standard field. There’s a
controlled list of dot notations that could be easily loaded in product
databases as a picklist and used within the Subject composite of ONIX (like
BISACs). BISG’s Educational Standards Taxonomy Working Group is working
on this issue.
Note that it’s important to follow BISG’s recommendation to use the full dot
notation (e.g., CCSS.ELA-Literacy.R1.K.1), not the shortened version (R1.K.1).
For now, Harper Children’s is not feeding out dot notations. They are listed in
support materials such as teaching guides, and they are shown on our
website www.readcommoncore.com.

VP Managing Editorial/Digital Publishing Services, Harper Collins Children’s Books
The Keywords field is another potential location for conveying Common Core
attributes. Potential keywords include dot notations and/or CCSS themes or
learning goals.
Given the free form nature of keywords, though, BISG’s Common Core
Working Group has recommended the creation of a taxonomy to capture the
instructional intent of a book. Sample terms include: first person, conflicting
viewpoints, figurative language, and cultural perspective.
The taxonomy would likely be maintained by BISG and used within the
Subject composite of ONIX (like BISACs). For now, publishers might choose to
start gathering this information.
Unlike dot notations, for which the vocabulary has been set, work is needed
to agree on an appropriate set of terms in an instructional intent field.
