  • 1. Shock Therapy
  • 2. Shock Therapy
    • I am shocked at the state of world affairs today! Its not just this issue or that, its the dangerous impact of all these issues combined. Like 9/11 happening on George W. Bush’s watch.
    • How did we get into such a dire condition?
    • How can we ever climb our way out of this quagmire?
  • 3. Population
    • In the time it takes to do this speech 1,200 human babies will be born
    • And 85 children will die from starvation.
  • 4. Extinction
    • In the time it takes to do this speech 28 acres of natural habitat will be destroyed to make way for human population growth.
    • It seems to be okay for us to lose three species of plants or animals every hour. That’s fair because we seem to be okay with making ourselves extinct.
  • 5. Global climate change
    • There is unanimous scientific agreement that we are heating our planet to dangerous levels.
    • There is general agreement around the world that no nation or company will make the first move to cut industrial emissions. It’s depressing! We need shock therapy!
  • 6. Lifestyles
    • Avarice
    • Gluttony
    • Lust
    • Gambling
    • Pornography
    • Drugs and alcohol
  • 7. Mental health
    • One in four Canadians will be treated for depression sometime in his or her life. What happened to the great promise of education, technology, and the comforts of modern living? We’re better informed and it makes us depressed! A shocking quandary!
  • 8. Drug abuse
    • One person in 100 is in prison in the U.S., a majority of them in for crimes related to drugs and prostitution. More people in America’s prisons than anywhere else in the world, more people on death row, and people still take drugs like there’s no tomorrow. We should be shocked!
  • 9. Pornography
    • We wonder why one marriage in three ends in divorce but every year people spend billions of dollars on pornography. Nobody admits to using it, nobody speaks out against it, and a few hundred people make a hoard of money exploiting our sexuality.
  • 10. Gambling
    • Canadians complain about not being able to get ahead and yet they spend $5 billion on lotteries and gambling each year. Its not rational, people. Are gambling with the one life each of is given?
  • 11. Obesity
    • One person in three is over-weight or obese. Meanwhile we are disgusted with the media and pop culture for promoting obscene thinness. There is a growing gap between realities.
  • 12. Childhood’s end
    • Your children spend as much time watching TV and playing video games as they do in the classroom. You tell your children its too risky for them to play outside, but the biggest risk is within the home.
    • Half of women and one third of men report being sexually abused as children.
    • Under-aged American youths spent $50 billion on illegal booze. What is going on?
  • 13. Conflict
    • Scarce resources
    • Unlimited desire for growth and new wealth
    • ‘ Tribal’ factions
    • Readiness to do battle
  • 14. Violence
    • Its called murder if you kill a person you know, but if you go to war and kill a stranger they call you a patriot. Where does this cycle of insanity stop?
  • 15. Headhunters and cannibals
    • Human headhunting was abolished in Borneo just after World War II.
    • In many parts of the world people still eat our cousins – other monkeys!
  • 16. War
    • The most advanced nation in the world spends as much money on military as all the other nations combined. $18 million per hour. And they can’t finish the job they started in one small country.
    • If they spent that kind of money promoting industry and jobs in other countries, maybe young men wouldn’t be so angry.
  • 17. Famine
    • A small fraction of the military budgets would wipe out death due to starvation in this world in a single generation.
    • Now there is a shortage of wheat and corn because rich countries are turning to biofuels for their SUVs.
    • You don’t get to eat, but I get to drive my car. Someone should be shocked!
  • 18. Pestilence
    • Sanitation and antibiotics have saved millions of lives. Now because of unsafe practices our hospitals are one of the most dangerous places a person can go.
    • Thousands of routine deaths due to infections picked up in hospitals are not reported.
    • Careless use of antibiotics places us all at risk of an all-out unstoppable pandemic.
  • 19. Human rights
    • When my mother was eight years old women became legal ‘persons’ in Canada. When I was ten Canadian Indians became Citizens and American Blacks got the vote. Since then women got the right to own real estate out-right without a man’s permission.
    • South Africa acknowledged Black Africans’ right to rule, and consenting adults in Canada could legally have sex in their own bedrooms.
    • What took us so long to figure all this out? What were we thinking? Still - women are second class citizens in most parts of the world today. It is sickening!
  • 20. Democracy
    • We want to export our democracy around the world. How much money does it take to run an American style election campaign? And only forty percent turn out in the Alberta election!
    • Hello! Election turn-outs are dropping across the developed world. Let’s not deceive ourselves! Let’s get democracy right here at home!
  • 21. Rich and poor
    • 1.2 billion people living on less than US$1 a day. At the same time, 940 billionaires have a combined net worth of almost $3 Trillion. Go figure!
    • This titanic imbalance just can’t be good for us!
  • 22. Slavery
    • Its not enough that poor people are starving to death. Today 27 million slaves, many of them sex slaves, are kept alive to suffer lives of repeated rape, torment and confinement.
    • That is more than the adult population of Canada! Who knew? We don’t hear their silent screams.
    • Anyway, what took Christianity almost 2000 years to decide that slavery wasn’t a good thing? Islam is still working on it.
  • 23. Religion
    • Its a cold dark world without a god. It’s also a cold dark world with a god. I have no quarrel with god. Religion is man’s creation. It serves man’s interests.
    • Crimes of the church against children, Native people, thinkers, women, the mentally ill, ethnic minorities, the slaughter of human life in the name of your god because those other people don’t believe in the same god or worship in the same way. Shut down your brain and lead with pure faith. Of course it’s always the other guy that’s evil!
  • 24. Science
    • Today we have more scientists, more engineers, more doctors, social workers, and teachers alive than in the past 800 lifetimes put together. We can send robots to Mars and beyond. We observe distant galaxies and create nano-particles.
    • But science can’t get people to respect each other and tolerate their differences. Dispassionate science thrived in Nazi Germany.
  • 25. Ethics
    • We like things simple. Black and white, right and wrong. I am right while you are wrong. Simple.
    • In reality there is a slippery grey slope between good and evil that we fail to appreciate because it takes too much work to think about it.
    • Its easier to let the strong prevail, and since I am a stronger than you, lets fight! History will show you to be the evil one.
  • 26. Anthropocentrism
    • Our delusion of godliness is made possible only by a couple of facts - that we can only process a bit of our knowledge at a time and that we see the world revolving around us at top predators.
    • Our status as gods may take a tumble when we have proof of extraterrestrial aliens.
  • 27. Animal rights
    • You wouldn’t eat your pet would you? But its okay to eat an animal that you don’t know. And it helps if you hire a hit man so you don’t have to face the ugly deed yourself. You’d be shocked to see what goes on in the slaughter house! The cows are.
    • We did not evolve from apes. We are apes. Naked apes. Human DNA and chimp DNA differ by no more than 1.2 percent. Genetically we’re roughly 90 % same as dogs, chickens and frogs. Who are we kidding?
    • Animals have intelligence, personalities, and emotions. We are not that special. If we could really understand other animals, we’d be shocked!
  • 28. Genocide
    • 100 million people died in the 20th century as a result of a half dozen ruthless maniacal dictators. Who let that happen?
    • Is this story over? I don’t think so, history repeats – Alexander the Great, Attila the Hun, Khan, Napoleon... where does the human stupidity stop?
  • 29. Annihilation
    • Several human-like species walked the earth over a million years ago and disappeared – homo habilis, homo erectus, the Neanderthals....
    • Our own destiny is not yet written.
  • 30. Dark Age
    • We can lose our modern culture and revert to a long period of stagnation and wide-spread repression. We can lose it all!
  • 31. Moral responsibility
    • Our burden is a huge moral responsibility. We must act so as to re-invent and redefine our humanity and ourselves.
    • We can’t just pick off one issue thread at a time. These issues are tightly interwoven.
  • 32. Intelligent life
    • Forget intelligent life on other planets . We need to work on it here. What does it take to shock humanity to its senses? Stop the stupidity, people. We have a choice
    • Stop it! Stop it now!
    • We stand on the precipice of annihilation
    • Stop the stupidity!
  • 33. Good deeds
    • There are good organizations out there doing good things.
    • They need your help. Amnesty International, World Vision, Green Peace, Oxfam and many more.
    • Stop and think.
  • 34. Visionary Leadership
    • We can stand in the shoes of our forefathers – Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa
    • Stop the stupidity!
  • 35. Visionary giants
    • We can stand on the shoulders of visionary giants who pointed the way forward
    • Stop the stupidity!
    • We can pave the road less traveled and set our destiny together
  • 36. Stop! Think! and Act!
    • Stop the stupidity! Stop it! Stop it now! And start to think with your heart. Start to take action now!
  • 37. WHAT WE NEED…
    • On a planet with limited resources and no end of human imagination or appetite it is inevitable that there will be competition and conflict.
    • What is negotiable is how we deal with that conflict.
    • We need to develop conflict management strategies that become deeply embedded in our culture and everyday life.
